To think Tracy Brabin should be able to wear what she wants ?

She's been the subject of criticism and vitriol all day about her dress, which she apparently wore to an earlier social event. She's a bright, lively and committed MP, who cares what she wears?

OP posts:
NightsOfCabiria · 05/02/2020 20:08

Well, she has been treated harshly but it IS inappropriate attire for the house of commons. She should have worn a jacket/shawl.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 05/02/2020 20:10

Oh thanks.

I didn't read the article.

PanicAndRun · 05/02/2020 20:10

I don't want to see her bare naked shoulders anymore

What is wrong with shoulders? Genuine question

Sagradafamiliar · 05/02/2020 20:16

Are naked ankles ok?

ElderAve · 05/02/2020 20:18

I think the vitriol was ridiculous but if you want to be taken seriously you need to dress the part. That might be right or wrong but it absolutely would have made the front pages if a man had his shoulder out in the HoC IMO

Floribundance · 05/02/2020 20:18

Shoulder, meh. I don’t want to see her armpit crease.

Sagradafamiliar · 05/02/2020 20:19

Why 😂

Mrsjayy · 05/02/2020 20:20

She was saying today that breast feeding is now approved in HoC so we might be seeing more bare naked shoulders very soon Grin

Floribundance · 05/02/2020 20:21

Just not Michael Fabricant please

PanicAndRun · 05/02/2020 20:24

Armpits and shoulders the pinnacle of debauchery .

Floribundance · 05/02/2020 20:27

A bikini on the beach? Normal. Walking down the high street? Odd. That dress in a restaurant? Normal. In the House of Commons? Odd.

barneyblues · 05/02/2020 20:28

You can breast feed without showing your shoulders, or indeed anything else.

OxfordCat · 05/02/2020 20:31

@Noeuf then you totally missed the point of her calling out the misogynist trolls 🙄🙄

SirChing · 05/02/2020 20:31

@PanicAndRun Apologies, I didn't realise you were quoting another article. I thought you were saying YOU are John Leech. Think it was the lack of quotation marks that confused me.

Shoulder and armpit crease = inappropriate as part of us which is normally covered in formal situations. Just that. It's not a tricky concept.

SirChing · 05/02/2020 20:33

Crikey, I wouldn't want to see her breast feed then if she thinks a woman needs to get her shoulders out to breastfeed. How weird!

derxa · 05/02/2020 20:34

When I see her I'm always reminded that she replaced Jo Cox in Batley and Spen and it makes me a bit Sad
I watch a lot of politics and she is definitely trying to get noticed. She pops up regularly as a talking head. I don't like her much.

Arseaboutdarkly · 05/02/2020 20:34

Boris may appear untidy with hair like a haystack, but he doesn't display any unnecessary flesh!

The whole of Boris Johnson is unnecessary flesh

Binterested · 05/02/2020 20:37

Not appropriate. I would have a word with anyone (man or woman) who turned up to work dressed like that (or the male equivalent).

She doesn’t deserve the trolling but dressing appropriately is really a relatively simple thing to achieve. Every other female MP manages it.

derxa · 05/02/2020 20:38

As for people criticising Jeremy C. he looks very smart these days.

iwunderwhy · 05/02/2020 20:38

Alsohuman You claim you're in your 70's so you were born post WW2; women then wore skirts well over the knee, so certainly clothes baring the shoulders since you were were born in ANY decade after, was and is considered sexy...especially at work.

So If you want to make a little point try to be truthful with it.

Weirdwonders · 05/02/2020 20:43

Was her dress even in the news before her tweet? All she did by ‘calling out’ the insults was bring them (and herself) to everyone’s attention. You’re never going to put twitter trolls in their place, they’re best ignored.

GinnyStrupac · 05/02/2020 20:57

I think we all need to get over seeing Tracy's shoulder. I am all for appropriate attire when it is necessary, but it is not the end of the world when somebody gets it a bit wrong, is it? I can see how all the circumstances conspired to make it happen. It's fine. I care far more about whether an MP is doing their best to do a good job than what they wear. Tracy is still a relatively new MP and Jo Cox was always going to be a hard act to follow, but I always get the impression that Tracy is doing a good job and actually cares.

But Shouldergate isn't really about all that, is it? It is just another excuse for the haters to crawl out and abuse someone on the basis that she is a woman standing up and making herself heard, and in that place too. How dare she.

Alsohuman · 05/02/2020 21:06

I don’t claim to be in my 70s. I claim to be - and am - in my 60s. Bare shoulders have not, until these neo puritanical times, been regarded as flaunting sexuality. And I’ve seen many women wearing cold shoulder tops at work so why the outrage over Brabin’s dress, I have no idea.

jcyclops · 05/02/2020 21:26

Although the dress code is not written down, most people know there is one and work within the rules. For men, collar & ties were compulsory until June 2017 when Bercow said no-tie was OK (mainly due to Jared O'Mara's cerebral palsy causing difficulty wearing a tie). In January 2020 Ian Mearns spoke wearing a t-shirt (with a jacket). Both O'Mara and Mearns were criticised, but not to the extent that Brabin has been. There have been many prior instances when MPs attended a division (vote) when not properly dressed. Brabin should probably have started her speech "I apologise to the house that due to unfortunate circumstances my dress does not meet the usual sartorial standards here, but I hope you will forgive me and the sight of a bare shoulder doesn't cause distress to any honourable members.... or Boris!"

Jennifer2r · 05/02/2020 21:59

I DON'T FUCKING CARE ABOUT HER OUTFIT.

we pay so, so much to have them debating for us in parliament.

I care so, so little about her outfit. Jesus Christ.
