To not want to move from South to North London?

Dh and I are thinking about trying to conceive dc2 but first would like to move to a bigger home as are currently in a 1 bed flat in south London. Dh wants to go north of the river but I just feel like a traitor for even considering it Grin Grew up in South London and feel such a strong allegiance to it that the thought of lows I actually makes me upset (I know it’s stupid) but I’ll miss walking down Brixton high street listening to the man preaching in Spanish on the microphone on my way to work and sending dh out to get me a Morley’s if hung over and so many other little things.
(I know we’re incredibly fortunate to be able to buy a house anywhere, let alone in London)

Frankly despised living in London, both sides of the river. 😳

Given the choice of leaving London and living south I’d take south any day (had to think it through for a moment mind you). Smile

I'm surprised that it isn't cheaper to stay in South London unless you're moving to the outskirts of North London?

I live in SE London although lived in SW9 when I first moved to London. I'm not sure I'd suit North.

SW London transport links are great - I live 5-10 minutes away from the tram and 2 different tube lines as well as the overground.

Come to Telegraph Hill! We are close to Queens Road Peckham, New Cross Gate and Nunhead stations. AND then there is the Bakerloo extension (that may never actually happen but it is nice to believe it might although transport links are actually very very good).

Peckham has gentrified so much that all the independent shops are being kicked out so only big chains can afford to rent there. Plus houses are f expensive in the "village". Nunhead is nice though. I'd happily live there. Don't go too far South East though.

I’ve lived in both. I loved Clapham, it’s very yummy mummy but couldn’t afford to buy there. Whetstone and Barnet are more surburban but none of its cheap. Depends what your budget is.

Stay south! But south west. Can't deal with the SE transport probs

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2020 12:22

My friend was brought up
In NW3 and hasn't lived there for 30 years. He's still very much a north Londoner!

I reluctantly shifted from South to North. But now I love it. Transport is soooo much better. Parks are good. Easier into lots of places etc.

GobletOfIre · 04/02/2020 12:26

I’ve lived in both and prefer north for the better transport links. If you’re after more property for your money, you might be better off moving further south. Otherwise go east.

For me the three key factors were: (1) the commutes to work, (2) school catchments (primary and secondary) and (3) housing space/costs. Preferences about areas came below those. We moved from south London out of London entirely because of (2) and (3). (1) is worse where we are now in terms of time and cost, but better on experience, eg because we walk more and get a seat on trains.

You say DH wants a faster/better commute to his work, which seems fair enough, if he’s likely to remain with that employer/in that location long term . Do you also / will you be WoH?

I would have thought that house prices were lower south of the river except in some of the posher places in the south west like Richmond (and in the south east like Chislehurst).

As for public transport, the tube is better north of the river, but that's all. I prefer overground trains, so the tube isn't a draw for me.

I don't know north London at all, I can count on one hand the number of times I've been (other than central London) so I can't comment on possible areas to live.

Have you looked further out of north London eg around St Albans (maybe not St A itself as it's really pricey though maybe not so bad as London).

Which part though? The Village area is lovely.

Nowhere near the village...
