I went in to pick up 2 Danish noticed someone leaning their hand right in over Danish to pick up something from the back. I am afraid I went into mum mode & pointed to the utensil to pick them up - It makes me cringe especially when you think of the bugs going round...

YANBU. I never, ever buy from the help yourself bakery.....ever since I was on hols all inclusive and witnessed a little boy pick his nose then literally rummage through the pile of pastries on offer to find his dad a specific flavour. He literally picked up and examined the majority of them whilst holding them aloft and yelling across the pool to his dad to enquire "is it this one dad?" bleurghh....hate all shared public help yourself....salad bars, carveries, buffets cos kids, and grown ups, pick up stuff, lick it, prod, poke, cough, sneeze and flick bogies at it!! Yuk, yuk, yuk

I can't get too worked up about it TBH.

I visit Lidl a couple of times a a week, usually just as the doors open at 8am, bakery section is stacked high, lots of stuff still warm.

I usually pop in at 8am on a Sunday morning to get fresh breakfast rolls and croissants.

In the lidl's in portugal the trays of pastries are sited behind clear plastic and you have to use a utensil to push your pastry over to a tube which it then slides down before you can pick it up. I don't know why the uks ones can't do this too

Mollie3 · 06/02/2020 20:09

Portugal so much more hygienic than the UK pastry free for all

Once I saw a couple in a supermarket go up to the fresh baked goods and rummage through literally every tray trying to find stuff ‘still warm mmmmmmm!’ And this done with bare hands. They must have seen me gawping in horror as the woman said ‘for your information I’ve just been to the loo so washed my hands.’ I just raised my eyebrows and mosied on out of there towards the pre packages pastries 😳

potatoesofthenight · 06/02/2020 20:15

I saw a woman in Morrisons take one of the plastic forks at the salad bar and eat a bit from each of the salads.

Thesearmsofmine · 06/02/2020 20:16

Those tongs will be germ ridden, I’ve seen them on the floor before and people pick them up and put them back.

I like the sound of the way they do it in Portugal.

Whatsforu · 06/02/2020 20:17

The tongs are manky and germ ridden!!! I go for the back ones and use my hands, don't get my sleeves in the way and only touch the one I want.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 06/02/2020 20:20

I don’t buy anything from the open bakery for this reason. People either use the tongs for everything, and ruin it, or lean over and touch everything, ruining it.

I’m surprised they’re still going. There’s always people touching/sneezing/coughing on them, and then there’s the flies, and the people who drop things and put them back...

speakout · 06/02/2020 20:20

I have never seen the flies> I feel I am missing out here.

CorianderLord · 06/02/2020 20:21

Well so long as they only touch their item it's probably more hygienic than the never watched tongs tbh

FlamingoAndJohn · 06/02/2020 20:21

I wonder how often the tongs are washed.

I prefer what they have in Germany all the pastries are in a Perspex box which has some kind of slider that pulls towards you with the one you want.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/02/2020 20:22

And of course the alternative, which is wrapping each pastry individually in plastic, isn't even slightly bad for the environment.

Oh, hang on....

JigsawsAreInPieces · 06/02/2020 20:22

I don't buy fresh bakery goods from lidl for this reason.

ofwarren · 06/02/2020 20:25

I never eat of those things, or any open produce except fruit and veg, which you wash or cook anyway. People cough, sneeze and touch them with unwashed hands 🤮

Ponoka7 · 06/02/2020 20:25

I also go for the back ones and make sure that I don't touch any of the other ones.

The tongs haven't been cleaned in my local store for a week now.

Streamside · 06/02/2020 20:29

Lidl bakery products aren't clean anyway.I 've pointed out flies on bakery products, brought it to their attention and emailed them.Don't buy them.

RhitaGawr · 06/02/2020 23:00

Last time I went into Lidl, the tiny flies hovering around the freshly baked stuff were enough to put me off ever getting them again. I lifted one up (a pizza one, with tongs) to reveal a cloud of the greedy little bastards.
