Can the sonographer give a diagnosis?

I had an ultrasound today due to bladder issues. My family history of dms ovarian cancer and late dfs cancer told me that this would be to gain information and I would not get any info today.
Something was seen on my left kidney.A few extra pics were taken.I was amazed that I was told I have a kidney stone but my bladder looks ok.
Does anyone know if this is a diagnosis?I had a blood test so I am waiting a GPS call soon. Can the sonographer say what they see and interpret the scan?(I know they are intelligent people).

I don’t think they can actually diagnose.
When I had my 20 wk scan with dd, the sonography said her kidney “looked” duplex, therefore a second scan was needed. We went back for a second scan and a consultant was present and it was the consultant who ruled out the duplex kidney.
I also had a scan for fibroids and it was sonographer who ruled the fibroids out.
I think it might be worth speaking to your GP to see how this will proceed.

Its not a diagnosis, its an interpretation of what they could see on the screen, and they should have said that.

Was it definitely a sonographer? My last ultrasound was done by a radiologist so they could give a diagnosis.

My dp had a scan for a particular cancer, sonographer confirmed what it was in the room. Bit of a bombshell to say the least.

Tbh I was too distracted by needing a pee.Maybe they were a radiologist.😔

I’ve had loads of sonographs for various issues. The sonographer usually says if there’s anything to worry about e.g. yes I can see you do have gallstones but this will be confirmed with a Drs letter etc. I’d imagine that’s what will happen with your kidney stone.

The sonographer writes a report to the GP or consultant so yes, the sonographer always makes the diagnosis. In some cases they seek a second opinion eg in obstetrics before giving a definitive diagnosis. Usually in non obstetric scans the sonographer will not give results (local rules vary) to the patient due to time constraints, complexity of potential new bad diagnosis and lack of answers as to what will be done about a diagnosis.
