Streatham: isnt it awful that this is the new norm?

yolofish · 02/02/2020 17:32

Man with a knife stabs at least two people in a shop in Streatham, South London. Man shot dead by police.

Isnt it dreadful that this seems to be new norm - only 2 other people hurt, not much to see here, move along now?

Like the gun crime too - we just seem to accept it.

Makes me very sad.

It's tragic but it's not the 'norm'

Supersimkin2 · 02/02/2020 18:11

At least the stabber didn't get away with it, awful as that is to say.

But if like me you live in South London and watch the murderers of 145 children walk the streets the same way you and I do, you'd be forgiven.

So-called 'Petty' crime is out of control round here - I was mugged in broad daylight on Sunday two weeks ago - shops burgled relentlessly - professional lowlifes menace the public constantly. Doesn't feel very petty when you're left skint, frightened and hurt. On your own pavement.

Crim gangs come up here now to profit as they know they can get away with it.

Supersimkin2 · 02/02/2020 18:13

Yikes - three people stabbed, two very badly, all three in hospital now.

NewYearsRevolution2020 · 02/02/2020 18:21

@Super where were you mugged in South London? I hope you are ok.

TabbyMumz · 02/02/2020 18:28

Why do you think this is the norm?

Undies1990 · 02/02/2020 18:31

Why do you think this is the new norm? Who just seems to "accept it"?

Bezalelle · 02/02/2020 18:31

It isn't the 'norm' at all. Don't be ridiculous.

Ponoka7 · 02/02/2020 18:34

Do you mean that this is the new norm for terrorist attacks? It does seem to be. Less people get killed than attacks of a larger scale, but that isn't any comfort to the victims.

Everyday violence in our city centres is now normal. Knife and gun crime no longer shock people.

We've joked at my GC primary school that we ( parents) are going to push them to do a Martial Art for safety, but sadly, it isn't a joke.

P999 · 02/02/2020 18:35

I think when its labelled gang/ knife crime is 'the norm'. Terror ones, no.

nickEcave · 02/02/2020 18:37

This has been declared a terrorist attack. It's not surprising that this kind of terrorism would move out of central London where there's a high police presence. Fortunately the police today responded quickly and efficiently.

dudsville · 02/02/2020 18:39

When hasn't there been awful crime?

SpecLosers · 02/02/2020 18:40

Kudos to those in surveillance and anti terrorism. Unsung heroes IMO.

The response appears to have been immediate. They knew this was terrorism related due to intelligence.

I hope those stabbed will be OK.

Two or three days from now we will have moved on, hopefully NOT to the next attack.

Supersimkin2 · 02/02/2020 18:43

I am fine, thanks. Was rescued by a very goodlooking man, now that really isn't the norm.

gamerwidow · 02/02/2020 18:46

It isn’t the ‘norm’ if it was it wouldn’t even make the news let alone have wall to wall media coverage.
Terrorism attacks like this are still very very rare and shocking because of that.

SquirmOfEels · 02/02/2020 18:47

It isn't the norm.

The move from high profile location (famous/iconic/stadium) is new and concerning.

People were asked to move along for their own safety. They have been asked not to post footage of the incident because they do not want identities of specialist police officers compromised (they were dealing with a knife-wielding criminal in a suicide vest, and piled straight in, not all in the usual masks).

It's getting wall-to-wall coverage on 24 hour news channels.

I'm not sure what else would show more outrage.

But I do tend to agree that other shootings and knife crimes attract far less attention. That should not be the case. The Mayor's much vaunted knife crime initiative does not seem to have brought the intended outcomes.

We had a section 60 nearby last week following a several people injured in a slashing incident. If you are not local, I doubt you would have heard of it

Ponoka7 · 02/02/2020 18:51

@dudsville
"When hasn't there been awful crime?"

Around four years ago there wasn't the stabbings that there are now.

"Terrorism attacks like this are still very very rare"

They're around every three months, so not that rare. Apparently at least seven planned attacks were stopped over the Christmas period. These would have been dotted around the country.

ASPmum · 02/02/2020 18:56

I've just heard about this, absolutely terrible. I live in South London and often frequent streatham with my DC's so that'll be me looking over my shoulder for the foreseeable. I'm a nervous wreck at the best of times but this is very close to home.

Horrible bastard of a man. My heart goes out to the victims and their families Sad

gamerwidow · 02/02/2020 19:00

They're around every three months, so not that rare
so compared to every other form of crime very rare then.

busybarbara · 02/02/2020 19:07

And yet property prices are still through the roof and everyone wants to live in London. We don’t get this out in the shires

SunshineCake · 02/02/2020 19:09

Who is saying move along, nothing to see ? Don't be silly.

Mlou32 · 02/02/2020 19:15

I know what you mean about it being the new norm. I mean it isn't a daily occurrence however it isn't as shocking a thing as it would have been 10-15 years ago. Back then, I would have been absolutely shocked, checking out all the news stations to see what exactly had happened. Now, as horrible as it is, it simply doesn't have the shock factor that it used to.

My partner told me about it in the pub this afternoon. My response was "jesus, have many been hurt?". However it wasn't a massive shock/surprise. 10-15 years ago my response would have been sometime along the lines of 'what?? Oh my god. What happened??' Followed by searches of bbc news etc.

NameChangeNugget · 02/02/2020 19:16

It’s really not the norm

yolofish · 02/02/2020 19:18

Until about 20 years ago, I lived in Balham. When we moved there, the big 'thing' was drug dealers making retailers use their scales in the shops. There weren't very many murders though, at least not according to the South London Press (which may now be defunct, I don't know).

Shooting wasnt a thing, nor was knife crime. It just now seems that it's all kind of accepted as normal, hey it's a big city, it happens. But it shouldnt.

windycuntryside · 02/02/2020 19:21

It’s not a new norm, everyone having a mobile phone is a new norm. The media reach is so instant we hear about everything quicker and more frequently.

SpecLosers · 02/02/2020 20:39

Incidents like this finish within 24 hours. For either perpetrators or victims.

Better not to glorify by constant coverage anyway. IMV
