We spend £400 on our weekly shop, granted we have a family of seven, shop at Ocado and try to stick to organic fruit/veg/meat but still it seems ridiculous!

How many people in your family, where do you shop and how much do you spend?!

£57 a day on food, every day , what on earth do you eat?

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 30/01/2020 13:42

That's far too much. I spend about £80 for a family of 4 with 2 teenagers.

diddl · 30/01/2020 13:42

Good for you, OP.

If you're buying what you want & not wasting food, surely what you pay is what you pay?

Or are you wanting to pay less?

You spend more on food than I earn! Grin

Fundays12 · 30/01/2020 13:47

Wow I have 2 adults, 3 kids and a cat abs average £70 to £80 a week. This includes formula, baby nappies and bedtime pull up pants for my toddler plus 5 days worth of packed lunches for ds and dh. That’s so much money.

I tend to meal plan, use as much as I can so as little wastage as possible. For example today the kids had a breakfast of waffles and fruit but often they have cereal and fresh orange.

Lunch was a brioche roll and left over macaroni for my 3 year old and left over macaroni for me, 7 year old had weetabix (he loves them and has additional needs so I provide them for the school), dh and our baby had homemade veg and lentil soup.

Dinner time - home made lasagna and garlic bread, leftover bolognese to make spag Bol, pasta bake, chicken dish, fajitas, steak pie and potatoes, fish and chips are some of the options. I look at what I need up use.

Snack time will be either crisps, fruit, digestive biscuit, yoghurt, custard or cheese twists or breadsticks.

I think you need to meal plan if you don’t already

averythinline · 30/01/2020 13:48

probably £150-200 a week here on 2 adult 1 rapidly growing teenager so I can see how you do that... we get organic veg box and either free range or organic meat the variable is the quantity of wine...

cook from scratch most things and rarely eat out/take away...

top up lidl as local but meat not free range mainly - so rarely get that from there...meat usually farmers market/waitrose

Blacksackunderthetreesfreeze · 30/01/2020 13:48

I’ve star going to Aldi . That helps.

screamingvalhalla · 30/01/2020 13:48

Your asking this question on here when most people shop at Aldi and feed at leat 11 people on £32.50 for 6 months , a stealth boast ?

bethg21 · 30/01/2020 13:50

between 40 and 55 a week , I have a family of 7 , 3 cats and Guinea pigs , that also includes the pets and nappies !

blackcat86 · 30/01/2020 13:50

£400pw is crazy. That's more than our monthly food shop for 2 adults and 1 toddler in nappies. Dh is also a big bloke and big eater. We usually spend £60-80pw on decent cook from scratch food but not organic. Have you considered a seasonal veg box from somewhere like riverford organics because surely that could replace a lot of your fresh ingredients and you could cook more seasonally based on what's avaliable.

picklerickkk · 30/01/2020 13:51

Approx £150 2 adults and a dog.

Lipperfromchipper · 30/01/2020 13:52

Family of 4. 65 per week from lidl, I buy mostly organic too and I make pretty much everything from scratch. I also meal plan. I think you need to meal plan OP,

Magnificentme · 30/01/2020 13:53

Family of 7 here and we spend 150 a week

weegiemum · 30/01/2020 13:56

We're two adults, a teenage boy with huge appetite and dd2 with a healthy one. Dd1 lives out but is home 1-2 a week for dinner, sometimes with boyfriend. Dd2s bf is here 2-3 times a week also.

We spend about £180 a week, including cleaning stuff, loo roll, toiletries (for the kids who live at home), and pet food (2 Guinea pigs, 2 rabbits, a cat and a dog).

We get a takeout on Saturdays, which bumps it up a lot. If we need to save more, it's the first thing that goes.

coconuttelegraph · 30/01/2020 13:56

Am I right to think this is a response to the many threads there have been recently where people compare shopping bills in some kind of how long is a piece of string survey?

Dragonembroidery · 30/01/2020 13:56

I spend £60 a week. Two adults, one child. Very healthy.

timeforawine · 30/01/2020 13:59

2 adults, 1 3.5yr old, 2 cats. Spend about £80 a week across Aldi/Lidl inc cleaning products/wine/beer.

latheritup · 30/01/2020 14:02

2 adults and a cat, around £40 to £70 a week. Soon to add a baby into the equation!

£400 seems a HUGE amount and I can't fathom what you'd be buying!

EmmiJay · 30/01/2020 14:02

Its £150 roughly for me and DD, however(!!), this includes my wine and cigarettes. Are you buying copious amounts of booze and fags because...how is it that high?!

LemonBreeland · 30/01/2020 14:02

I have 2 adults, 2 teens and one younger child and we usually don't spend more that £100 pw.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 30/01/2020 14:04

We are a family of three while DD is at uni. Me DH and 16 yo DS. I’ve just totted up my Ocado spend this month and it is at £570 including the delivery due on Friday. On top of that we spend around £5 each weekend at the local bakers. That £570 includes cleaning products etc. but not booze as we haven’t needed any beers and we get wine a few cases at a time. We grab a takeaway or eat out on average once a week as well.

TamingToddler · 30/01/2020 14:06

Screenshot your receipt, no advice really, just want want to see what you buy Grin

Spanglybangles · 30/01/2020 14:07

About £600 a month that includes main shop, top ups and a Costco run for meats, fish and general freezer fillers, toilet roll etc. That’s for a family of 4 and a dog.

canonlydoblue · 30/01/2020 14:08

We are a family of seven - we spend no more than £100 a week at Aldi or Lidl (big shop every ten days comes to around £90 then we add in tops ups of fresh stuff). My eldest is 8 so none of mine are huge eaters. I supposes if you are feeding seven adults it might be a lot more. £400 a week does sound ridiculous though......
