To not understand why this storm is being blamed on climate change

If it was the worst on record, I’d get it.

But this country has suffered some appalling storms in the past

The snow storm of ‘47 when 10ft drifts developed
The ‘53 storm that claimed almost 400 lives
Feb ‘63 - 1 coldest ever recorded of -21
‘76 worst drought ever

Looking worldwide - the worst storm ever recorded was in.... 1900 (Galveston)

Had any of these events occurred today - climate change would be listed by many as their cause. However at the time - there wasn’t a whisper of it.

If storm records were being beaten, I’d “get it.
But there not. And I suppose that’s why I’m struggling to link climate change with storms.

Can anyone enlighten me? Genuine question

Didn,t know it was.

Bringringbring · 09/02/2020 16:41

Oh it’s everywhere - just listening earlier on radio, weekend papers etc

You can’t pin any one storm on climate change - as you say, extreme storms have always happened. But one of the effects of climate change - one we are seeing all over the world already - is that extreme and unseasonal weather, including storms and flooding, will become much more common. So although this may have happened anyway, we will have to get used to this happening much more frequently as the planet warms.

Herbalteahippie · 09/02/2020 16:44

Because the storms and other extreme weather are more frequent than previously- catalysed by climate change, it has a role in the storm but is not the direct cause.

MingeofDeath · 09/02/2020 16:49

I studied Environmental sciences at uni over 20 years ago and part of that course involved climatology. I always remember being told then, that as the atmosphere warms up there would be more frequent stronger storms and extreme rainfall events. My lecturer was correct.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 09/02/2020 17:01

It's caused by wind farms.

HaudMaDug · 09/02/2020 17:05

So many opinions on our weather nowadays but like the OP said these storms are not new. They just have names now where in the past we called it winter.

iismum · 09/02/2020 17:09

It's caused by wind farms

No single weather event or forest fire can be blamed on climate change, its about a pattern. Unfortunately this fact is frequently ceased upon by climate change deniers.

iismum · 09/02/2020 17:10

@HaudMaDug - sure, these storms are not new. But the frequency is.

june2007 · 09/02/2020 17:10

Yes I would like to explore the science of the 2caused by windfarms" theory.

iismum · 09/02/2020 17:12

I think the ‘causes by wind farms’ theory is joke?!

Sparklesocks · 09/02/2020 17:13

It isn’t that one event is caused by climate change, it’s a series of things happening simultaneously which are the effects of the changing climate as a whole. And things happen more regularly. Heat waves for example, just because we had a really hot week 60 years ago doesn’t mean that climate change can’t possibly be causing heat waves now - but there will be more of them, and more frequently - and it’s the same with weather events like storms.

LakieLady · 09/02/2020 17:13

It's caused by wind farms.

Well, if today's weather has shown us anything, it's that we don't need any more wind farms.

We have more than enough wind as it is and don't need to make any more.

Sparklesocks · 09/02/2020 17:15

@LakieLady yes, clearly we never will need wind ever again because of a single storm.

FelicityFebruary · 09/02/2020 17:16

News now needs a "narrative."

iismum · 09/02/2020 17:17

I’m getting confused about who’s being sarcastic about wind farms and who is just plain weird. Everyone’s being sarcastic, right?

LakieLady · 09/02/2020 17:17

Sorry, I omitted to include one of these - Wink

No comment. But YANBU imho.

RedRed9 · 09/02/2020 17:20

So many opinions on our weather nowadays

Science and opinion are two very different things @HaudMaDug

Heymacarana · 09/02/2020 17:24

these storms are not new. But the frequency is.

Any evidence to support this? No. Thought not.

Its just a winter storm, we get several every year. Always have and always will

leghairdontcare · 09/02/2020 17:24

We have more than enough wind as it is and don't need to make any more.

You've obviously met my husband.

HaudMaDug · 09/02/2020 17:25

I'm being slightly sarcastic but ten again where I live on top of a hill its stormy all year round.

Newmetoday · 09/02/2020 17:27

It’s nothing to do with climate change ffs. Sick of everything being blamed on it
