I live in East Sussex. Yesterday our local lifeboat launched in the middle of the worst storm in years for a feckin idiot surfer who chose to throw himself into the sea in search of a thrill.
You have probably seen the footage of the lifeboat being thrown on it's side at launch.
Or should there be a feckin idiot surcharge?

At least the surfer looks like he was wearing appropriate winter kit for his chosen activity... (Not condoning his choices but saying those 'climbers' seem to have been even more idiotic!)

The other problem with charging people a fine for being idiotic is that he was not the only surfer out yesterday. As pp have said there were others elsewhere on the coast and I know windsurfers were out on inland venues. Now arguably they were all as equally idiotic (and behaving in keeping with the attidues common in the extreme end of those sports towards severe weather) but were lucky enough not to need emergency services call out.

This is a good point.

You can be stupid and lucky. It probably just means you are more likely to risk your luck again - because I bet that surfer won't be such an idiot again.
