Aibu to want to keep some of my FB Messenger messages?

My crappy old phone has barely any storage. I need to update WhatsApp (which I use for work among other things) but my device says there's not enough storage. I've cleared all unnecessary data, audio, documents and a load of pictures but still don't have enough room for WhatsApp unless I uninstall FB Messenger. I've deleted all the convos I don't want to keep from there (probably about half of them) but it doesn't seem to have made a difference to the amount of storage I have free.

So now it seems I have to choose between WhatsApp and Messenger. Really?? My phone is 5 years old at the most!

Aibu to want to find a way round this?

You won’t lose your convos if you delete it but obvs can’t read them again until you find a way to reinstall it. You could also delete and reinstall apps like fb as that seems to grow and grow on my phone.

New phone? 🤷‍♀️

If it’s an android phone you can usually add an SD card for additional storage.

Backup your photos/videos to google photos (or similar) and then delete them from your phone (you can download again later if you want)

Which phone do you have?

If it’s an iphone you are either at the point or nearly at the point where WhatsApp will stop working anyway. I read something last week about Whatsapp no longer useable on older versions of ios but can’t remember the exact details.

I had a similar thing with an older ipad which I could no longer update the ios on so some apps stopped working and therefore believe what I read to be true. It could be worth investing before you delete anything else.

New phone. You’ll keep the Facebook messages if you don’t delete them, they’ll just appear on the new device.

Thanks everyone. This is really helpful!

So if I uninstall FB Messenger, I'll get my messages/convos back if I reinstall at a later date on a new phone?
