I'm feeling kinda guilty not sure why has they are my children after all, but i forgot to set my alarm last night, didn't wake up till 9 which I might add never happens at the weekend lol. So I thought fuck it give kids a day off.. Please tell me I am not the only one who has done this. They don't have days off unless ill but that's rare. I feel strangely guilty 🤔🤔

One of the doctors may be having cute snuggles with their DCs after forgetting the alarm, so appointments for 6 doctors are squashed into 5. Or even 4

Yes totally the same.. well done on that comparison Hmm

You did what?? You're feeling strangely guilty because it's an awful, lazy way to behave. It's disorganized, immature and bad parenting

Awful way to behave?? Are you really this dramatic in real life?

LettertoHermoine · 04/02/2020 15:55

@VestaTilley you just said what?

Vesta Vesta Vesta.....go inVESTA in a parenting course if you think OP is an awful, lazy, disorganized, immature bad parent for letting a 5 year old miss ONE day. Hilarious.

dancingfeathers · 04/02/2020 15:57

@dumboflats and that they'll have the rest of the class too considering it's not just OPs child they are there to teach.

And then the next day somebody is going to have to give up time to sort out the fact that the OP's child doesn't know what they learnt today and so will need help tomorrow when they've missed the first part of a Maths or English activity.

DumboFlats · 04/02/2020 15:59

What deeply intellectual material do you think they are learning at 5? At 5, the kids on our house were bringing home pictures of a flower they'd drawn in class.

Gatewaytochocolate · 04/02/2020 16:00

Kids won't remember if its 1 day. Just don't make it a habit.

Smilebehappy123 · 04/02/2020 16:02

Your kid is 5 years old
It's not going to scar them for life , it's not setting a bad example as they will have forgot by next week, you are not a bad person
My god the responses on here it's not the end of the world

becca3210 · 04/02/2020 16:02

@DumboFlats - how to read, write, count, develop their language skills, physical skills, social skills.. fairly important stuff!

DumboFlats · 04/02/2020 16:03

becca3210 yes and one day is going to be so detrimental to all of those things you're right.

ShinyRuby · 04/02/2020 16:03

@ItWillBeBetterinAugust
That's a really interesting post, obviously much stricter in your country & yes a bit lax here sometimes.
OP you should've got them to school & nursery. You're not setting a good example.
So many pps (usually swearing to make their pointGrin) being really dismissive of education, I'd bet you're the ones who turn up late at the end of school & get so offended if the staff dare to say anything.
Timekeeping is important. Fact. If that's uptight, that's fine with me!

Yesterdayforgotten · 04/02/2020 16:03

One day is fine as a one off, one day every week not so much.

Smilebehappy123 · 04/02/2020 16:04

All the perfect parents on here wind your necks in, the child has missed one day. what are children actually learning at school at 5 ??
If you want to lessen the guilt take said child out for an educational afternoon

Franticbutterfly · 04/02/2020 16:04

I don’t, as I like my children to have as close to 100% attendance so it’s less noticeable when I take them on holiday in term time (sometimes I get a fine, mostly I don’t and I think that is because their attendance is so good). 😬

DumboFlats · 04/02/2020 16:06

You know I'm still struggling to catch up on counting to ten because of that day off my mum gave me 30 years ago Sad

letmebefrank · 04/02/2020 16:06

I'm not going to read through 9 pages, but I will say that when a child tells me that they weren't in school because 'mommy didn't get up' or 'mommy overslept so we decided to stay home', or something along those lines, it is written up as a safeguarding concern for them.

MargotB7 · 04/02/2020 16:13

I doubt social services would get involved if it happened once and the parent never caused any other concerns.

RedskyAtnight · 04/02/2020 16:13

What no one seems to have commented on is "why" OP overslept, and why her first reaction on discovering that she had wasn't to quickly throw on some clothes and get them (at least the 5 year old) to school asap.
Instead, she seems to have gone "oh fuck it" and decided she can't be bothered taking them to school. As others have said, this will not scar her children for life. But perhaps OP ought to think about why she acted as she did?

catlovingdoctor · 04/02/2020 16:16

My mum did it once or twice.

I'm now at dental school. Dont worry ☺️

spongejack · 04/02/2020 16:19

@letmebefrank so what happens next then? The OP doesn't offend again, she says this is a one off, so presumably it goes no further?

Kitchendiscodiva · 04/02/2020 16:20

Crazy. Overslept before, yes, but get the get the kids to school whatever time it is. Not a great example.

EverSeenTheQueen · 04/02/2020 16:22

I actually agree it’s setting a poor example. My mum used to encourage us to stay off and hang out with her, or if we missed the bus ‘oh just come home’. I think it makes fixed commitments seem optional and encourages an attitude of letting yourself off the hook really easily. If it’s done then no point wringing your hands about it, but it’s not cool and I would ensure it never happens again.

deareloise · 04/02/2020 16:27

FFS can posters stop being so disparaging about what they learn at 5?

They learn to READ.

It’s a pretty important skill Hmm

Chillicheese123 · 04/02/2020 16:28

@deareloise my dd could read before starting school, and some kids around the world don’t start formally learning to read until our year 2-3, it’s not being disparaging it’s just saying one day of missed school won’t affect their skills forever

deareloise · 04/02/2020 16:29

Yes, so could I. It doesn’t mean that reception is some sort of year where no learning takes place!

Lunalady21 · 04/02/2020 16:32

I have also allowed my boys a day off for getting up late .. some days I just really feel like I can't stick the routine and feel like breaking the rules! Although it's very rare .. one day off and a duvet day with the kids isn't harming anyone .. and it won't destroy their work ethic 🙄pretty sure work places allow for a 'mental health day' these days. Something I have needed on several occasions and greatly appreciate. Don't feel guilty OP .. everyone has an off day x
