Currently on the path to getting my child assessed. While researching it all I have had somewhat of a 'lightbulb' moment. I think I may have it too. It makes so much sense to me but I am not sure if I am just seeing what I want to see (because it would be easier to accept than Im just lazy, scattered etc).

Looking for personal stories of how you came to realise you have this? I am going to GP so am not looking for medical advice - just want to see if there are similarities?

My DH has ADHD and diagonised as an adult. However everyone expected he had it from a child. Very obvious for him as he struggles with Organization, lack of conceration, addictive personality, can go off the handles over really silly things, struggles with sleep, does things without thinking and can be very hyperactive at times.

My DH has ADHD, both a psychiatrist, private GP and CBT therapist all agree, plus it’s obvious. However his GP is completely dismissive so he hasn’t got an NHS diagnosis.
DS has ADHD but the consultant won’t give him an official diagnosis because he isn’t failing in school, however verbally she agrees he has it and says school should implement ADHD strategies for him.
I believe I may have ADD, I tick all the boxes and my school reports could be substituted for DS’s we are peas in a pod! However I spoke to my GP who suggested I focus on my child instead of myself, said we all have busy lives and I just need to handle it, then refused to discuss it further, didn’t even look at the notes I’d brought with me.

Good luck!

I was diagnosed at 35 and from what I understand, I'm part of a "wave" of women who are being diagnosed at this age because when I was a child in school they didn't think girls could get ADHD and because ADHD presents differently in girls.

It was actually suggested to me by a marriage counselor that I had it. DH and I were having communications problems that were predominately caused by my inability to focus on things, or pay attention to him for any length of time and it was obviously causing issues (I was also struggling with work and kids).

When I looked into ADHD in females it was like by entire life suddenly made sense.

Hulks thats exactly how I feel!! I was terrible at school and really underachieved but have done ok academically since. (Although struggle with deadlines!)

Also having major marriage troubles and find it so difficult to engage on an emotional level. I struggle to 'feel' my feelings and cant communicate.

I feel such s failure because I can't 'adult'. Bills dont get paid, appointments get missed, phone gets cut off loose bank cards... write about 100 lists a week set reminders & alarms and constantly feel overwhelming despair.

Also my brain is in constants overdrive. Liberally as soon as i open my eyes in the morning the 'noise' rushes in. Having a morning pee still half asleep but have had about a million thoughts already. Im exhausted!

Jade I did well in school in subjects where I could read the information and remember it, but not where I actually had to pay attention like Math.

I can "adult" as long as I can adult right away. So bills are paid online as soon as my pay gets in.

Dh knows it's better to write things to me then tell me things.

Concerta has helped A LOT!

Yes I have always done well in English (am a ferocious reader) but was never able to concentrate on maths. Uni work was ok because I was super intetested in the subjects.

Any advice on how to broach thus with GP?
