To take Morning after pill or not

Name changed because I am horrifically embarrassed that I am in this position, and posting here for traffic so pls forgive .

Had sex Thursday afternoon , condom broke and DH pulled out as soon as noticed. He didn’t “cum” inside me , ejaculated a few strokes of his hand later on my stomach. I didn’t think much of it till today I checked my app and realised I’m due to ovulate today, and then I thought of Precum . I ended up talking to my two best friends over lunch about it today because thanks to my OCD it’s nagging away at me and I had popped to boots and got the 72 hour after pill (the pharmacist said my chances were very low but better safe than sorry)

Friend T insisted there is nothing to worry about as he went to “piss” before, and chances are low, (I’m cringing writing this so I do apologise) . Where as Friend N said morning after pills increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy and filled my head so much with it that I’m now sat here with the pill , my OCD raging and I don’t know what to do ...
I for mental heath reasons can not get pregnant, it’s not even something I can think about , but my brain is absolutely spinning so for gods sake can someone sensible please talk some sense to me .

OP posts:

The MAP isn’t useless after ovulation, it also works by making it harder for any fertilised egg to implant.
Take the pill. And but your mates a book on biology if they really think pissing gets rid of sperm!
I hope you’re ok xx

OvenGlovesWillTearUsApart · 02/02/2020 01:53

Did you take the MAP? Sensible thing to do.

Would you consider getting a Mirena coil? I’m on my second one. It behaves itself and I don’t get periods! That combined with condoms would be a reasonable belt-and-braces approach to preventing pregnancy.

Ectopic Pregnancy and Emergency Contraceptive Pills: A Systematic Review

Kelly Cleland, MPA MPH, Elizabeth Raymond, MD MPH, [...], and Haoping Zhu, MD

Additional article information

Abstract

Objective

To evaluate the existing data to estimate the rate of ectopic pregnancy among emergency contraceptive pill treatment failures.

Data Sources

Our initial reference list was generated from a 2008 Cochrane review of emergency contraception. In August 2009, we searched Biosys Previews, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Medline, Global Health Database, Health Source: Popline, and Wanfang Data (a Chinese database).

Methods of Study Selection

This study included data from 136 studies which followed a defined population of women treated one time with emergency contraceptive pills (either mifepristone or levonorgestrel), and in which the number and location of pregnancies were ascertained.

Results

Data from each article were abstracted independently by two reviewers. In the studies of mifepristone, 3 out of 494 (0.6%) pregnancies were ectopic; in the levonorgestrel studies, 3 out of 307 (1%) were ectopic.

Conclusion

The rate of ectopic pregnancy when treatment with emergency contraceptive pills fails does not exceed the rate observed in the general population. Since emergency contraceptive pills are effective in lowering the risk of pregnancy, their use should reduce the chance that an act of intercourse will result in ectopic pregnancy

@feeona123 it SOMETIMES doesn’t work after ovulation, but it’s incorrect and fairly dangerous information to say it never works after ovulation.

GaaaaarlicBread · 02/02/2020 02:12

Hey OP I hope you’re ok and your anxiety has settled about the pill . Just thought I’d pop by and recommend the Mirena coil if you haven’t tried it ? It’s very effective and I had it for years before having it removed to try for a child , mums had it for 20 (had it replaced obviously), never had any issues and saves situations like these where your OCD will be through the roof . Hugs x

DimplesToadfoot · 02/02/2020 04:34

Those of you that have had the coil fitted, do the wires not drive you mad? Every time I went to the loo when I wiped I nearly pulled the damn thing out, it would get caught on my knicker elastic, we couldn't have sex for fear of cheese wiring off his penis, I worked with horses but if the end of the wire was pointing in the wrong direction I'd stab myself multiple times, I gave up after a week and had to go back and have it taken out, I could never recommend the coil to anyone, how you all cope with it beats me

FrockFrockFrockityFrock · 02/02/2020 05:03

Watching so I can see the answer to the above. SO did not know that was possible.

sashh · 02/02/2020 05:18

Take the pill.

Step away from google.

sunshinekids · 02/02/2020 05:30

@DimplesToadfoot

Did the person who inserted you coil not trim the wires? When I had one the strings were nowhere near my underwear (DH couldn't feel them) and soft.

StarlightLady · 02/02/2020 05:31

Take it!

