We spend £400 on our weekly shop, granted we have a family of seven, shop at Ocado and try to stick to organic fruit/veg/meat but still it seems ridiculous!

How many people in your family, where do you shop and how much do you spend?!

Lipper that's not a meal plan. That's just evening meals.

Breakfast?

Lunch?

Any other food?

Scbchl · 31/01/2020 23:18

We spend about 175, for two adults, a teenager and ten and seven year old. That includes toiletries, toilet/kitchen roll, cleaning products, washing powder, dog food and lunches for my husband - he takes a sandwich for his morning break and a cooked chicken breast and salad and rice for lunch. The kids lunch boxes (not the teenagers I have added her lunch money in to the cost). I suppose if there was two more teens and we were buying nappies and had loads of teenagers hanging around eating aimlessly and only ate organic and shopped at Ocado. Instead of Aldi and the butchers, I can understand how it is so high.

I could get my shop down to maybe 100 if we ate less meat from the butchers and I restricted their snack.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 31/01/2020 23:19

Tea?

Coffee?

Loo roll?

Sanitary protection?

Cleaning products?

That's just a list of five evening meals. Not a meal or life plan when it comes to shopping.

I love these threads. We’re a family of 3, with DS who is always hungry. I plan my meals and tend to batch cook but our food shopping still comes to approximately £80 per week. This includes lunches for me and for DP, DS eats school lunches. The only thing I think we could cut down on is the amount of fruit that DS and DP eat, that’s probably a quarter of the weekly budget.

My parents, on the other hand, spend at least 3 times as much. They buy everything local and organic (my mother is very environmentally conscious, to the extent that might be deemed ridiculous by some). Tbh, each to their own, if you can afford £400 per week and like organic, why not?

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:20

I meal plan and portion plan, my receipt is made up of a lot of fresh fruit and veggies so I know what my children are eating is just fine! I personally would find it hard to spend 100 on my weekly shopping! I would be throwing things in for the sake of it to be honest!! Anyway as I said, I don’t buy alcohol (except apple cider for one dish that I make) I don’t buy things until I am out of stock generally
I don’t buy crisps, chocolates biscuits or juices, we don’t need them so 🤷‍♀️

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:22

@ILikeyourHairyHands
LOOK at the first receipt as I have pointed out...there is loo roll, tea and coffee on that shopping receipt

JC yes the meal plan is only evening meals but I have stated upthread what we eat for breakfast and lunch...

Are you actually READING anything or just jumping to conclusions that I only feed my family once a day???

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:25

And I use a moon cup for the time of month and panty liners...of which one box would last 2/3 months.

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:26

Who buys cleaning products EVERY week!?? Hmm

Amanduh · 31/01/2020 23:27

We spend about £50 a week including extras and top ups and toiletries and nappies/wipes. Food is probably £40. 2 adults one toddler. That isnt scrimping and meal planning either.

FreakStar · 31/01/2020 23:31

Lipper- I'm getting the impression it's not really about the money for you- you come across as one of those people who likes to survive on as little as possible. Sounds like you only drink water, no treats, no biscuits or chocolate, no snacks, no juice , no alcohol, no bin bags, 1 tube of toothpaste for 2 months between (I am guessing) two adults. While am trying to cut down a bit on our excesses, and think the the OP is excessive and I couldn't afford to indulge as much as Hairy your lifestyle is clearly NOT what I'm aspiring to either.

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:41

We have treats just not all the time, they are not a part of my weekly food shopping. I give my dc pocket money and they can buy whatever they like. If I fancy a bar of chocolate (possibly once every few weeks) then I buy one at the shop! I don’t stop myself.
No I don’t drink alcohol, I don’t like the stuff so why would I.
I’m not wasteful- I hate waste!
Toothpaste should last more than a week for sure!!
Yes I only water or tea, my dc drink water or milk...but mainly water. There’s nothing wrong with that!! Confused

