Yes of course you can, you can type whatever you like. Nobody is forcing you to use the abbreviations. If you don't like them don't use them

HRA1971 · 02/02/2020 17:56

Hi my point is I don't know what they mean so get a bit confussed when looking at posts.

Gosh 75% thought I was unreasonable to ask the question - dispite being new here. well 75% are RNBF.

Hsldl · 02/02/2020 18:02

Someone has linked what the abbreviations are. Read it. Problem solved.

HRA1971 · 02/02/2020 18:08

Thank you for the link. Maybe im just of an age where direct speak was part of my growing up and avoids unnecessary misunderstandings.

There’s a Gransnet if you prefer 🤷🏻‍♀️

The acronyms have been used on the internet since its inception & they’re not unique to Mumsnet

There’s nothing unfriendly about disagreeing with you POV

slashlover · 02/02/2020 18:23

Probably because it's asked CONSTANTLY. Here's a thread which was started on Tuesday where the last post was the day before you made yours.

I'm probably your age or older.

I have no problems with it

Nanny0gg · 02/02/2020 18:27

BTW, (by the way), although this might sound a tad snippy, when I was new to Usenet (forerunner of these types of forums), it was made very clear to me that as a newbie, I was best advised to watch and learn before suggesting the established systems change.

ilovesooty · 02/02/2020 18:29

I also would think that when you enter any new environment, online or in real life, you take the time to do a bit of research and learning.

thecatneuterer · 02/02/2020 18:29

I loathe them and never use them (except for Ddog and Dcat which tickle me). You do get used to them though most of the time, but there does seem to be confusion with DF (father/friend) DN (niece/nephew) and DS (which is sometimes used for sister instead of son). I still think it's much easier to use the proper word.

B0bbin · 02/02/2020 18:30

I agree that the abbreviations are annoying, but you do get used to them. Cake welcome! X

lazylinguist · 02/02/2020 18:31

Every single other person on MN was new at some point and presumably managed to work out the (not very difficult) acronyms or look at the link that explains them. Is there some reason you're unable to do that? It's not rocket science.

lazylinguist · 02/02/2020 18:32

Maybe im just of an age where direct speak was part of my growing up and avoids unnecessary misunderstandings.

There are people of all ages on MN, many of them probably much older than you.

Halloweenbabyy · 02/02/2020 18:39

Rnbf?

recklessruby · 02/02/2020 19:03

Really not being fair?

ratspeaker · 02/02/2020 19:03

What @Nanny0gg said

Oh usenet! It seemed so modern at the time; long discussions about Babylon 5 is what I remember most.

HRA1971 · 02/02/2020 20:29

ok ok guys some of you are now being rude and insulting so im leaving this thread. thank you to those that had the decency to help me. And the others - well take time to realise that not everyone is as quick as you - hence the point of some of the advise being asked here.

OP posts:
ratspeaker · 03/02/2020 09:59

If you click on the down arrow next to the (unhighlighted) " talk" you can click customise, at the bottom of the list there is an acronym translator bit. Never tried it but it may help you if you have difficulty understanding the site customs

MovingBriskyOn · 03/02/2020 10:08

Oooo. We've got a flouncer!

OP, you might find the chat section more friendly than AIBU, which can be quite harsh

Oysterbabe · 03/02/2020 10:10

You can say whatever you like, no one will stop you.

PityParty4one · 03/02/2020 10:15

Flouncers

Yes. It is also basic common sense.

Your first mistake was announcing you were a NMer Grin
