So in this situation, what do you do if are Chinese(for example) and were just in the UK on holiday? Stay in a hotel until they organise flights back? It's gonna cost you a fortune!

Use another airline Confused

I actually met some Chinese people who were in this exact situation yesterday. We were chatting and I believe they had decided to try and change their destination to Hong Kong and then get one of the (reduced) internal flights back to Beijing. They said they had spent a long time trying to get through on the phone but couldn't and they hadn't received any update via email.

See that's the thing, bluejava, must be bloody awful but you have to get home somehow! God knows how long they'll suspend flights for

I guess their travel insurance would cover it. Have they spoken to the embassy? Maybe special flights home could be organised? I guess ba are just trying to look after their staff which isn't a bad thing. Horrible situation to be in though.

Yes. They have and they will. With most countries advising people not to travel to China, the planes will be mostly empty. It doesn’t make business sense

If Air China are still coming into the UK then they probably have space from cancellations on the way back.

My husband used to work in China for 3 weeks at a time. There for 3 then back here for 5. He now works in a European city Mon-Fri but dozens of UK contractors still work over there. I hope they all manage to get home.
