To ask Leavers 2 things (Brexit related, TW for racism)

GEEpEe · 03/02/2020 11:17

  1. How do you feel when you see that image?

As someone on the Left and Remain brigades, I've never had an experience where something I have voted for or believe in politically speaking has been grossly misappropriated by a sizeable number of those who feel the same way. One might argue that those who "punch Nazis" might meet this category but I don't think so. With them, their choice of action is where I would disagree but I mostly agree with their politics and most of their social beliefs. So my 2nd question is about that. Can you think of any examples where something like this has happened?

Any sensible racist would have voted remain. At least that way your immigrants are kept predominantly white.

GEEpEe · 03/02/2020 21:22

@GreenishMe

Okay then I'm concerned about keeping my workload down in my GP practice. Equality will mean fewer sick people for me to see.

Considering I got my foreskin removed in a ritual at a week old and I had to learn a really long sermon at 13, at best I can be a self hating Jew.

The reality will of course be that I was saved from making a choice about the antisemitism issue and whether to choose my people over the majority of people because a tactical vote to get out the Tories in my area would not have been for Labour anyway.

But we know racists aren’t sensible.

And from the ordinary Daily Mail reader to the BNP and EDL, many have taught themselves and protested loudly that it isn’t black and brown people they hate but immigrants. Any immigrants.

Hence ‘racists and xenophobes’

GreenishMe · 03/02/2020 21:42

Who, other than sick people, will visit your practice?

Perhaps healthy people will still come in droves for a fix of your warm and fuzzy charm.

jcyclops · 03/02/2020 22:33

People voted leave for many reasons and people voted remain for many reasons. If you want to brand all leavers as racist then please accept this (tongue in cheek) dose of conveniently forgotten truth.

The Remain campaign was headed by the former chairman of one of Britain's leading capitalist undertakings - a Lord no less. The remain campaign was backed by David Cameron and George Osborne and was the official policy of the Tory Party. All those voting remain were obviously right wingers following Rose, Cameron and the Tories.

Amongst those backing Leave was The Communist Party and unions such as RMT and FBU and truly extreme characters like George Galloway. Left wing policies such as nationalising the railways and giving aid to British industries could only be achieved by leaving the EU. Clearly, the only way for the truly woke "progressive left" to vote was Leave.

mothertruck3r · 04/02/2020 08:29

It's quite worrying that a GP (I am sure you consider yourself clever/intellectual) and a Jewish one at that is prepared to label a whole group of people in a derogatory way. You must know how dangerous it is to label a whole group as guilty of a perceived offence.

If a woman turns up at your practice with an STD do you immediately assume she is sleeping around? I wouldn't want you to be my GP if you are prepared to jump to such basic conclusions about 17 million people you don't know.

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 08:33

I didn't jump to any conclusions. I said that clearly in my OP where I used the word misappropriate to describe racist Leavers.

Poverty causes sickness. Less poverty would mean fewer sick people. Fewer sick people means less work for me.

That's of course not the reason I voted against the Tories but I have a feeling that people will only.be able to understand motivations that focus on self gain. I'm essentially speaking your language so you understand.

It may well have been written by someone wishing to cause trouble and as some kind of revenge towards Brexit voters.

Yes, I agree - it seems very 'staged.'

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 04/02/2020 08:59

It may well have been written by someone wishing to cause trouble and as some kind of revenge towards Brexit voters

I doubt it

I am however happy to believe that it could be written by someone who voted leave, remain, or indeed didn’t vote at all

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 09:04

I'd like to say it feels staged but unfortunately I've had many British people (mostly though not solely Caucasians) express xenophobic and racist views and expect I'd agree with them.

"Eh, doc, you must be happy that you won't have all those refugees blocking up your surgery now". This said by an overweight, smoking alcoholic who won't take his antidepressants, eat vegetables or bathe.

OP posts:
GiveHerHellFromUs · 04/02/2020 09:09

@GEEpEe did you explain to him that all patients who need treatment are welcome in your surgery, and how important looking after his own health is?

Do you confront racists IRL or do you just save your anger for the internet where you can generalise and make sweeping accusations of racism towards people who are genuinely not racist?

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 09:14

We aren't allowed to "confront racists" unless they are racist to someone and we need to protect them. If a fellow white person comes up to me and says something horrific like that, I just have to ignore it really.

Remember a patient can refuse your services in a hospital just because of your skin colour and while you do not have to then put them to the front of the white doctor's list and they'll have to wait until a doctor they approve of can see them, they can still receive care from your department. Patients are allowed to be racist, basically.

Oh please shut up

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 09:19

Yes ha ha ha... she told me to shut up. So clever of her! Really shows that women are capable of intelligent discourse and debate and don't just fall victim to their inability to control their emotions when challenged.. yay women!

OP posts:
GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 09:20

Go on, show us all how smart you are by telling me again.

OP posts:
mothertruck3r · 04/02/2020 09:25

GEEpEe, you are aware that outside London, quite a lot of BAME Brits voted for Brexit too? I don't believe you're naive enough to imagine that only white, working class people can be racist. There is racism in all communities and I have heard a lot of very nasty racism directed at Eastern European people from non-white Brits. People are tribal.

mothertruck3r · 04/02/2020 09:28

Yes ha ha ha... she told me to shut up. So clever of her! Really shows that women are capable of intelligent discourse and debate and don't just fall victim to their inability to control their emotions when challenged.. yay women!

Wow. You really showed her ShockHmm.

Noconceptofnormal · 04/02/2020 09:32

I voted leave and am appalled by this notice.

My attitude is live and let live, it doesn't bother me if people if people speak other languages, practice their religion, have supermarkets and restaurants with food from their culture. I support people's right to wear a burka or whatever garment they choose.

I believe immigration is a positive thing that fills skills shortages and labour shortages. However the one thing I do not agree with is an open door policy that is freedom of movement because I believe a country's policy on immigration should be in response to what skills/Labour the country needs.

It is perfectly possible to be tolerant and welcoming of immigrants but be anti freedom of movement. It wasn't the only reason I voted leave but was a key reason.

Racists tar groups of people with the same brush, please don't do that to those who voted leave.

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 09:39

@mothertruck3r

Yes I am aware, that's why I said

"I'd like to say it feels staged but unfortunately I've had many British people (mostly though not solely Caucasians) express xenophobic and racist views and expect I'd agree with them."

In an earlier post.

Please before you post, read. You look smarter that way..

Now you’re really fucking it up GEEpEe

Cos men are so fucking rational Grin

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 04/02/2020 09:54

I dont know whether it is just me, but I cannot make head nor tail of what the OPis trying to say. The plain English is appalling and it makes little sense

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 09:56

Basically, as a left winged voter and remainer, I've never had any group of vile bigots jump on a cause I believe in and appropriate it for themselves. I'm wondering how that feels.

OP posts:
NoMorePoliticsPlease · 04/02/2020 09:58

Having read through this thread it appears to be quite unhinged. There is a lot written by OP that I dont believe. The thread deserves no more attention

mothertruck3r · 04/02/2020 09:59

You sound like you have a real anger problem OP. Probably not good as a GP, perhaps consider having some therapy sessions to sort out this issue, dear?

You also appear to have a problem with women as well as anyone who doesn't think exactly as you do. Perhaps open your mind to other ways of experiencing the world. Not everyone has had a nice, cosy, middle-class upbringing with all the privileges that affords. Open your mind and think outside your box.
