We spend £400 on our weekly shop, granted we have a family of seven, shop at Ocado and try to stick to organic fruit/veg/meat but still it seems ridiculous!

How many people in your family, where do you shop and how much do you spend?!

To be honest though if I was feeding 7, my meal choices would be different. Eg. if I'm feeding just the two kids and me, I might make pad thai with prawns - for 7 I'd replace the prawns with tofu or edamame to keep the price the same. I'd definitely make a lot more dhal, stew, chilli, pasta bakes etc than I do at the moment.

poorbuthappy · 30/01/2020 14:52

Family of 5.
Between £60 - £80 Aldi
£20 Asda.
No alcohol in that. Everything else though.

Iooselipssinkships · 30/01/2020 14:53

Is this the new dick sizing competition? See who spends the most each week on shopping?

If you can afford it who cares. To some that's 3 months worth of shopping and others it's spare change. Context is key.

Willow2017 · 30/01/2020 14:58

Me and 2 ravenous teens £30- £50 p/w at Aldi, maybe £20 - £25 a week on top ups if required.
£400!!! Where the hell do you put all the food?

MatildaTheCat · 30/01/2020 15:00

If it seems ridiculous why not cut down? Shouldn’t be difficult with this absolutely ludicrous spend.

HazelBite · 30/01/2020 15:00

Until just recently we were a household of 6 adults and I was spending approx £150-60 a week this included food etc for 2 cats, cleaning products, and DH and one DS would take a packed lunch each out of that.
Online shop from ASDA extras from Wilko and Sainsburys

ShivD · 30/01/2020 15:00

Family of 6 here and never spend more than £120 a week on Ocado and £60 a fortnight on meat deliveries from Field and Flower. My boys are 11, 10, 7 and 4 and have very healthy appetites. We might do a weekend top up of £30-40.

ktjerl · 30/01/2020 15:00

Stealth brag?

ShivD · 30/01/2020 15:01

And meant to add, we don’t watch what we spend for that.

yoyoinSE3 · 30/01/2020 15:01

I spent £85 on our weekly shop in Sainsbury's earlier this week for three of us - me, DH and 4 year old DS. DS is at nursery 3 days out of 5 so he doesn't have meals with us on those days. I only bought 5 days' worth of food as not sure what we're doing at the weekend so will probably spend a good £30-40 topping up.

That's fine with us, we like nice food and don't really spend on much else. We get 1 takeaway a week too and usually eat out at least once.

yoyoinSE3 · 30/01/2020 15:01

We genuinely prefer to buy food than holidays. I hate going on holiday.

thaegumathteth · 30/01/2020 15:03

We spend about £150 a week - 2 adults, a teenager and a 9 year old. However that also includes cat food, dog food and cat litter. Also we could do it cheaper if I was more efficient at meal planning. Shop at Tesco though not Ocado....

WishThisWasLangClegGin · 30/01/2020 15:06

Family of 5 plus Au Pair. 90 to 120 a week depending what needs buying, ie toiletries cleaning stuff that we don't buy every week.

We eat very well, love Aldi and saved at least a third off Sainsburys. I do miss the convienient delivery to my door, but saving a couple of thousand a year makes up for it!

Do you buy lots of premium ready meals and snacks? lots of alcohol?

Are you throwing out wasted stuff just so you can have a choice what to eat?

BlooperReel · 30/01/2020 15:08

100-150 a week, the more expensive weeks are when we need washing powder, more toiletries etc. We usually do between 40 and 60 in Asda, and 50+ in Aldi.

BlooperReel · 30/01/2020 15:09

Oh, thats for a family of four and includes work lunches for DH and I.

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/01/2020 15:09

I shop twice per week and spend about £35 per visit to Aldi

Then I pick up 2 packets of the dried soya mince from H&B
£4

The dots mince lasts at least a couple of weeks

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/01/2020 15:10

Sorry soya mince lasts a couple of weeks so about £1 more per week

SmileyClare · 30/01/2020 15:14

Is this the new dick sizing competition? Bwah aha ha Grin brilliant.

BarbedBloom · 30/01/2020 15:18

We spend £50 a week for all meals and household bits for 2 adults and two cats. We have three or four meat free days and my dairy alternatives do push it up to be honest. I am starting to grow some of my own stuff too

Apirateslifeforme · 30/01/2020 15:18

Me, DD and DH we spend about £50 a week.
I cook most things from scratch and DD eats like a horse!

Apirateslifeforme · 30/01/2020 15:19

Admittedly it's a lot less since we stopped topping up at m&s a few months ago

GnomeDePlume · 30/01/2020 15:24

@coconuttelegraph exactly!

There will be a range of sums from £2.18 to £2180 covering as many scenarios as posters.

Ellatreetop · 30/01/2020 15:24

Wow, so many people here are looking for confrontation and want me to justify myself.

We have three teenagers all of whom have friends coming in and out most days, we also have two very young children and two dogs who eat high grade meat. I sometimes cook up to three different meals and there are usually leftovers which get frozen and eaten on a day that I can't be bothered to cook or for the babies when we're going out for the day. I also like to have a well stocked freezer.
I rarely buy alcohol but do buy nappies etc. My shop also includes cleaning products, bathroom products, washing liquids (we wash the babies things with different products, as we do the dogs things).

I guess the teenagers and their friends come in and like to snack, I buy a huge amount of fruit/nuts/cereal bars and bagels for this reason

Apart from shopping elsewhere or not buying organic I'm not sure what else I could do, I'm just not sure how everyone else seems to spend so much less!

Averaged out £50 a week - one adult, 3 kids (one a teenager, one with special diet). Shop in tesco, meal plan and minimal treats. This includes toilet rolls, toiletries, cleaning products etc.

damnthatanxiety · 30/01/2020 15:31

OP we are like you. Around £380 for a week. And there are only 4 of us regularly. 5 on occasion. I don't know what other people eat. I feel like we aren't crazy with what we get but we must be. I include laundry detergent etc. I wonder if other people just mean food when they state what they spend.
