Should carrot cake have raisins in?

Reallybadidea · 02/02/2020 12:28

Planning to make a carrot cake to take to work tomorrow. I know some people hate raisins but the recipe I generally use has them as an ingredient. I will abide by the MN jury.

YABU = dried fruit is an abomination, leave them out.
YANBU = raisins are a welcome addition to a moist carrot cake.

No, it should be dates.

lollybee1 · 02/02/2020 19:08

Absolutely

Reallybadidea · 02/02/2020 20:03

Dates?! Shock

Dates?

No!

blondiebrowneyes · 02/02/2020 20:17

The recipe I use has them in and everyone raves about it.

blondiebrowneyes · 02/02/2020 20:20

It also has orange zest in it...it is the carrot cake of kings.

user5656 · 02/02/2020 20:27

Raisins - no
Sultanas - yes

Reallybadidea · 02/02/2020 21:08

@blondiebrowneyes can you post the recipe for the carrot cake with dates in? I might try it next time Smile

I made courgette bread once. It was not nice

Oh dear........whatever gave you the idea that it would be nice?

Go and sit on the step and think about what you have done Lordfrontpaw Grin..

Redruby25 · 02/02/2020 21:52

Ooh I wish I worked with you! 😋 Love Carrot cake. I have had one from memory with raisins in, but no generally because of all the others I have seen that the shops sell etc, they don't go in Carrot cake.

aLilNonnyMouse · 02/02/2020 21:54

Raisins are lovely and I will eat packets of them happily but I've yet to find a single baked item they improve.

Biting into my treat to find an unexpected raisin ruins it for me and I'll stop eating it.

Sexnotgender · 02/02/2020 21:56

No cake should have raisins (or worse sultanas). Revolting little cake ruiners.

longtompot · 02/02/2020 21:59

Nooooo!

buttermilkwaffles · 02/02/2020 22:00

No dates, but with ground almonds, pistachios and coconut, this looks tasty if you fancy a different take on carrot cake?

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 02/02/2020 22:28

I love dried fruit, and raisins, but never heard of them in a carrot cake before!
So I've gone YABU.

JangledBat · 02/02/2020 23:38

I'm obviously in the wrong place. If I bought a carrot cake and found it had no sultanas or some sort of curranty thing, I would chuck it in the bin!

Jellycatfox · 03/02/2020 00:44

The bin being my mouth

Catsandchardonnay · 03/02/2020 00:50

My carrot cake is legendary and much revered. It has no nuts in it despite what the recipe says (because I don’t like nuts) and I replace them with sultanas. Everyone loves it except one friend who picks out the sultanas!

Catsandchardonnay · 03/02/2020 00:51

Oh and it has orange zest and juice in it too. It’s mega-moist. Yum!

SE13Mummy · 03/02/2020 00:54

Sultanas are acceptable but not essential. I get very upset when I discover carrot cake that has been polluted by nuts. I don't like nuts anyway but find them particularly offensive in/on top of carrot cake.

Myshitisreal · 03/02/2020 00:57

No raisins 🤢 can highly recommended this recipe cakesbakesandotherbits.com/2012/05/15/carrot-pineapple-and-walnut-cake/

My favourite carrot cake is a layered cake with pureed carrots instead of shredded. It's a bit like this but I boil and puree the carrots instead of using baby food.

mathanxiety · 03/02/2020 05:16

@Myshitisreal, I suspect your recipe may well become a favourite too.

Thank you for posting it!

mathanxiety · 03/02/2020 05:17

Wrt orange zest - if anyone wants to elevate pecan pie to the level of 'Food Of The Gods', throw in some grated orange zest.
