Should carrot cake have raisins in?

Planning to make a carrot cake to take to work tomorrow. I know some people hate raisins but the recipe I generally use has them as an ingredient. I will abide by the MN jury.

YABU = dried fruit is an abomination, leave them out.
YANBU = raisins are a welcome addition to a moist carrot cake.

no. it's not a dealbreaker but i wouldn't put them in myself.

Wereallsquare · 02/02/2020 14:34

No, no, no. This country would have the best desserts in the world were it not for their adulteration with dried fruit.

Boireannachlaidir · 02/02/2020 14:34

No.

Reallybadidea · 02/02/2020 14:35

Voting currently very similar to the brexit referendum...are raisin haters Brexiteers? Hmm

Sultanas yes. Raisins no.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 14:38

Can someone explain: sultanas, currents, raisins... what’s the difference (apart from currently look like wizened teddy bear eyes).

PicardsFlute · 02/02/2020 14:39

I’ve had carrot cake with chopped dates in... controversial.

greenlavender · 02/02/2020 14:40

Definitely they should.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/02/2020 14:40

I have a very nice recipe to sticky toffee apple cake that is made with dates. Mmmmmmm. Bloody lovely. Dates are the only acceptable dried fruit in cake/deserts IMHO. Sticky toffee pudding.

You gits. I’m going to have to do some baking now.

Jellycatfox · 02/02/2020 14:44

I was once served a verme brulè with raisins in it.
I am not the raisins police but they are a horrible idea unless you live somewhere where it is the only way to store fruit for the winter, or the Middle Ages Grin

mathanxiety · 02/02/2020 14:47

No way. Raisins are a nasty surprise in baked goods.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 02/02/2020 14:47

No cream cheese frosting though.

That's the best bit!

MT2017 · 02/02/2020 14:57

52/48 on the vote currently, I'm guessing that doesn't help your decision!

Nottobesoldseparately · 02/02/2020 15:04

It's passion cake when you start adding extra stuff!

Carrot cake only has carrot and walnuts in it!

AdaColeman · 02/02/2020 15:05

Yes to raisins or sultanas, but I'd plump them up by soaking in sherry or apple juice overnight, before using them.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 02/02/2020 15:06

Love carrot cake with or without the dried fruit.

You can keep the walnuts though!

Almostfifty · 02/02/2020 15:13

Hairy Bikers one is the best, it has sultanas in.

BinkyBaa · 02/02/2020 15:15

No, carrot cake is supposed to be soft and just cake textured. No chunks.

user1493494961 · 02/02/2020 15:18

Sultanas, it needs dried fruit or it will be a bit boring.

Chocolatecake12 · 02/02/2020 15:21

Sultanas and walnuts. Yes. Absolutely.

Sh05 · 02/02/2020 15:25

No raisins or sultanas in my recipe, I do put walnuts in though as well as cream cheese icing on top😋

IWantThatName · 02/02/2020 15:33

"What would Mary Berry do"?
Well I'm a bit annoyed at M.B. today, to be honest. Just tried her beetroot and chocolate cake ... and it's far too oily. I may have to ditch the entire thing :-(

Sultanas and raisins have no place in a carrot cake. Well not in my carrot cake anyhow. Walnuts are ok, although.

I'm not vegan, but came across a site (veggiedesserts or something like that) which had vegan cake recipes without 'silly' ingredients. I made their chocolate cake, lemon cake and carrot cake. My son's girlfriend told me he said to her, "Have you tried Mum's carrot cake? It's really good." Praise indeed! Grin

AdaColeman · 02/02/2020 15:39

Both Nigella and Felicity Cloake put sultanas in their carrot cake. Cake Cake Cake

JRUIN · 02/02/2020 16:05

Yes, instead of carrots. Vegetables in cake yuk!

TubbyPony · 02/02/2020 16:06

Juicy sultanas rather than hard chewy raisins for me please Wink
