stair lift / aid

Just wondered if anyone had a similar situation.

Youngest child has a disability that limits his mobility (he's 9) and also has significant learning disability (developmental age of a two year old and non verbal).

He has been assessed by OT, but doesn't qualify for a stair lift as he is physically capable of getting up and down stairs (with me supporting him) as in he climbs up on all fours (toddler style) with me behind him for safety, and comes down sitting on his bottom, one stair at a time with me in front of him.
Although he is capable of this, he has days when he simply refuses to go up or down the stairs (usually as a protest when he doesn't want to go to bed or in the morning when he is reluctant to get ready for school).

At these times I have no choice but to carry him.
He is 9 years old (but the size of an average 7 year old) and it is really taking its toll on my back now. I'm in so much pain.

Are there any aids or equipment that may help or any ideas of where I can go with this?
He is physically capable so I doubt there is anything, but it's really getting me down.

Ask your doctor, OP, when you go in to consult them about back pain?
