Tonsillitis in pregnancy

Hi ,
I’m almost 10 weeks pregnant and woke up today with a sudden, extremely sore throat, including my tongue , swollen glands and an awful dry type cough. No white spots on my tonsils though .
It’s agony to swallow , i could hardly eat. I soldiered on through work today on paracetamol and due to having another medical condition I’m limited to what throat sweets I can take . I’m beginning to feel like it could potentially be turning into tonsillitis as I’ve had that twice and felt similar . I have a headache and I’m tired , not got a fever though .
The dr couldn’t see me today and I have to call back tomorrow , issue is I’m at work so will only be able to get to an evening appointment if they have any. Is it dangerous to leave potential tonsillitis when pregnant for a day or so? It’s my first pregnancy so this is all very new and I don’t want to cause any harm . It may sound like a silly question but I just need a bit of advise or guidance i guess. Thank you

Could you ring 111 and see if you can get a OOH appointment or go to your nearest walk in centre?

GaaaaarlicBread · 30/01/2020 17:44

@GoldLeafTree I could do , I don’t drive so it makes it a bit difficult but I could get a taxi . Do you think it’s necessary? I don’t want to waste their time you see

I had tonsillitis when I was about 11 weeks. I left it for the Saturday then had to go to out of hours on the Sunday because I felt so horrendous and they gave me antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon

GaaaaarlicBread · 30/01/2020 18:21

@glitter thank you I’ll try my best to get into the drs tomorrow even if it means having to leave work a bit earlier

If you haven't got the white spots it's most likely the viral type which you just have to sit out. I got the bacterial type recurrently for a period of years and it always came with a big spike in temperature so keep an eye on that.

Definitely call 111 if you're struggling and yep see the doctor before the weekend when it'll be harder to get some help. Hope you feel better soon, it's so rubbish having to put up with this stuff without the full force of medication (or a stiff drink)...

GaaaaarlicBread · 30/01/2020 18:36

@Notsure94 thank you , that’s made me feel a little better knowing I may not need antibiotics. It’s been a rough ride so far and finally the nausea settled today but been replaced with this ! I 100% need a stiff drink and a hot holiday away 🤣

Hang in there Grin . First trimester is such a rollercoaster. Second trimester is often so much easier. The nausea often lifts and you have got in the swing of it all so you can get properly excited and start a bit of nice planning x

As with any virus, nothing can be done. If your tonsils turn white, it’s bacterial and you need antibiotics but if not then it’s viral and nothing a doctor can do. I had bacterial tonsillitis constantly as a child until I was 16 and it developed into quinsy, horrible.

You have my sympathy, it’s excruciating. I admire you for soldiering on with paracetamol, it’s absolutely shit.

Notsure94 · 30/01/2020 19:12

I second that Urkiddingright the worst I had to manage was a streaming cold, totally blocked up and the pharmacist wouldnt give me Vicks Sinex which would have given me some decent sleep, just had a crappy saline spray that did naff all. It's really tough!

FernBritanica · 30/01/2020 19:16

I'd stay off work tomorrow and go to the first GP appointment they offer you. Presumably you feel pretty rough and there's no point tiring yourself out with work if you don't absolutely need to. Plus you won't be spreading it around the office.

GaaaaarlicBread · 30/01/2020 19:45

I have had time off with morning sickness recently and really don’t want another episode :( I literally feel like I’m dying it’s horrendous and I’m usually quite strong ! Feeling very defeated 😩

Had sudden vomiting , severe headache and some seizures so currently waiting for a callback off 111. Not a good morning . Just thought I’d update anyone who was following .

Oh crikey! I hope they call back soon! Good luck. Do you have someone with you?

Sounds like you'll be off now anyway but really your health is far more important than a few days off.. plus the morning sickness etc counts as "pregnancy related" so legally can't be held against you.

Hope you're feeling better soon Flowers

GaaaaarlicBread · 31/01/2020 08:09

@FernBritanica thanks so much . Ended up being blue lighted to the hospital , BP dropping below 70/30, high temp etc . Been here since 3, just waiting for dr to see me . X

Wow, sounds scary! You're in the best place now of course. Hope they figure out what's wrong with you and get you treated and home asap xx
