Sick of my house smelling of weed.

Terraced house. The neighbours next door have had their now 20 something grandson living there for the last 7 years who smokes skunk, daily.
He smokes it in his attic bedroom and the smell of it seeps through the walls into our house. Sometimes it just smells upstairs, sometimes it’s the whole house.
When my children were born, I spoke to him about it and ever since then I send him a text to ask him to open his window a bit wider when I start to smell it.
He’s been pretty good about it but I’m just starting to get sick of my house stinking of weed all the pissing time.
My eldest had a friend over yesterday. Parents were coming to collect friend and the place bloody stunk. Had to open the windows to air downstairs out before they arrived.
What can I do? It doesn’t look like he’s moving out anytime soon? And I can’t sell up and move.
Help

Call the police. Or tell him you’re sick of it and if he doesn’t stop you will call the police.

Fairylea · 09/02/2020 16:53

I would call the police. No way would I put up with that.

Forrandomposts · 09/02/2020 16:56

You can't call the police. It's just not a proper crime to smoke it alone in your home. OP I sympathise as I have the same issue with the guys who live below me, and I hate the smell.

Have you tried talking to his Grandparents?

doubleshotespresso · 09/02/2020 16:57

We moved into a new property in the summer and drove ourselves nuts trying to identify quite where the stench of weed was coming from almost daily. Turns out our adjacent neighbours smoke it in the bath and in their kitchen and it travels through pipe work and floorboards into our house. So disgusting it makes me want to vomit. I've bought literally every air freshener device on the planet - but orange peel oddly seems to help a bit get rid of it x

Shoppingwithmother · 09/02/2020 16:59

You absolutely can call the police. It is illegal still. This happened to me. I did call the police and they sorted it out straight away.

BritWifeinUSA · 09/02/2020 17:01

It needs to be legal there like it is here. Then people will smoke it in the open air. At least the breeze will carry it away then. And making something legal tends to make it suddenly “less cool” and its popularity drops. I hardly ever smell it here. But there are other ways to get the same high without the stench.

ShyTown · 09/02/2020 17:11

This is why it should be legal. Where I live it is and most people I know that smoke it have vape pens without a distinguishable smell. No disgusting skunk either. That said, in your situation I’d call the police- they may not be interested but it’s worth a shot.

Dinomum2 · 09/02/2020 17:19

I have almost the exact same problem except my neighbours are a house share and they all smoke it! Its so strong inside our house. We are saving up to move because of it. The best thing I have found is the neutradol gel power orb. Put one in every room and change them every 6 weeks.

MeridianB · 09/02/2020 17:23

From the nasty clouds of it I smell in parks and streets, I really don’t think legalising it so everyone can smoke outside is an answer.

Definitely worth speaking to the grandparents (who presumably either like it or have no sense of smell). My council’s noise team also deals with smell issues so worth checking where you are.

Trafalger · 09/02/2020 17:24

I have the same problem with our downstairs neighbours. I have complained to their landlord, letting agents, the managing agents of the flat and the police. Fuck all has been done. The police tried for while but she got wise and just stopped answering the door to them. I hate it. Our bathroom and daughters room stinks so much we have had to move bedrooms for her and also have the window permanently open in the bathroom (yes even in this weather!)

We are looking to move but can't afford it yet as we have a fixed term mortgage until next year which has a hefty redemption penalty.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 09/02/2020 17:26

Try the environmental health department if the police are no use.

UYScuti · 09/02/2020 17:27

strong smells from neighbours can be a problem, there are a lot of cooking smells in my block of flats, I dont really see that much can be done though:(

Bubbleandboil · 09/02/2020 17:47

I don’t want to call the police. It’s a bit OTT to do that I’m my opinion.
I suppose I could speak to his grandparents (they’re all lovely people) I’ve just always tried to keep it between us as he’s an adult.
I wonder if I should just outright ask him to only smoke it outside and If that fails then go to his grandparents?
Britwife I’m not opposed to cannabis at all but the thought of legalising skunk horrifies me. Almost all the smokers young and old in my town smoke it and it would be a permanent stench in the air.

namechange1041 · 09/02/2020 17:48

Tell him to stick his head out of the window when he's smoking it. Or go outside?
I know it's not ideal, he shouldn't be doing it, but I doubt you'll be able to stop him from smoking it altogether.
The least he can do is compromise.

mencken · 09/02/2020 17:49

having had a dealer in my rental (and all users are dealers) there's very little the police can do, unfortunately. And the dealers are aware which is why they do it in houses.

are the non-stupefied adults also living there? Are they open to complaint about the druggie?

gypsywater · 09/02/2020 17:51

All users are dealers Grin wtaf Confused

bigreputation · 09/02/2020 18:06

@mencken all users are not dealers, that's ridiculous.

OP, I think you've been really patient but if the smell is still getting through then I think asking him to smoke outside is fine. If he doesn't, I'd go to the grandparents.

UYScuti · 09/02/2020 18:33

I’m not opposed to cannabis at all but the thought of legalising skunk horrifies me
skunk?
This isn't the 1980's, things have moved on, most legal and grey/black market cannabis would have similar THC levels to what was referred to as skunk back then, I think the smell problem is worse with the more potent smelling varieties such as 'blue cheese' etc

mencken · 10/02/2020 12:27

fine. Support gang violence, knife crime, cuckooing and county lines, all for your saddo smokes. And don't come blubbering back when you or a loved one is a crime victim because you are a no-life saddo smokers.

if only the stuff was more toxic.

Yestermost · 10/02/2020 12:31

"All users are dealers". It sounds like a Forever Living style scam. Grin

AFistfulofDolores1 · 10/02/2020 13:06

Ask his grandparents to buy him a vape-machine.

UYScuti · 10/02/2020 13:09

Mencken you've clearly had a very bad experience and I understand why you are bitter and angry💐

UYScuti · 10/02/2020 13:20

Of course I understand that mind altering substances can be problematic however prohibition is a blunt instrument, a primitive response to a complex issue, in the main it causes more problems than it solves.

TheUser420 · 10/02/2020 13:32

It's just not a proper crime to smoke it alone in your home.

Possession of a class B substance. 5 years in choky possible.

Just make sure no one is saying anything rude on Twitter first though - the police may be busy.
