To not want to move from South to North London?

Hairyhattie · 02/02/2020 11:23

Dh and I are thinking about trying to conceive dc2 but first would like to move to a bigger home as are currently in a 1 bed flat in south London. Dh wants to go north of the river but I just feel like a traitor for even considering it Grin Grew up in South London and feel such a strong allegiance to it that the thought of lows I actually makes me upset (I know it’s stupid) but I’ll miss walking down Brixton high street listening to the man preaching in Spanish on the microphone on my way to work and sending dh out to get me a Morley’s if hung over and so many other little things.
(I know we’re incredibly fortunate to be able to buy a house anywhere, let alone in London)

I detest London and refuse to enter it at all. Give me the country any time.

Hairyhattie · 02/02/2020 11:55

We’ve been looking at Finchley and Archway

@Froq I don't know what to tell you south London is just the best lol

Hairyhattie · 02/02/2020 11:55

madcatladyforever keep it all! We don’t want it!!

PumpkinP · 02/02/2020 11:56

Gosh it’s normally the other way round with no one wanting to move to south Confused

OhamIreally · 02/02/2020 11:58

Friend of mine lived around Blackheath for years and loved it. Her new husband really wanted to move North so she reluctantly agreed and they moved to Archway. She loves it now - says she feels like she lives in "proper London".

HappyHammy · 02/02/2020 11:58

Could you just buy a house where you are. Brixton is great for transport. Finchley is very expensive. Or maybe move even further South.

tallah · 02/02/2020 11:58

God don't go to archway! If you're moving north there are some lovely places! Archway isn't one of them. Finchley is really really boring and 90% Jewish (if that makes any difference to you) not offensive just a fact before anyone starts. Crouch end and Muswell Hill are lovely.

TheFaerieQueene · 02/02/2020 11:59

North side all the way here! 😁

PumpkinP · 02/02/2020 11:59

I’m in south London and I would love to move to north or west. But then I live in a not nice area of south. My ex (who is from west london) always use to take the piss out of where I live Hmm

ItFigures · 02/02/2020 12:00

Where in North are you thinking OP? I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Tufnell Park, Archway and Camden. The latter I really liked but really disliked T-Park and Archway, just not enough going on and really disliked Holloway.

Have you thought about East London? Had a bad rep for years but it’s becoming quite gentrified and very welcoming. London Fields is lovely.

Sharkyfan · 02/02/2020 12:02

If you’ve got a good network of friends in the south it could be a pain for them to visit you.

LonginesPrime · 02/02/2020 12:06

There's just something about South London that can get in your bones, and I'm sure it's the same if you've always been a North Londoner

Yes, it absolutely is the same!

For me, at least.

Noodlenosefraggle · 02/02/2020 12:07

I was born in south London and lived there until I was 25. There used to be a bus that went from Catford to Southgate and I remember my friend and I used to say we were going to sit on it all the way just so we could see what North London was like Grin
Then I moved there and lived there when I got a job and North London born boyfriend for the next 20 years. It's much nicer and the North Circular is actually a single road, as opposed to the South Circular so you can get around. When I visit my parents (who admittedly live in Mitcham which is a bit of a dump) it's a stark contrast. However, if you're looking for cheaper, bigger houses, north isn't the place to be!

Esspee · 02/02/2020 12:11

In my home city it used to be said that the people would be more likely to emigrate than move to the other side of the river. (I emigrated but eventually returned home - to my side of the river 😁)

QueenOfToast · 02/02/2020 12:13

YABU because North London is infinitely better!

However, I (sort of) understand how you feel because I would never want to live in South London.

FrogsFrogs · 02/02/2020 12:19

I'm NW London and love it here. Definitely goes both ways. I lived South for a bit and couldn't get the hang of it at all, it feels totally different.

I went to school in Finchley and managed perfectly well with life despite Jewish people Confused Shock WTF was that comment about

Becca8675309 · 02/02/2020 12:22

Here's my house in Blackheath, SE3. It's on the Heath, minutes from Greenwich Park, surrounded by outstanding private and state schools, and the very pretty village. Where I once heard a kid say "Look Mummy! There's a Farrow & Ball shop just like ours!" Does it really look that bad?

To not want to move from South to North London?
DaveGrohlsMuse · 02/02/2020 12:23

You should consider moving to somewhere like Walthamstow as you'd get way more for your money than in Archway / Finchley. It's a cool place now.

FrogsFrogs · 02/02/2020 12:24

'Finchley is really really boring and 90% Jewish (if that makes any difference to you) not offensive just a fact before anyone starts'.

'According to the 2011 UK Census in Finchley Church End ward, 67% of the population was White (47% British, 18% Other, 2% Irish), 8% Indian and 6% Other Asian. The largest religion was Judaism, claimed by 31% of the population, whereas Christians made up 28%.[14] West Finchley ward was 61% White (40% British, 18% Other, 3% Irish), 13% Indian and 8% Other Asian.'

Not a fact, so feel comfortable saying WTF at that post.

DaveGrohlsMuse · 02/02/2020 12:26

For those suggesting Muswell Hill / Crouch End, I cant imagine them being better value for money than Brixton for property, lovely as they are. Shite transport links too.

FrogsFrogs · 02/02/2020 12:26

Agree transport is shite there.
And it's not to everybody's taste.

CSIblonde · 02/02/2020 12:26

I've moved from East to North. It's much nicer. Been South a few times, but thought it was a bit grim tbh.

DinosaurDreams · 02/02/2020 12:27

Why does your husband want to move to north London, OP?

Cherrysoup · 02/02/2020 12:29

I moved from Streatham to Barnet and never regretted it. The further north you go, the better the value for money. If you currently commute into central London, consider as far north as you can! I hated the travel from Streatham to the north of London, the south circular, one bloody lane! 🤬
