To think there is something really wrong with Dd's tummy?

Apologies in Advance for the grammar \typos posting from a phone with broken screen!

Dd is 9. Last Sunday night she was in tears with bad tummy. Monday I booked an appt first thing with Gp, she then said she felt absolutely fine, so I called back and cancelled. Obviously she almost immediately said it was really painful.

So took her to pharmacist who said she could try gaviscon and some sort off wind tablets as she thought it wAs trapped wind causing the symptoms. Didn't really do anything tbh and she still hurt Tuesday so she stayed home a second day. Intermittent pain but less than Monday.

Wednesday she went to school but they called me to collect her after lunch when the pain came back. I got a doc appointment for the evening. Doctor said it was reflux, eat more yogurt. Come back in a week if not any better.

Thursday and Friday intermittent pain.

Today she felt terrible so 111 organised an out off hours appt with a practice nurse. She said it felt like dd had constipation and could feel it in her stomach. Gave us movicol. Said it could take a couple days.

She has had four sachets today and still in pain. But she has been for two poos. She was pretty hysterical just now when I tried to get her to sleep. She's just laying next to me in pain.

It feels like one side under her rib is puffier than other side

Symptoms to date have been

Nausea
Acid reflux
Bloat
Tiny bit of blood in poo
Green poo twice (I haven't seen it, her description)
head ache
Churning tummy
Pain all over stomach to the touch and inside

She hasn't had fever

Three HCPs and three different ideas for what is wrong. HmmSad

Thoughts?

I Was a Paeds Nurse for 38 yrs, recently retired. Take her to A & E , ask for an ultrasound scan & blood tests. She needs diagnosing properly. I am sure she will be fine OP but it could be any number of things and it could be nothing. Better to be safe than sorry . Good luck m'dear Flowers

Hope all is ok op

quince2figs · 01/02/2020 23:23

Agree with above post - I’m a doctor. She has classic child appendicitis symptoms.
Could be any number of more minor things, but I’m afraid you have had poor advice from GP and practice nurse so far. They don’t seem to have realised that acute constipation is symptom, not a condition.
Please STOP giving laxatives as this could cause a ruptured appendix. Please take her to A&E now - she needs bloods, an abdominal X-ray, and to see the surgical team. Hope she is ok.

VestaTilley · 01/02/2020 23:26

Appendicitis? Endometriosis? Coeliac disease?

Kittypillar · 02/02/2020 00:12

Not to scare you OP but this does sound very similar to when I had appendicitis as a teenager. Even the pain coming & going thing - so much so that when my stepdad took me to out of hours on a Sunday afternoon with it, he messaged my mum as we went in to see the doctor saying that we'd be back home in half an hour and he was convinced it wouldn't be anything serious! He then sheepishly followed up less than 10 minutes later saying I was being sent to hospital with suspected appendicitis and I was in surgery by dinner time.

And constipation (or at least what very much felt like it at the time) was definitely a massive symptom for me when it all started to kick off.

As with the above advice, please take her to A&E if you haven't already. It could be any number of things but it's far better to be safe than sorry in this situation. Really hope she feels better soon Flowers

ChewChewIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/02/2020 07:21

I would take her to a&E personally. Hope she's ok.

Good morning everyone thank you for the handhold overnight, it was really appreciated. DD finally fell asleep last night and I wasn't keen to wake her and drag her to A&E as I've done the Saturday night wait there before and it's really not very nice. And full of drunks/fighters etc. We are only half a mile away from the hospital as well so I could have her there in minutes in an emergency which influenced my decision. I'd have definitely taken her in if we were any further! She slept with me as well just in case we needed to rush off.

DD is still complaining of tummy pain today but it's a mild "My tummy hurts" pain every so often. Not, "It huuuuurts! constant complaining iyswim. I rang 111 to see if there was a chance of an out of hours appt and they said she should be seen within 24 hours then called back and said they're too busy today (they've got their Coronavirus message all set up so it might be people worrying about that) and to take her to GP then.

