Sausages

Catching up on Best Home Cook. People eat sausages every week, apparently. I mean, we bloody love a good bangers and mash, toad in the hole, sausage casserole, etc. We have them a couple of times a month at most. But every week?
This has caused much debate here (mainly from our youngest who would eat them every day if he could). Are we missing out on our weekly sausage fix?
YABU - occasional treat
YANBU - weekly banger-fest

@drownininplaymobil
Marmalade and sweet potatoes, what's that pls?

I have an incredible butcher near me that makes the best selection of gourmet sausages.
We have them a couple of times a month but during BBQ season we have to limit them. Simply too delicious and I am a huge fish person but a specialist sausage is fab. These include steak, lamb and duck meat sausages.

BigFatLiar · 31/01/2020 21:18

Love sausages. Usually have low fat sausages but must admit that a couple of basic cheap sausages cooked and split and put on a sandwich/roll with a fried egg and brown sauce is a treat.

mrsm43s · 31/01/2020 21:22

Well in January we had

  • chicken and chorizo casserole
  • jambalaya using 4 chopped up spicy sausages in place of chorizo (because they'd been in the freezer for a while)
- IKEA hotdogs as a fill-me-up after braving IKEA - a packet of salami in sandwiches.

So 4 x sausages in a month = pretty much once a week. I'm not much of a fan of standard pork sausages, and would have said we ate less sausages than most families, so I reckon once a week for an average family is quite believable.

I had a form when my eldest started infants from the health visitor, there was various questions about diet etc my favourite was asking how many times a week they have sausages!!!

I asked if it made a difference in quality, type of meat etc etc.

Weenurse · 31/01/2020 21:26

Our local butcher has won awards for their sausages.
We did a tasting platter and decided we liked the chicken ones the best.
Our DC do not like sausages so we only have them very occasionally.

GrumpyHoonMain · 31/01/2020 21:28

Depends how they are made. If I made my own with proper meat then I would eat them every week.

FrenchBoule · 31/01/2020 21:35

Occasional treat. Butcher sausages and come in so many flavours!
@billy1966 I was wondering if you’re nearby, could meet up at the butcher’s? ;)

TrainspottingWelsh · 31/01/2020 21:44

At least once a week. Either in a meal or weekend breakfast/ lunch. From local farms/ butcher or Linda McCartney. I'd happily include cheap supermarket sausages if it wasn't for the welfare issues. How healthy, artisan or the meat content doesn't really bother me.

WhatKatyDidNot · 31/01/2020 22:22

Probably three times a month? But they are "naice" butcher's sausages.

LemonPrism · 01/02/2020 06:35

I'm vegan but when I wasn't we had sausage pasta a lot

Sirzy · 01/02/2020 06:38

Ds has them every morning for his breakfast so we always have butchers sausage in the fridge. I will generally have them at least once a week in some form or another

midsummabreak · 01/02/2020 06:53

I get requests for curried sausages from my teens so tend to have them weekly

AmazingGreats · 01/02/2020 07:29

They are on my weekly shopping list, yes. My toddler would happily eat them for every meal.

worriedmama16 · 01/02/2020 07:33

I like sausages, get them from my butcher, the only meat I get from there.
Really good quality, I like them cold dipped in hummus, also with mash gravy and roasted carrots and parsnips, delicious!

AnnaMariaDreams · 01/02/2020 07:36

DS is a very picky eater. He has them weekly- but quite often he has heck chicken sausages not pork.
DH and I have them maybe once a month, usually a family meal of toad in the hole.

MsChatterbox · 01/02/2020 07:48

I love sausages. I get beef sausages. A pack of 8 will go for 2 meals between myself, husband and toddler. So if I buy a pack I will plan two meals in a week with them. Probably buy a pack every 2-3 weeks.

Newmetoday · 01/02/2020 07:52

I’m shocked that you’re shocked that some people eat them every week. I always have sausages on a Sunday for breakfast. I look forward to them.

PooWillyBumBum · 01/02/2020 08:45

We don’t eat meat but we have veggie sausages once a week as a treat.

Floribundance · 01/02/2020 08:51

Linda McCartney ones once a week and tofu dogs every month or so. When I ate meat, maybe twice a year?

Mistletorpor · 01/02/2020 09:22

@Newmetoday not shocked, just surprised when the presenters said that most people eat them every week. Kids immediately asked why we don’t have them every week, but at a near 50/50 split, I don’t think we’re unusual.

Every other week and I try various sorts. From cheapo Richmond up to the venison ones at my local butcher. I find the really expensive ones with little fat in less tasty.

billy1966 · 01/02/2020 14:17

We have them for lunch.
A huge pan of slowly carmelised onions, with a little mustard and French baguette.

Delicious. My gang would happily have that every Saturday for brunch if they got it.

HundredsAndThousandsOfThem · 01/02/2020 14:23

I think it depends though. Sausages I would definitely consider a treat as the vast majority of them aren't healthy (even good quality butchers chicken sausages are surely quite full of saturated fat) so I don't have them once a week. That said I do have other treats about once a week. Also if you're having chorizo etc as part of a large meal you won't actually be getting that much in each portion compared to having bangers and mash.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/02/2020 14:25

Most weeks, but not every week. Probably 3-4 times a month. They appear a couple of times a month on school dinners too.

OhTheRoses · 01/02/2020 14:27

Wouldn't care if i never saw another sausage. Have them cpl of times a year.
