Utter idiots

Some inexperienced climbers had to be rescued from Ben Nevis today, some of them were attempting to climb one of Britain’s Highest mountains in fucking trainers!!!

What possesses these absolute idiots to see extreme snow and gales and think ‘ooh I’m going to climb a mountain?’ The helicopter couldn’t get to them so it was rescuers on foot who had to assist.

I know the son of a mountain rescue volunteer who had to carry a dead 6 year old child for several miles. His parents thought mountains would be fun in flip flops.

YANBU.

puds11 · 10/02/2020 21:42

That is beyond stupid.

The child is beyond sad Sad

Likethebattle · 10/02/2020 21:47

I’m not sure how he actually passed but his parents climbed some hills and got lost as the weather closed in, you are also meant to let someone know your route, now if these tubes rocked up in trainers in a storm they would be sent packing. Therefore they did not alert anyone to their expected route and time and obviously had zero clue of what they were doing. Yes the mountains are beautiful in the snow but also fucking deadly!

Yanbu about the rescue from Ben Nevis.

Yabu to give a 'friend of friend' type story about a child who died, especially considering the amount of bereaved parents who come on here for support.

Loveislandlydia · 10/02/2020 21:50

YANBU

Stressedout10 · 10/02/2020 21:53

These sorts of morons give me the rageAngry

Likethebattle · 10/02/2020 21:58

I really think if a helicopter has to go out, at great cost, the first item winched down should be a debit card reader!

Barnowl25 · 10/02/2020 22:02

A life boat also had to go out during this storm for some muppet who thought it would be a good idea to go surfing. They should fined.

Likethebattle · 10/02/2020 22:06

They also put the rescuers at risk. I think they should let ‘natural selection’ happen with these tubes.

sqirrelfriends · 10/02/2020 22:12

That poor 6 year old.

FelicityBeedle · 10/02/2020 22:15

Idiotic to go up Ben Nevis in these sort of conditions, especially in trainers. I do have an issue with people bitching about climbing fells and hills in trainers in more clement weather, with healthy ankles it’s perfectly doable, how the fuck do these people think fell runners do it

Likethebattle · 10/02/2020 22:22

@FelicityBeedle I think for proper climbing you need the correct footwear. The weather can change really quickly when climbing in Scotland. Warm and dry and then it closes in and it’s wet with almost zero visibility. Trainers are not suited to that kind of environment.

Two ridiculous stories of complete cockwombles in the news; this one and the surfer in Hastings.
So many dedicated service providers on foot, helicopter, rnli boats, coastguards, police and mountain rescue. So many service people with children,, wives, husbands, families.
Caira did not just sneak up in an hour and surprise us. We have known about it for ages. It's progress has been monitored and reported and still people thinking of the thrill put other's lives at risk because of their selfish delusions of immortality. They should be invoiced.

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 10/02/2020 22:24

Some people with a toddler got rescued off mount Snowdon one year, child was on the verge of hypothermia. Parent was a Dr so not lacking intelligence but clearly no common sense.
Ben Nevis in trainers is another level, as was the surfer putting the lifeboat crew at risk. Idiots.

billsmothers · 10/02/2020 22:26

His parents thought mountains would be fun in flip flops.

That's not unusual, you see so many idiots people on Snowdon in flip flops like they are going for a gentle Sunday stroll, not people on the train either - people setting off on/returning from the climb.

Tighnabruaich · 10/02/2020 22:54

The idiots on Ben Nevis had no maps, no proper gear, no ice axes, nothing, and it was blizzard conditions.

Likethebattle · 10/02/2020 22:58

@tighnabruaich what on Earth comes into their minds!

“ I really think if a helicopter has to go out, at great cost, the first item winched down should be a debit card reader!”

Now that’s a plan.

Poor child.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/02/2020 23:08

People just don't think.

We did part of Hadrian's Wall a few years ago, and it was tough going (Steel Crag), even in full walking kit. A few miles further down we were met with a coach party heading back the way we'd come, in flip flops and slip on shoes - I gave it about a hundred yards before the first broken ankle.

It's almost as though some people have never been out of doors before.

Tighnabruaich · 11/02/2020 16:59

Likethebattle I honestly can't imagine. Perhaps they are from the city and have no experience of the great outdoors, and don't realise what conditions are like - on the highest mountain in the UK, in a blizzard, during a storm ... it's hardly a stroll in the park even in the best conditions!

wherehavealltheflowersgone · 11/02/2020 17:11

YANBU saying that the trainers - wearers are idiots.

YABVVVU to use a child's death as an anecdote in your argument. Especially "friend of a friend" style anecdote. Poor taste OP.

Dieu · 11/02/2020 17:16

Fucking eejits. I would rescue them, but then organise a public flogging!

Iwantacookie · 11/02/2020 17:22

I do think there should be more laws around hiking up mountains.

Surely you can just pop a flag up red for keep off, green for fine off you go.
I'm wondering if some people just dont understand what it can be like.

BossAssBitch · 11/02/2020 17:25

@FelicityBeedle

They wear fell shoes. Honestly, trainers are not suitable for climbing mountains in any weather.