SO we are just going to keep watchful and if it pain seems to increase at all I will take her straight to A&E.

My son could hop fine and he had appendicitis. I would really really strongly recommend going to A&E and would totally agree with the doctor who posted above - your DD needs bloods, a scan and a review by the paediatric team. If you leave it til the pain gets worse, it might be more serious and be harder and take longer to treat. Sometimes serious conditions don’t look that bad from the outside until suddenly it all kicks off and then time is of the essence.

A locum gp also said my son didn’t have obvious signs of appendicitis, 24 hours before he was operated on. Go - it’s not the various medical staff that you’ve already seen, that will have to deal with the aftermath of weeks in hospital and time off work / school for recovery.

Ds was admitted straight from GP with similar symptoms that then got to the stage he couldn't bear me to touch him. GP suspected appendicitis, after 8 hours on ward, he was found to have a massive impaction, his temperature was 40, they gave him an enema, whilst waiting for it to work he was violently sick, wet himself & then I have never seen so much poo come out of a child, it didn't stop for over an hour & he couldn't stop weeing. The blockage had stopped his bladder from emptying, within 20 minutes his temperature had returned to normal, he was discharged but the pooh continued for 24 hours, every hour. Take her to A & E if the pain builds up again, take plenty of spare clothes with you & if they diagnose an impaction, get some incontinence pull ups or large size kids ones because there will be a lot to come out, ds had been going to the toilet, it was green & slimy but this was what had managed to slide down the sides of the blockage & the slime was from his bowel becoming inflamed from being blocked.

TurtleTop · 02/02/2020 13:34

At A&E with dd who seems about 80% better now that we are here. Hmm Oh well. Hopefully they'll tell me I'm being paranoid and send me on my way

The Movicol and school is doable. We had this two years ago. Almost identical symptoms. Turns out it had been triggered by drinking drinks with aspartame etc in. Took 6 months to get DS back to normal.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 02/02/2020 13:39

I get awful stomachache after using OVEX

Pumpkintopf · 02/02/2020 14:16

Hope all is ok op.

ArchieStar · 02/02/2020 14:30

Hope all is OK OP and a diagnosis is made.

Supertrooper98 · 02/02/2020 15:05

Let us know how you get on OP

TurtleTop · 02/02/2020 15:16

Urine test was normal, waiting to hear about blood (though I'm not actually sure what they're checking it for) Hmm

Doc is lovely and said it is really unlikely to be appendicitis but that it can present in weird ways so open minded. She said tbh she's not really sure, which I prefer to a random guess tbf

OP posts:
Pumpkintopf · 02/02/2020 17:11

Positive that at least they are doing a thorough work up and hopefully can rule out appendicitis.

TurtleTop · 02/02/2020 19:15

Bloods were fine Confused She said it could be an IBS\intolerance situation but it will hopefully rectify itself and if not we should see the Gp.

Thanks again to anyone who posted. X

Green poo can result from eating coloured yoghurt, usually blue.
I hope she feels better.

Mascarponeandwine · 02/02/2020 20:34

Bloods I think they test for inflammation levels which are high if you have appendicitis. So glad you went in, and hope it settles for her now.

Isadora2007 · 02/02/2020 20:43

I’m
Glad appendicitis has been ruled out. I’d blame the Ovex myself- it made my wee grandson poorly for a few weeks.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/02/2020 22:52

Glad it wasn’t her appendix. Better to err on side of caution as it can go fast in children.
I guess if it’s an intolerance a food diary is next step to find out what causes flare ups of pain and constipation/wind.

Pumpkintopf · 02/02/2020 23:24

Good that you got the tests to rule out the appendicitis. Hope things improve soon.

Supertrooper98 · 03/02/2020 06:36

Good result. Maybe it will settle. Thanks for letting us know

Yeahnah2020 · 03/02/2020 06:42

Seems odd that every time you go to take her to the Drs or A &E she improves. Maybe it’s anxiety related.
