Childhood dream job VS now?

Caramel78 · 02/02/2020 11:44

I always wanted to be a vet when I was a child. I work for my local council in the housing department. Did anyone fulfil their childhood dream or are they doing something very different now?

Theatre actress, did theatre in uni but afterwards needed money so straight into retail which I hated. Then bank cashier which I hated even more. Now I'm in admin, lots of spreadsheets etc but the pay is great, I can work from home and it's super flexible so will most likely stay here.

If i started again I'd like to work in event planning however I hated retail and banking mainly due to how shitty the general public can be, so maybe it's best I am where I am!

I wanted to be a dentist, I always liked going to the dentist as a child and I heard they earned lots of money (we grew up pretty poor). I'm a chartered Accountant now. Not my dream job, I kinda fell into it after school and it meant I got a really good qualification without the student debt.

I wanted to be a primary school teacher, now I’m a social worker.

tiggywinklesdepravedcousin · 04/02/2020 14:25

I wanted to be a journalist. I AM a journalist but just suffered a huge career set back. Sad However, it's a role that can be done self-employed which I did well at before so ready to hit the ground running again. Smile

Wanted to be a comic book artist/author since the age of roughly 9yo. I’m still working on it Grin at the moment I’m a SAHM to twin toddlers so inspiration is running low and time is non-existent but it’s one of those dreams I can work on at any point. I may never get anywhere with it, but I’ve got the characters, storyline and what have you pretty much figured out, just need to get it down on paper! Smile

I badly wanted to be an archaeologist in primary school. Always had a feeling I wouldn't make it as I was scared of mummies (the ancient Egyptian kind). I'm now a lawyer.

happypotamus · 04/02/2020 15:09

I knew I wanted to work in IT at the age of 9.... at the age of 38, work in Cyber Security. (Although if I won the lottery I'd jack it in and open an animal sanctuary......)

Gordonsgrin · 04/02/2020 16:00

I never really had a plan but studied archaeology, have now been an archaeologist for 30 years! One day I will work out what I want to do!

Knew a man who is now middle aged but wanted to be a mermaid when he grew up!

Wanted to be a vet, so I chose the three sciences at A level. Six weeks in, I couldn't do any of the physics assignments I'd been set. I toddled along to the staff room and told the teacher, "I'm struggling - maybe I should give up Physics."

She was SUPPOSED to say, "no, no, dear, you'll be fine, we'll have a few private tutorials."

What she ACTUALLY said was, "I think you're being very sensible, how about Geography?"

I'm now retired, but I was a scientific editor.

SciFiScream · 04/02/2020 16:44

I wanted to be a hairdresser. My dad wouldn't allow it (I was tiny). Then I wanted to join the Army. I did get my Reserve Commission.

Now I am a fundraiser. Still trying to serve the communities important to me.

I now wish I had gone after a big money career and then become a philanthropist.

lastqueenofscotland · 04/02/2020 16:45

Wanted to be a vet or a pilot
I’m a conveyancer and I’m sick of it so starting a masters later this year

anappleadaykeeps · 04/02/2020 16:50

I wanted to be a train driver or princess.

Then later I wanted to be a biochemist and find the cure for cancer.

I now just work in an energy company, in a mid level commercial manager role.

SidneyPrescott · 04/02/2020 17:10

I've always wanted to join the police.

I'm a buyer.

It's still my dream now.

firstimemamma · 04/02/2020 17:13

I dreamed of being a mummy and now I'm a sahm! Grin

motortroll · 04/02/2020 17:27

I wanted to be (and I quote from a pshe book I found) a "formula 1 driver or a secondary school geography teacher"

16 years as a geography teacher until I left in December!

mumofamenagerie · 04/02/2020 17:42

I wanted to be a farmer’s wife from the age of 5 (I was very into the Famous Five, they always stayed on farms and the farmers’ wives were plump with floury aprons from all the baking, and fed the chickens and ponies), and then an F1 driver, then an architect or an interior designer, then a vicar, then a teacher.

I do none of these things (part time training designer working from home)... BUT we are finally moving to a place with some land (a few acres). I already have chickens, dogs and rabbits and want to expand my rescue menagerie. My favourite part of the day is getting up, putting my wellies on and checking on the outside animals, followed by long dog walks, no matter the weather. I gave a chicken mouth-to-beak last week (don’t ask).

My husband will be the farmer’s husband rather than me the farmer’s wife!

Lippy1234 · 04/02/2020 17:48

I wanted to be a nun or a princess. Now I’m not currently in paid employment as I’m caring for my DM.

BellatrixLestat · 04/02/2020 17:50

I wanted to do a very highly trained. Specific job in the music industry. Which I was able to do. I worked hard. Only female I met in my 20 odd years of doing it. Loved it. It was all I dreamt of and more! I worked amazing people that others only dream of meeting

I travelled and lived all over the world.

I’m so so glad I did it.

Herringbone31 · 04/02/2020 17:57

Ive since retrained in computer science and love it!

Chelsea26 · 04/02/2020 18:06

I wanted to work in telly, I do work in telly - but I don’t do the job I thought I wanted to do. Turned out I was shit at it! Grin