Bluerussian · 02/02/2020 05:44

Take it if you want to to reassure, almost certainly you are not pregnant. Definitely too much info in your first post, we really did not need to know all that about your husband & he would be horrified if he knew what you'd said.

curiousierandcouriser · 02/02/2020 05:45

As another precaution - would your DH be willing to have a vasectomy?

DimplesToadfoot · 02/02/2020 12:51

@sunshinekids I had a foot long piece of wire hanging out my foof! They were supposed to cut them?

Skysblue · 02/02/2020 13:57

Your friend is mad. The man using the toilet has nothing to do with sperm! Morning after pill does not increase chance of ectopic. Seriously your friend is mad.

The chance of you getting pregnant is low but real. Precum, plus sperm can linger for days. (I actually got pregnant by having sex 6 days before ovulation, we were ‘trying’ but DH was away around ovulation, happily sperm managed to hang on in there 🤷‍♀️)

Anyway if you are content to accept a small risk of pregnancy, don’t take the pill, if you definitely don’t want to get pregnant, then take the pill.

Obviously.

PotholeParadise · 02/02/2020 14:02

DimplesToadfoot

WTF? Shock
Did the work-experience kid fit it? Who removed it? How come they didn't hit the roof when they saw the strings hadn't been cut?

OvenGlovesWillTearUsApart · 02/02/2020 14:07

DimplesToadfoot

The wires were actually dangling out of your fanny??? Jesus, what kind of idiot inserted it, and then removed it without realising they just needed trimming?

Mine are very neat. They kind of curl around my cervix (have felt it with the top of my finger), so well tucked away from fanny entrance, but can easily be reached with the right equipment for removal.

Fatasfooook · 02/02/2020 14:13

Take the pill and send your dh for the snip

jitterbug5 · 02/02/2020 14:49

@DimplesToadfoot what?! Shock I've got the coil now (having it removed on Tuesday due to weight gain however) and I certainly do not have any wires hanging anywhere!!! I can just about feel them if I really try (to check it's still in place) but it's near my cervix!! Did they not say anything when it was removed?!?!? They should have trimmed them!!

Supertrooper98 · 02/02/2020 15:21

Actually yes why doesn't your husband get the snip?

SophieGiroux · 02/02/2020 15:25

Get Ella One which is a morning after pill that can be taken five days after unprotected sex. It's more effective than the original one.

sunshinekids · 02/02/2020 17:45

@DimplesToadfoot

That's so odd, I didn't think they were even that long before they were trimmed. Sorry you had such a bad experience.

DimplesToadfoot · 02/02/2020 17:48

@PotholeParadise
@jitterbug5
@OvenGlovesWillTearUsApart

I swear I had 2 pieces of wire hanging out maybe not 12 inches but certainly no less than 6. The person that removed it was the same person that put it in, she asked why so soon and said well the coil wasn't for everyone and took it out.

I've always thought that was how it was meant to be. Kind of like a tampon string for when it came to removing, and I've always had this admiration for women that use the coil and puzzlement as for why you would put up with it .. I feel so stupid now lol

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2020 17:58

Theoretically, a man who urinates before sex is less likely to have sperm in his pre ejaculatory fluid as it flushes out sperm remaining from any previous ejaculation. Only applies if having sex more than once in a short period and is only really theoretical. It is recommended if you rely on withdrawal for contraception. So the friend wasn't utterly barking. Not really helpful or the basis for this decision.

ShowOfHands · 02/02/2020 17:59

Oh and my coil wires were too long by about 2 inches and they hurt DH. I had them trimmed!

Grumpasaurus · 02/02/2020 18:05

Op,

I work in sexual health, and I can tell you that most of the advice you have been given is bollocks.

First question- have you taken the pill?

Regardless, the chances of pregnancy this way are minuscule, though not impossible. That said, the pill is more effective, the earlier you take it, so if you waited a while, its efficacy is reduced. It is less likely to work after ovulation.

I would encourage you to, tomorrow, go to a clinic and get the COPPER COIL fitted. The copper coil is non-hormonal and will therefore not cause hormonal side effects. that said, it can make your periods slightly heavier and more painful, so if you already suffer from bad periods this might not be for you.

The added benefit of the copper coil is that it acts as effective emergency contraception for five full days after unprotected sex- and it is just as effective on day 5 as on day 1.

Hope this helps.
