So we've an intercom system here where you can see who's at the main entrance on a video thing.

So there's two men, one elderly, one maybe 30's.

The guy goes 'Hi my name is Yatsik, we're looking for Polish speaking people in this block of flats - Do you know any?'. My answer was no, because there aren't any afaik, so he just said 'ok thanks' and then I could see them walk away.

Why would they be looking for Polish speakers? He had an accent of sorts, so perhaps Polish himself?

I'm such a nosey ass that I'm raging that I didn't have the wherewithal to ask him Why!!!!

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 10:49

I could have said 'who's asking?' lol. Like they do in movies. Just to be nosey. I think I was a little relieved they weren't looking for me tbh.

Maybe the older guy only speaks Polish and is hoping to meet neighbours he can chat to?

PleaseStopCallingMe · 06/02/2020 10:51

Maybe there's an emergency requiring a Polish speaker?

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 10:52

It was the older guy doing the talking and he spoke English. Just a slight accent.

Feel like running after them now to ask them why. God, why didn't my nosiness kick in on the hop!

Is Yatsik even a Polish name? I may have spelled it incorrectly.

Sounds really really dodgy.

amaryl · 06/02/2020 10:56

This happens a lot according to our local Facebook pages. It’s some sort of scam.
No idea what!

Thelnebriati · 06/02/2020 10:56

Why would they be looking for Polish speakers?
Sometimes people pay or borrow money to get here, or they pay to get jobs. Dont tell anyone where your Polish neighbours live just in case you put them at risk.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 10:56

They both were dressed in green, like ambulance crew green or a Morrisons uniform - that sort of olive green.
Now I'll never know!!! Doh!

That’s very weird

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 10:58

I don't have any Polish neighbours, but if I had I probably wouldn't have said so without asking why.

OP posts:
CuppaTea82 · 06/02/2020 10:58

I had this a few weeks ago, two young women asking if I was polish and then did I know of any polish people who lived in the street. I just said I didn't and off they went!

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 06/02/2020 10:59

What sort of scam could it be? So if OP had said yes there is someone at no. 42, what then?

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 11:00

People looking for Polish speakers specifically?

OP posts:
Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 11:02

Jeez - who da fuck would be roaming the country looking for polish speaking people? I'm in London - where are you CuppaTea82?

OP posts:
Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 11:04

He didn't ask for just Polish - he asked for 'Polish speaking people'. There's 8 flats in this block and if downstairs rings I normally hear as the buzzer/intercom is really loud. I'm not even the first number, I'm the third. Then they just tootled off. Strange. Oh dear - it's going to annoy me for the day now.

We have a large polish community where I live and this happens often here. I asked my neighbour who is polish why they do this and it is to meet the local community and help people who are new to the country/area acclimatise. It's actually quite nice in that they are helping each other.

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 11:09

Ok, that makes sense that maybe they're trying to find fellow Polish. He gave his name first, so maybe it wasn't anything sinister.

I can’t imagine what sort of scam it could possibly be... Don’t identify your Polish neighbours because you’ll put them at risk Confused
How, exactly??

BigFatLiar · 06/02/2020 11:13

Perhaps they needed something translated?

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 11:15

My first vivid imagination thought was that they were debt collectors who were looking for someone. Oh well. I'll put it down to one of life's unanswered questions!

Jacek is Polish, pronounced Yatsik. Not that that helps you work out what was going on Grin

Saylwhat · 06/02/2020 11:16

Google might be a better bet! Lol
