Should carrot cake have raisins in?

Reallybadidea · 02/02/2020 12:28

Planning to make a carrot cake to take to work tomorrow. I know some people hate raisins but the recipe I generally use has them as an ingredient. I will abide by the MN jury.

YABU = dried fruit is an abomination, leave them out.
YANBU = raisins are a welcome addition to a moist carrot cake.

I quite like dried fruit but not B in a carrot cake

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 16:09

I made courgette bread once. It was not nice...

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 02/02/2020 16:17

I love raisins but I think no to them in carrot cake. In a steamed carrot pudding it would be a definite yes though.

Roominmyhouse · 02/02/2020 16:19

I love raisins and sultanas but they have no place in a carrot cake!

DramaAlpaca · 02/02/2020 16:23

Never mind raisins or sultanas, carrots have no business in a cake whatsoever.

AvocadoAdvocate · 02/02/2020 16:24

Another who likes dried fruit but it doesn't belong in a carrot cake. A cafe near us puts pineapple in their carrot cake!

jmh740 · 02/02/2020 16:30

Love raisins but not in carrot cake

JangledBat · 02/02/2020 16:33

I always use the Hairy Bikers recipe

I don't like raisins or sultanas or any dried fruit, and carrot cake is actually the only thing I will eat containing them. I much prefer it without, but generally expect it to be there.

VinceNoirsHair · 02/02/2020 16:48

No. No, no, NO. Not raisins or sultanas.

If you leave them out, those who don't like raisins will be able to eat it and those who do will still eat it regardless.

NO to dried fruit of any kind in a carrot cake; yes to walnuts or even better pecans plus cardamom and/or real vanilla, but in moderation.

Hope this does not derail the thread, but please does anyone have a recipe for a similarly moist cake to carrot cake containing - if I remember correctly -candied cherries plus angelia (so hard to find nowadays) plus ground almonds and, I think, tinned pineapple. My late mother was given this recipe many many years ago - it would have been in the 1950s, originally. I think the person who gave her the recipe called it "paradise cake" but it was very, very different from the "paradise slices" sold today. The cake was moist and yellow and moderately heavy, like a genoese or victoria sponge, dotted with bits of preserved fruit.
I think it may be given a passing mention in this recipe blog toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/hummingbird-cake-history-recipe/ but I don't think my mother's cake had bananas in it.

buttermilkwaffles · 02/02/2020 17:30

No to raisins, yes to walnuts or pecans. This is the recipe I use:
www.wildwolfsyoga.com/blog/carrot-cake-of-dreams-recipe-by-tessa-kiros/

That said, this recipe, which I keep meaning to try, as I like the sound of the almond flour and it's gluten free, does have raisins in it (if /when I do try it I will definitely be leaving them out though!).

greenlynx · 02/02/2020 17:33

I think VinceNoirsHair made a good point: without raisins both parties will enjoy it.
My concern is would this particular recipe work without raisins?
I love carrot cake and personally think it could have a little bit of sultanas for texture (definitely not raisins or pineapple) but walnuts are for decoration only.

dellacucina · 02/02/2020 17:35

I would be terribly disappointed to eat a carrot cake with no raisins. It should also contain walnuts

dellacucina · 02/02/2020 17:38

Edit to the above: I actually think sultanas are better. I just think of them as yellow raisins.

AniseedBall · 02/02/2020 17:39

Never!! YABU

AmelieTaylor · 02/02/2020 17:45

Raisins are fine, just NOT in carrot cake...

EXCEPT in special circumstances...

that there is a vocal no-raisin proponent in my department, who I don't particularly like (for non-raisin-related reasons)

at which time a couple of handful is totally acceptable! 😀

florascotia2 · 02/02/2020 17:52

thanks buttermilk very interesting

daytriptovulcan · 02/02/2020 17:53

Yes... Its tastier

redwoodmazza · 02/02/2020 18:00

I HATE spices so seldom eat carrot cake as I find it it has an overpowering taste of mixed spice or cinnamon... I would love raisins instead!

SleeperSloth · 02/02/2020 18:02

I'm another one for pineapple in my carrot cake. It's delicious!
I've also voted yes to raisins but would prefer juicier sultanas
Devastated I don't have carrot cake in!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 02/02/2020 18:31

I’ve voted YANBU but I meant for sultanas not raisins!! Carrot cake definitely needs sultanas

DBML · 02/02/2020 18:36

Carrot cake without raisins! What a scandalous thought!

What’s worse though is when people put orange in a carrot cake! What the ....!!😡 Crazy.
Or when a carrot cake is without walnuts. Ridiculous.

A moist carrot cake, full of sultanas, raisins and walnuts...and no orange in sight. Slathered in and filled with copious amounts of cream cheese frosting. Delicious.

SoftBlocks · 02/02/2020 18:39

Yes. And walnuts. Unless you don’t like them.

Jellycatfox · 02/02/2020 18:44

Raisins are bad but sultanas are a true form of evil. I believe they are dried in the pits of hell
“ A raisin and a sultana are produced from the same grape - Thompson seedless The only difference is the way they are dried. A raisin is dried naturally, but a sultana is dipped in veg oil and acid and then dried.”