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:47

And I need you to aspire to be like me, I really don’t care, ppl can spend what they like on their shopping but I am saying that I would struggle to spend 100, just like others are saying they would struggle to spend less. But I am just showing ppl what I do buy... I am not exaggerating or being dishonest! This is how I live, we are a healthy, happy family of 4. We live a very good lifestyle I don’t need anyone to criticize it, I never once criticized @ILikeyourHairyHands receipts Hmm that’s their business, yet because I spend so little in comparison the mine gets picked apart. Like I said I don’t need EVERY household item EVERY week, it gets spread out. Simple as...🤷‍♀️

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:48

And I DONT need you to aspire that should say 🤣

FreakStar · 31/01/2020 23:51

My toothpaste only comes in 75ml tubes and between 3 of us lasts around 2-3 weeks (and we don't use advert sized amounts of toothpaste- more of a small dab each time). Most come in no more than 100ml tubes- I still can't get over you making that last around 9 weeks between 2 people- even with a pea sized amount!

Lipperfromchipper · 31/01/2020 23:59

I’ll put it to you this way @FreakStar I have no idea either but I will also add I have no idea when we last bought toothpaste and yet...this is what we have at the moment

To think it's too much?
copperoliver · 01/02/2020 00:00

I think you could cut back a little somewhere, as could I.
Family of 3. Plus 2 dogs. X

1Morewineplease · 01/02/2020 00:04

How much are you spending on organic , free range absinthe?
Are you bragging?
Sounds like you feed your children quails’ eggs?
You must know that your spending is a bit silly.

copperoliver · 01/02/2020 00:09

I forgot to add how much lol £180 per week. X

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 01/02/2020 00:17

There’s me and two teen ds’s (so basically three adult appetites) plus two indoor cats. I usually spend about £60-80 on an order delivered from Tesco, up to another £20 on top ups (things like bread, milk, fruit, etc) from Morrison’s or Lidl, and maybe the odd coffee and cake if I’m out. So around £100. That’s all my meals and snacks, all ds2’s except for the one weekend a fortnight he’s at his dad’s, and most of ds1’s apart from three days a week he buys lunch at college. Then cat food and litter, household and cleaning, and basic toiletries. I also usually add an item or two for the food bank collection, and I bake for the church once a month. I rarely buy alcohol, and we get a takeaway maybe once every month or two.

Willow2017 · 01/02/2020 01:40

I got 2 x 125ml tubes Colgate Total 2 weeks ago on special offer. Many toothpastes come in larger than 75ml. I usually use the Colgate sensitive one but total has that too so why not get a bargain that was cheaper tban 2 of my normal ones?

Home Bargains also do large branded toothpastes much cheaper than Boots etc.

ChristmasArmadillo · 01/02/2020 01:50

I budget 300 per week. I meal plan carefully and we eat every bite, no waste, and no junk “filler foods” either. Maybe people genuinely can do it on 50 but I don’t see how!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 01/02/2020 04:34

That's my fridge. Not mad. Just organised.

To think it's too much?
PrincessPain · 01/02/2020 06:47

2 adults, 2 children here.
We spend around £80 a week, a mix of asda delivery and Tesco for top up items.
That includes nappies for 2, cat food, all meals and snacks, toiletries and cleaning products.
No meat or dairy products, some sensible meal planning and a few treat meals.
Your monthly shopping costs more than our families income!

Igotthemheavyboobs · 01/02/2020 06:53

Family of 2 and an occasional lodger, £35 a week max on food. We shop in Lidl and Aldi plus morrisons for bags of frozen veg.

OhTheRoses · 01/02/2020 07:04

Including all toiletries, cleaning stuff, cat food and beers between £150 and £200 depending whether dd is at uni or not. So 3 or 4 adults.

Cereal/toast/eggs/yoghurt available for breakfast. DS and I make lunch for work. Cooked evening meal.

We eat well but not a doet of fillet steak and smoked salmon. I could reduce costs a bit but work full-time and am time poor.

Sainsburys shopper and my nectar summary put me in their top 10% spending wise.

I really appreciate being able to buy what I want and what we like. I do meal plan.
