To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Always expect the Spanish inquisition

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Stickybeaksid · 08/02/2020 15:46

@Tsubasa1 if you don’t like lions or witches can I suggest dressing up as a wardrobe instead. Don’t think wardrobes have ever offended anyone

Mlou32 · 08/02/2020 15:46

You are utterly ridiculous.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/02/2020 15:47

Jesus wept.Get a grip seriously.

Lagrime · 08/02/2020 15:47

@StCharlotte I read that as 'wanking the plank'. Grin

Maybe less suitable for children's parties than dressing up as a pirate.

OP, you're pure comedy gold.

I want a Stormtrooper party now, and I'm supposed to be an adult...

Schmoozer · 08/02/2020 15:49

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 08/02/2020 15:49

We're shore the OP is having us on here and have made them walk the plank. We can leave this thread to stand though if you want to crack on with the pirate puns...

Please do, one to treasure.

Random18 · 08/02/2020 15:52

My DS is running about the living room at moment in a pirate costume. 1st it was waving a light sabre from star wars, then a pirate sword, then a toy army knife and now back to pirate sword.

Dd has just picked up the light sabre so just about to have a fight between pirate sword and light sabre.

Bad parenting here GrinGrinGrin

My local swimming pool had a pirates and mermaids party the other week.
Since then all the kids from the local primary school have been calling out to sailors and making them crash on their rocks. The mermaids have been eating the sailors while the pirates steal their treasure.
It’s been a chaotic time in the north east I tell ya!

Clangus00 · 08/02/2020 15:52

What’s a pirate’s favourite mode of transport?

A cargh!

contrary13 · 08/02/2020 15:52

Y'know, OP, women were pirates too:

www.history.com/news/5-notorious-female-pirates

Allowing a small child to indulge in the magic of make-believe, just for a few hours... is okay. More than okay. To be encouraged, in fact, otherwise when they're older - they won't know how to occupy themselves and you'll be run ragged! Let your 4 year old be precisely that: 4 years old. And understand that by them pretending to be a pirate is unlikely to result in a shit-tonne of bad behaviours. Those won't come until they're at least 14!

dayswithaY · 08/02/2020 15:53

I think I've reached peak Mumsnet with this one. Sick as a parrot.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 08/02/2020 15:54

Op unclench.

cheeseislife8 · 08/02/2020 15:54

This thread has brightened up my day considerably! Wow 😄

Beautiful3 · 08/02/2020 15:57

I agree with you. There are still violent pirates at sea, kidnapping and stealing from other ships. It's crazy that we dont make that connection.

reluctantbrit · 08/02/2020 15:57

We had a pirate theme work Christmas party one year. No human was killed, raped or the company’s accounts ransacked. We just had such a great time some still talk about it years later.

Poor kid, you will come across a lot in the years to come. How a out all the dress up days in school? We had Stone Age, Anglo-Saxon, Vikings, Greek, Romans, all not known for being peaceful characters but quite a violent bunch.
