To not want to move from South to North London?

Hairyhattie · 02/02/2020 11:23

Dh and I are thinking about trying to conceive dc2 but first would like to move to a bigger home as are currently in a 1 bed flat in south London. Dh wants to go north of the river but I just feel like a traitor for even considering it Grin Grew up in South London and feel such a strong allegiance to it that the thought of lows I actually makes me upset (I know it’s stupid) but I’ll miss walking down Brixton high street listening to the man preaching in Spanish on the microphone on my way to work and sending dh out to get me a Morley’s if hung over and so many other little things.
(I know we’re incredibly fortunate to be able to buy a house anywhere, let alone in London)

Come over to our side 😂 it’s fab! I’m in Walthamstow and wouldn’t live anywhere else tbh!

I get how you feel though - if my DH suggested moving south I don’t think I’d even consider it hahaha 😂

Sausagewrole · 02/02/2020 11:31

My friend grew up in streatham. Moved to north London when she got married, Turnpike Lane area. Lasted a year, moved back to Streatham.

She just didn’t settle. Whenever I visited I thought, nice enough place, wouldn’t live here though! I’m also south London born and bred.

vampirethriller · 02/02/2020 11:31

North London is great! Ally Pally, Green lanes, Finsbury park. I love it.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 02/02/2020 11:32

I am a South Londoner too OP and I say go for it .

A change is as good as a rest so they say . Is there the option of selling up again in say 5 years if you really do not like it ?

aroundtheworldyet · 02/02/2020 11:35

Pretty much all of London is nice to live in!
But I grew up north moved west for years and never felt than ok with it. I moved back north and am much happier.

So I would probably try and find somewhere south that’s nice if I were you. Penge? Lots of people I know have moved there.

ForalltheSaints · 02/02/2020 11:37

No-one lives in south London. They reside there or exist.

You should go for it, and as others have suggested, if rejoining life becomes too much, you can sell up and move.

DinosaurDreams · 02/02/2020 11:38

I know what you mean, OP.

I’m a (north) west Londoner who has lived in proper north london for years. The thought of living south of the river makes me feel panicky! It’s such a psychological shift to move to ‘the other side’.

Won’t you get more for your money down south, though?

Trahira · 02/02/2020 11:38

North London is clearly better!

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 02/02/2020 11:39

How rude @ForalltheSaints

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 02/02/2020 11:40

Cheeky mare.

TheSandgroper · 02/02/2020 11:40

It's not just Perth (Au) then, with NOR and SOR and never the twain shall meet?

Hairyhattie · 02/02/2020 11:40

trahira To be honest the thought of telling anyone that I live in North London or giving someone a postcode staring with N makes me shudder.
Something I’ll clearly have to get over if we move

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 02/02/2020 11:42

Go north! Much nicer & far better transport.

Kilburn is good or tufnell park, i'm a big east finchley fan too.

DH tried south for one year and one year only and got sick of never being able to get on a tube at balham or Clapham south. Plus the "south circular" is not a proper main route the way the north circular is so it takes forever to get anywhere.

CommunistLegoBloc · 02/02/2020 11:43

No-one lives in south London. They reside there or exist

Fuck me and all this time I thought I was living. I'll bow down to your superior knowledge regarding my life though.

OP YANBU. There's just something about South London that can get in your bones, and I'm sure it's the same if you've always been a North Londoner but I wouldn't want to risk the transition Grin

aroundtheworldyet · 02/02/2020 11:44

Transport is shite in SL
there is that.

Froq · 02/02/2020 11:45

Why is south London so good compared to the North?

And for those in the north, why is it better than south London?

CapaldiL · 02/02/2020 11:45

Isn't south London much cheaper though?

SimonJT · 02/02/2020 11:47

Go North, you know you want to! There are some really nice places to live, great parks, great eateries, great night life and decent transport in most places.

If you don’t want an N postcode go with an E one like me, north of the river but no naughty N at the start of your postcode.

superram · 02/02/2020 11:47

If you are looking for more space move se-north London may not be cheaper. I live north of the river (just) but in the west.

SilverySurfer · 02/02/2020 11:49

Lived in North (west) London pretty much all my life and could no more move south than fly to the moon. I bet you will love it if you move north

Hairyhattie · 02/02/2020 11:49

CapaldiL used to be the way but with the gentrification and sudden trendiness of Brixton and Peckham and the likes not so much

Mummyshark2019 · 02/02/2020 11:50

North London is fab OP. Where about NL are you thinking?

Goldilookingchains · 02/02/2020 11:52

Traitor!!! Grin

pollysproggle · 02/02/2020 11:53

Fellow Brixtonian here although I live in SE23 now but my dad is still in Brixton, I absolutely love it and would live there if we could afford it. Loads of community and things to do, great night life and links to everywhere else.
My mum is north, Chalk Farm area and although it's nice I always feel a bit meh about it. It's just not the same, stay south!

Izabela86 · 02/02/2020 11:54

I lived in North, East, West and South London through my 10 years in the capital. I really liked North West area and mainly because I just knew it inside out. East was by far the worst for me. South London is like a town itself and I loved being near Clapham Common. It’s only 13 minutes to Oxford Street on the tube. But you can’t rely on the southern trains in South London. So Tube links are definitely better in North London. Although I absolutely hated Finsbury Park/Green Lanes! Im sure there are nicer areas (if money is not a concern) - Islington, Warwick Avenue, Finchley. You should go to these areas you’re considering moving to and get a feel for it! Make sure your passport is valid though Grin
