to wonder who buys the more expensive fuel

The one that's higher octane and costs about 10-15p more per litre.

Why would you buy it? Surely it doesn't make that much difference?

We do. My husband thinks it’s actually better in terms of miles per gallon on the motorway. Dunno if that is the case.

Elbeagle · 05/02/2020 19:33

DH does, but only from Costco!

DaveMinion · 05/02/2020 19:34

It actually does make a difference. It’s purer and much better for the engine.

I used to get it when it was cheaper but just get the normal diesel now. I always get BP or shell fuel though. Used to use shell as their reward system was better but now bp is the better one and it’s cheaper here. Only get supermarket if no option.

Meetmeinfantasyland · 05/02/2020 19:36

My DH! I go for the standard in my car.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 05/02/2020 19:38

I always wanted to, to give the car a treat Blush

Whatnametoday5 · 05/02/2020 19:39

My DH does!

If I fill his car up he gets the standard stuff....I’ve never noticed anything different- nor has he - I’ve never told him :)

SpringFan · 05/02/2020 19:41

My son - for his beloved elderly Golf! And he drives 10 miles to get it.
He insists it runs better.

RedSheep73 · 05/02/2020 19:44

DH does, he swears his bmw runs better on it. I don't bother though.

Feelsdeadpeople · 05/02/2020 19:45

I do, because it’s DH’s preference & I honestly can’t sit through that explanation of why it’s better for the engine one more time 😴

Stevienickssleeves · 05/02/2020 19:46

"Unless your engine is knocking, buying higher octane gasoline is a waste of money. ... In fact, in most cases, using a higher octane gasoline than your owner's manual recommends offers absolutely no benefit. It won't make your car perform better, go faster, get better mileage, or run cleaner."

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/02/2020 19:52

We do occasionally... DH declares it clears the engine out. I know nothing about car engines, he did Automotive engineering at university so on this subject I defer to him.

amazedmummy · 05/02/2020 19:55

I used to every so often in my last cat purely because it was recommended in the manual.

amazedmummy · 05/02/2020 19:55

Car not cat

scaryteacher · 05/02/2020 19:58

Dh does as his car is 51 years old and needs it. His last not so old car also had what was called 98 in Belgium, whilst mine ran on 95, but his was a turbo.

Bargebill19 · 05/02/2020 19:59

Hubby did in his old fiesta - but it still ran like it was filled with water. Changed his car in the end as that was easier !

ElphiasDoge · 05/02/2020 19:59

I did once by accident. I presumed it was just the equivalent of buying Tesco Finest Food but DH says it’s a better formulation fit sports cars but of no benefit in ours. Didn’t seem to do any harm anyway. Haven’t done it again!

Zilla1 · 05/02/2020 20:01

I see the Costco website in the UK says 'Variations in deposit control additive formulations are the main difference between brands of fuel' so depending on what you buy and the octane requirements of your car, it may be those additives rather than the octane that make the difference.

Your poor cat Grin

I've never bothered buying it because I don't know what difference it makes, I guess I'd find out if I was ever prepared to spend the extra money on it but it's so much extra - I was pondering it when I was filling up this morning and saw it was 15p/litre more Shock

Been proven repeatedly to make bugger all difference.

ElderAve · 05/02/2020 20:16

I've always assumed it's aimed at the same people who insist on buying branded toilet paper Grin

GameSetMatch · 05/02/2020 20:17

I buy it probably three or four tines a year to give my car a little treat, if I’m feeling flush or something.

Clevs · 05/02/2020 20:19

I buy it because I have a performance car and it's recommended on the sticker by my petrol cap.

Henlie · 05/02/2020 20:21

We use it in our sports car......it’s recommended for high performance cars.

eggontoast2 · 05/02/2020 20:22

Cars with high performance engines run better on it.

whydobirds · 05/02/2020 20:25

I do because it can withstand more pressure before igniting and I drive a fast car with the kind of fuel system that benefits from that.

Aside from that, I'm sure I get more miles out of a tank, but that's more likely because my engine's cleaner than because of high octane fuel.

Combination of more miles and quite a lot of reward points for buying that specific fuel from one of the few places that sell it means it works out costing me roughly the same as ordinary petrol though.
