to wonder who buys the more expensive fuel

The one that's higher octane and costs about 10-15p more per litre.

Why would you buy it? Surely it doesn't make that much difference?

We’ve just bought a new car and are now paying loads more in petrol a week for it with the super fuel. It’s supposed to be loads better for the engine and we want to look after this car as we have it for at least 5 years!

My car, that asks for the high-octane fuel, was I think about 15 grand list price when it was new. Just a "sports" hatchback and not even massive on the power. You could get a good used one now for £1500-2000 or so. So it's not only the realms of expensive stuff.

EvilPea · 06/02/2020 15:00

If I remember rightly some of the normal 10 year old petrol Tfsi a3’s ask for it.
So not expensive or flash

Hingeandbracket · 06/02/2020 15:06

I had a petrol A3 that supposedly needed the higher octane fuel. It was a crap car, whether I used that fuel or not. By some margin the worst car I have owned - no more Audis for me.

Ok, I have just read my handbook whilst waiting at the school gates. It does say 'use only high quality diesel' and '(x company strongly recommends the use of premium fuel'. I think my cars list price was £70k+ (I know @tiggertogger is in a different league with her Ferrari though Wink). Today I have been driving around with premium fuel and I can't say I've noticed a difference.

Biker47 · 06/02/2020 15:34

Me, because my car has been modified to run on it. If I use the lower RON petrol a possible side effect is the engine will get too hot and cause damage.

LolaSkoda · 06/02/2020 17:11

I use premium fuel. I also pay extra at servicing to get fuel and engine flushes. I feel like I can tell the difference in the fuel, but this may just be psychological!
