To wonder where the hell my sex drive came from ?

Hopefully not tmi -
I’ve had zero sex drive for about 7 years , sleeping with dh once a week if he’s lucky (and always the same boring position) and making excuses like the old “I have a headache” or “it’s time of the month” , but for the last few days I’ve not left him alone and I think he’s a bit shell shocked !
I recently came off the pill (about 3 months ago ) and started using a different form of protection as I was getting headaches all the time and migraines once or twice a month so aibu to think it was my pill that sapped any kind of sexual interest ?
Wished I’d known sooner If that is the case as it had caused lots of friction / upset in the past .

The POP killed my sex drive. I hadn’t realised how bad it was until I stopped it.

MrsTWH · 09/02/2020 11:59

The pill also killed mine stone dead (though also didn’t like my partner very much either!)

Rubychard · 09/02/2020 12:03

I was on a pill a Few years ago which had the same effect.

OhTheTastyNuts · 09/02/2020 12:03

Yes the pill had that affect on me too! I didn't really notice until I came off it. We use condoms now and my sex drive is back to where it should be!

SimplySteveRedux · 09/02/2020 12:10

You mention migraines, are you receiving any medication for them, and if so what they are. Any triptans? I've been on literally all of them and both rizatriptan and sumatriptan killed my sex drive. Any other medication, opioids, benzodiazepines and anti-sickness drugs can massively impact sexual desire. I can find my list of which opioids, benzodiazepines, a ti-sickness impacted me.

Almost forgot, depression medications (SSRI are worse this. SNRI) can kill desire and it can take some time after coming off them to release the brains hold on traits such as sex drive. (Same meds for anxiety, PTSD).

SunshineAngel · 09/02/2020 12:12

My sex drive also all but disappeared when I went on the pill. However, I was taking it to try and regulate my periods and clear up my skin, both of which it did perfectly, so I could never come off it! Or not in the near future at least.

eurochick · 09/02/2020 12:18

The pill killed my libido too. I'm sure that's one of the reasons it's so effective...

FizzyIce · 09/02/2020 12:24

Bit relieved to hear that that’s what it probably is.
Sad to think I spent so many years thinking it was because I didn’t fancy my dh and it’s what he thought too Sad
@SimplySteveRedux no , not on any medication like that , I did a very stupid thing and didn’t tell the gp as knew they’d take me off the pill I was on as I hated the mini pill

@SunshineAngel yes! I chose Yasmin because it helped my friends skin so much and it helped mine too .
My skin isn’t that bad now I’ve stopped but get the odd one and my skin is oilier and hair is too but I can deal with that.
Hopefully one day you can come off them and find an alternative as it’s a real catch 22.

Yes it’ll be the pill. Any kind of hormonal contraception has the same effect on me. I loved my implant because it stopped my horrendous periods but it killed my libido stone dead.

FizzyIce · 09/02/2020 12:27

@FizzyIce Yep, I'm on Yasmin too, so I guess it could definitely be that that's causing lack of sex drive!

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 09/02/2020 12:31

When I came off the pill I was honestly a different woman

When I was on it I didn't notice it was making me feel crap, I had a low sex drive but put it down to other things.

But about a month after coming off it I wanted sex all the time, I was happier, less anxious, more social, I lost weight because I was craving food less and just generally happier. I felt in general a lot lighter. Like it was like the big weight was lifted from me

hidinginthenightgarden · 09/02/2020 12:54

I had the same thing. Came off the pill in November and sex drive is back!

dollyknocker · 09/02/2020 13:08

Has anyone noticed a negative effect on sex drive with the mirena coil? I'm considering getting one put in but really worried about this aspect! I too found the pill killed it off.

Rubychard · 09/02/2020 18:13

The pill can also cause migraines. This was the reason I stopped taking the combined pill.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/02/2020 18:33

There was a news story recently about the pill and depression. Basically women had been saying for years and years that it caused or exacerbated their depression, but nobody listened because apparently women just like to make a fuss Hmm When people finally looked into it, they found a clear link. I lost pretty much a whole decade to the pill. I thought it was just who I was.

Member984815 · 09/02/2020 18:35

Yasmin did that to me too

FizzyIce · 09/02/2020 21:18

@Rubychard, yep, only had one since I stopped taking them .
Was getting them once a month like clock work and then more frequent before I decided enough was enough .
@JesusInTheCabbageVan definitely , I’ve been suffering from depression for atleast 15 years and just in the last 8-12 weeks I’ve felt almost normal and actually quite happy.
I too had just assumed it was just how I was .Can’t believe I wasted so many years being in pain and and low .
Yasmin has a lot to answer for

@ FizzyIce
For me it’s been a long time now. For a period of about 5 years during my mid twenties, the number of migraines I had doubled every year. When I saw the doctor she had no hesitation in saying that was the reason why. I’m almost 50 now and I occasionally get one now I’m menopausal.

Greenpop21 · 09/02/2020 21:49

It’s the pill or lack of it. I haven’t been on it for 20 years but I noticed a major difference. One week of the month in particular I was really in the mood 24/7.
