to wonder who buys the more expensive fuel

The one that's higher octane and costs about 10-15p more per litre.

Why would you buy it? Surely it doesn't make that much difference?

I had one car (sporty/rally edition) where the manual said only to use higher octane (it gave a minimum number). I got fed up after a couple of years and switched to the cheaper stuff and it sounded rough and started juddering and stalling at slower speeds. I changed back to the expensive stuff and it was fine.

JollyAndBright · 05/02/2020 20:28

We do,
we have a sports car and it’s better for the engine, DP is also sure he gets more miles to the gallon out of it than regular petrol.

Teenagemaw · 05/02/2020 20:32

I bought it by accident once.

Dobbytheelf · 05/02/2020 20:39

I used to buy my Golf the special petrol when I'd washed, T-Cut or chamois dried, polished all the glass and hoovered it out which was fairly regularly back in the day before I had kids. I cherished it and the special petrol made me feel better and I got Nectar points on it (AND Clubcard points because I had a Tesco Bank credit card then). Anyway, then I got a higher performance Golf and didn't really buy that one much because I had a baby soon after so it only got washed by the carwash men before it went through the washer. I felt bad because it was a much nicer car and deserved the same treatment but alas. Also all the males in my family are mechanics and they told me not to fucking bother but I still did. It drove my DH mad but I did it anyway until I couldn't afford to anymore.

PrimeYesterday · 05/02/2020 20:42

I used to when I had a car which had a large engine 3.7l, more money mo’ problems Grin
Not anymore now I have a smaller car.

ClappyFlappy · 05/02/2020 20:43

Me by mistake a few weeks ago

Purpleartichoke · 05/02/2020 20:45

Required for my car. Made very clear to us before we bought it.

yellowallpaper · 05/02/2020 20:45

DH does, his BMW runs crap without it. I asked the petrol station man and he said it cleans the engine and it's worth putting a tankful in now and again to keep the engine cleaner. No hard sell, just simple info and no reason not to believe him. So I did.

tiggertogger · 05/02/2020 20:47

Good cars require it so i do and won't buy petrol where they don't sell it. Better for performance and improves mpg for supercars.

CornflakesforBambi · 05/02/2020 20:48

I thought higher end sports cars required it? Or am I being thick? Is it a giant con then?

CornflakesforBambi · 05/02/2020 20:48

Sorry, Xpost there with tigger.

EvilPea · 05/02/2020 20:53

Yeah some cars are mapped for it, I've had to use it in some of mine. One only ran right on shell v power and another that liked 102 RON (you got a sticker when you filled up!).

Now days, its asda petrol and they can be thankful

Winterwoollies · 05/02/2020 20:54

I do. It’s much higher octane and is infinitely better for my performance car.

TheGreatWave · 05/02/2020 20:56

I bought it by accident once.

Me too Blush Luckily realised early on so just put a bit in and then filled up properly elsewhere.

ScrommidgeClaryAndSpunt · 05/02/2020 20:57

Me. Small zippy car runs noticeably better on the 99-octane stuff (usually V-Power). Large people-carrier runs very smoothly on the diesel equivalent (and seems to need fewer burn cycles on the exhaust filter). That'll do for me.

eyemask · 05/02/2020 20:58

I did today by accident. Went to the pump that only had the expensive one and started before I realised.

barneyblues · 05/02/2020 21:03

Ooops! Can you mix it with the normal stuff then?

OP posts:
MaisyMary77 · 05/02/2020 21:05

I buy it for my lawnmower. Only because the guy who serviced it said they last longer when using the good stuff. Blush

lollybee1 · 05/02/2020 21:06

I commute a very regular journey and it made no difference to me.

Rowgtfc72 · 05/02/2020 21:09

Yes you can mix it with the cheaper stuff without killing the car.
Our car runs better on it and we get more miles on the motorway with it so dh prefers it.

SimonJT · 05/02/2020 21:12

My last car was mapped to 99 octane, when I have this one done at the end of the month it will be too.

WeSavedSallySally · 05/02/2020 21:41

This is petrol isn't it, because people are mentioning diesel?

PhoneLock · 05/02/2020 21:54

Most modern petrol cars should be able to "map" themselves to 99 octane.
