To not know what waste disposal is for?

We moved somewhere with waste disposal- I've never had it before and don't really get what you use it for? There were no instructions left by the previous owners so I have no guide. Do you use one and if so how?

I have one but I don't use it. I've never had one before so it doesn't even cross my mind to use it!

The sink thing? You just chuck all food waste down the sink & turn it on. It blends it all up & it goes the same way as the water.

Whatever you do, don't stick your hand in, I'm still haunted by a scene from Final Destination many moons ago 🙈

WhatWouldJasonBourneDo · 09/02/2020 12:07

Yes, absolutely no hands. Also, only ever turn on the motor while you have water running.

mencken · 09/02/2020 12:12

it is a very entitled method of getting rid of food waste by using water and electricity. use a compost bin and minimise what you waste.

longhaulstress · 09/02/2020 12:14

Ours was great for a few years until it wasn't then it's given us no end of grief!!

Good for small bits of food just no bones and ours didn't like peelings as they seemed to slip through the holes before being ground up and would clog the sink up, we also had the same with cornflakes!

Our instructions said no bleach to be poured down it just hot water and chop up some lemon to run through the grinder to freshen it up.

Winterwoollies · 09/02/2020 12:14

Did you mean to sound as judgy as you did, @mencken?

BruceAndNosh · 09/02/2020 12:16

It's an Execution Chamber for teaspoons

Bonkersblond · 09/02/2020 12:17

Well I’ve got one and I love it, it beats having maggots in the compost bin the council provide.

mencken · 09/02/2020 12:17

sorry, forgot this is MN, full of oversensitive little flowers where facts are seen as rude.

Those are facts. Obviously most on here are parents and most of those don't actually give a fuck about the planet, but waste disposals do waste energy and clean water.

science - true whether you like it or not.

pigsDOfly · 09/02/2020 12:18

We used to have one in our house many years ago. It was the type that had a sort of stopper thing in the top that you had to turn to make it work so it was very safe.

If you have one that is permanently open keep it turned off at the mains when it's not in use.

AlexaAmbidextra · 09/02/2020 12:21

I have a waste disposal unit which all food waste goes down. I refuse to have a fucking awful food caddy stinking up my kitchen. So I’m entitled and I don’t give a single shit.

SoupDragon · 09/02/2020 12:34

This probably explains why the sewers are in such a bad state with fatbergs.

Catting · 09/02/2020 12:42

I heard they scooped off the scum and it went to compost anyway??
