Smoke alarm

I have just found out that my parents don’t have a smoke alarm. It came up in a recent discussion. They didn’t seem to bothered about it, said it was a nuisance and that they turn all electrics off before going to bed. The reason for not having a smoke alarm is that apparently cooking sets the alarm off constantly. My DS2 sometimes stays overnight at their home. I have been really annoyed since I found out and am no longer happy to have DS spend the night. Would it be unreasonable to tell my parents that until they install a smoke alarm, my DS will no longer stay over?

Where was their alarm that kept being set off? Can you persuade them that having one in the hall/landing should be okay provided they remember to shut the kitchen door before burning the toast/taking the roast out?

I have some sympathy - in our first flat, the smoke alarm was immediately outside our extremely tiny kitchen (so small you couldn't have had more than one person in there when opening a cupboard or the oven). We did have to remember to shut the kitchen doors when opening the oven, especially as the alarms were mains-powered and wired to the other flats. On the other hand, we were very glad of the alarms when there was a fire in one of the other flats!

@lanthanum, The alarm was directly outside the kitchen, just as in your situation. I don’t think it could be positioned anywhere else given the layout of their home.

God yanbu at all. My kids would be going nowhere near until they got one!
Could they afford a hardwired one? I think they are less likely to go off with burnt toast etc.

Smoke alarm going off occasionally whilst cooking is a small inconvenience if it saves your life one day.
