Ive noticed this on Facebook and here. Now I can understand that when people use offensive language people need to pull them up on it. But sometimes people might miss a letter or comma or something and there is always one or several people who make a comment nothing to do with the thread about the OPs spelling or grammar! I mean you logged on to make a comment nothing to do with the thread. We have all made typos and posted things which are not grammatically accurate but some people are just out to get others as they think they have superiority. I especially like it when people are losing an arguement then really get in their with "yeh well at least I can spell properly " or something to that affect. It must be lovely to be so perfect and for my money those peole can stick their grammar where the sun don't shine. As long as a post is legible and understandable its fine., no need to be such a twonk.

Completely agree, some people can't wait to make an arse out of themself, but waiting for someone soon to post this:

It's grammar, op, not grammr

😂

Stinkycatbreath · 02/02/2020 23:45

@JoyceDivision you know I didn't wven notice that. Ahem I mean it was deliberate Smile

Yabu. It can be nearly impossible to follow a post due to the bad SPaG & lack of paragraphs.

SPaG is important.

Stinkycatbreath · 02/02/2020 23:50

There I go another one.Smile

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 02/02/2020 23:51

Well it doesn't matter how much you point it out, it probably won't help. It's just arsey.

GreenTulips · 02/02/2020 23:52

Actually I agree with you. Spelling is usually a typo, however lack of full stops makes thing difficult to read. Or worse those that ramble on, without making much sense.

Stinkycatbreath · 02/02/2020 23:53

@OlaEliza. I understand when there is a total mass of information but im talking about words that are perfectly understandable such as me mis-spelling grammar as grammr in the title.

OP posts:
DontCallUp · 02/02/2020 23:59

To that effect, not affect.

Babyg1995 · 03/02/2020 00:00

Agree I've always struggled with my spelling it's horrible as an adult to be called out for it .

DontCallUp · 03/02/2020 00:00

YABU because spelling and grammar matter.

I do notice typos and poor spelling and grammar. I can't help it, I just do. I'm always annoyed if I make them myself, but it happens Grin

I would never point out someone's errors on a thread, though, it's rude and unnecessary. Most people can manage to make themselves understood, despite mistakes.

On a thread yesterday a poster who was looking for advice wrote 'would of' instead of 'would have'. The number of people who came on just to point out her mistake rather than offer her any advice or support was astonishing. It was really quite nasty.

Ratasha · 03/02/2020 00:04

YANBU. If it's to the point that someone can't understand what a poster is trying to say, fine, but otherwise it smacks of ableism and classism. Spelling/grammar pedantry also seems to be routinely used as an ad hominem attack.

OlaEliza · 03/02/2020 00:05

Most people can make themselves understood

Many can't, and it's getting worse. Should that be ignored so save people's sensibilities?

BohoBunney · 03/02/2020 00:06

Legs not forget people could have things like dyslexia or learning difficulties making SPAG harder. A hoard of angry grammar police attacking someone for something essentially out of their control is horrible.

That said brought when it should be bought fucking KILLS me! Of course I wouldn’t correct anyone on it but I’m definitely screaming at my phone BOUGHT IS BUY BROUGHT IS BRING

BohoBunney · 03/02/2020 00:06

Let’s ffs autocorrect and proofreading are really failing us on this thread Grin

Glitterblue · 03/02/2020 00:07

I'd never point it out on here, but bad grammar does irritate me! It can also be a matter of life or death :

Let's eat, Grandma!
Let's eat Grandma!

And there's also this book:

Eats Shoots and Leaves
Eats, Shoots and Leaves

WatcherintheRye · 03/02/2020 00:08

some people are just out to get others as they think they have superiority.

You haven't been on the AIBU training course yet, have you, op?

😂 My phone plays all kinds of silly buggers when the charging cable is plugged in.

*To not so ^

WalkingDeadTrainee · 03/02/2020 00:12

English is my second language. I am catching bad SPaG habits on MNGrin
Should/would/could of. It does make me cringe. Sorry

Oulu · 03/02/2020 00:13

The converse is that it's just good manners to take reasonable steps to make your posts easy to read and understand. Some are near-incomprehensible - if you can't be bothered to try to write properly, why should you expect other people to go to extra effort to try to understand what you're saying?

Oulu · 03/02/2020 00:16

Most people on here are, or are hoping to be, parents. Our children are growing up in an educational system with major emphasis on SPAG, to the extent that getting it wrong will have adverse effects on the qualifications that they achieve. That makes it all the more important for us as parents to try to get it right, otherwise they will grow up thinking that major SPAG errors are fine. One way to help our children is to try to ensure that all social media posting is at least reasonably literate.

AmelieTaylor · 03/02/2020 00:20

YABABU

My phone has a mind of its own & somewhere between me typing, giving it a quick check and it arriving on the screen it often turns into absolute tripe!

It changes perfectly good words & SPaG into total bollocks.

It even changes negatives & positives - it’ll change wouldn’t to would. It’ll get me hung one day!!

People come on MN from many different backgrounds & levels of education. A little tolerance goes a long way!

However anyone using txt speak should be shot on sight!

fedup21 · 03/02/2020 00:24

Let's eat, Grandma!Let's eat Grandma!

Or my personal favourite, ‘I helped my Uncle Jack off a horse.’

I’ll let you imagine the other version.

Javagrey · 03/02/2020 00:28

It always annoys me when people point out grammar and spelling errors. Very petty. Most posts are perfectly understandable and errors are usually due to autocorrect.
