AIBU Skin on chips

TheFastandTheCurious · 09/02/2020 16:26

I despise skin on chips, it totally puts me off a place if that's all they served, my monthly KFC treat was ruined when they changed theirs.

Most people I talk to think I'm the weird one for not liking them but I cannot be swayed, the thought of putting them in my mouth makes me 🤮

There should be a choice yes, skin off should always be available

I was always told that you should never eat potato skins as they are the part that has absorbed all the chemicals like pesticides and herbicides. I was told this by a potato farmer. None of their family, friends etc ever ate the skins for this reason.

Sparklesocks · 09/02/2020 17:54

@thenightsky interesting - that’s news to me. Would the skin generally be strong enough to stop any chemicals seeping through to the main body then?
Fortunately I’ve been lucky so far in my skin eating!

KnifeAngel · 09/02/2020 18:04

I agree with you they are horrible. KFC chips used to be lovely. I don't like wedges either. If I ever have a jacket potato I only eat the insides not the skin.

TheFastandTheCurious · 09/02/2020 19:51

Yeah I don't eat the skin on jackets either and I can't eat a banana if there's any black on it

YABU

I love skins on chips and on baked pots too
Some fibre to chew

I love skin on apples too - so BK's apple "chips" without are wimpy shite

Donkeytail · 09/02/2020 20:30

I love skin on chips. Have never been to KFC though so can't comment on theirs. The skin on jacket potatoes is the best bit.

thenightsky · 09/02/2020 20:51

@Sparklesocks The skin retains the nasty pesticides and herbicides as they are sprayed onto the crop whilst the potato is growing. Then the potato gets a dose of what is effectively bleach just before harvest to kill off the green tops. I'm not eating that, I can tell you!

SnorkMaiden81 · 09/02/2020 20:56

I've nothing against skin on chips at all, but KFC's are horrible, and puny portions like a PP said.

MorganKitten · 09/02/2020 20:58

Fresh skin on in chips, not fast food, taste great

IncyWincyGrownUp · 09/02/2020 21:25

KFC suck purely because they won’t let you have mash instead of chips.

GladAllOver · 10/02/2020 10:32

What about the skin on baby new potatoes? If they have the same chemicals, do you skin them as well?

thenightsky · 10/02/2020 10:37

Yes, I rub the skin off new potatoes too.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 10/02/2020 10:42

YANBU they taste weird. Like they are burt. Don't like the skin on a baked potato either, skin on chips is just the same. Horrible back taste. KFC should lose business for changing their chips.

Lima45 · 10/02/2020 10:45

Yanbu, personally I'm not picky and will eat either, but autistic DP and DD both hate skin on chips (they can't get on with the texture), and as more places go that way our choices for eating out are growing smaller and smaller as time goes on.

I wouldn't mind paying a small premium to get chips without skins on, just wish we could get the choice

Bubblemonkey · 10/02/2020 10:49

KFC does shit chips. But love skin on chips 🤤

TheFastandTheCurious · 10/02/2020 10:50

@GladAllOver, I don't buy new potatoes and wouldn't eat them when out as they always have the peel on.

@Lima45, totally my thoughts - there should always be the choice.

When we go out now I ask if the chips/fries are skin on and if they are I'll either ask for skin off or have a different kind of potato like mash. Most places won't accommodate skin off as they buy them in skin on

@thenightsky

That'll be why we have so many people in intensive care with potato poisoning then 🙄

GladAllOver · 10/02/2020 17:52

Yes, I hear spudskinitis is quite prevalent at the moment.

TheFastandTheCurious · 11/02/2020 18:23

Mine's more of an appearance issue, I can't eat crisps or chips with any black bits, so don't eat chippy chips so can't definitely can't eat the skins. Same with bananas or any other bruised fruit, the thought of swallowing a bruised bit or a black bit makes me feel sick. I do eat fries from other places but have to examine every one for 'marks' first lol.

That's my only weird thing

I think you’ll be in the minority here OP however, if you don’t like them, you don’t like them

MissConductUS · 11/02/2020 18:34

Skin on all the way. Chips from five guys are yum.

Five Guys is food of the gods, chips included. They cut the potatoes fresh in each location.
