to ask if YOUR 7 year old has a mobile phone?

Wellhellooothere · 30/01/2020 11:01

So a report out today reckons that HALF of 7 years olds have a mobile phone - nearly 50% of 5-10 year olds with phones, most by 7 years old.

IS that true?? I can't think of a single 7 year old with a mobile, and I work in a school... the age seems to be Year 6 going onto Year 7 where we are.

So tell me, am I wrong, does your 7 year old have their own proper mobile phone? I don't mean access to a tablet or one of those vtech toy things, I mean a real phone as this report says??

YABU - yes they have a phone
YANBU - no way, too young

A YABU or YANBU will do!

I can't vote but no. Mine have been given them at the end of year 6 going into year 7. I don't think I know any seven year old's with phones. I would say the youngest in my own circle is year 5.

Urkiddingright · 30/01/2020 11:05

No, mine aren’t having a phone until they start secondary school. They have iPads.

CrackersDontMatter · 30/01/2020 11:06

That rogue apostrophe is an auto correct but YANBU.

ploughingthrough · 30/01/2020 11:07

No way!! Not till end of year 6

JacquesHammer · 30/01/2020 11:08

Yes she did. Happy with the decision we made.

RasberryRoyale · 30/01/2020 11:08

I know a lot of 7 year olds that have mobiles. I don’t think it’s necessary but I’m not their parent.

BrokenLogs · 30/01/2020 11:09

No chance!

TinnedPearsForPudding · 30/01/2020 11:10

My 7yr old has an old phone which he plays games on. No SIM card so can't make calls. It's like a handheld console really. Some of his friends have the Nintendo DS, he has games on an old phone. No biggie really

Wellhellooothere · 30/01/2020 11:10

I'm beginning to wonder who these 2000 people surveyed were... I heard two older women talking about it on the bus this morning in that ' all modern children are ruined' kind of way and I actually said, 'excuse me but I've heard that report and I just don't think it's true'. They then asked if my kids still learned to read and write with pencil and paper or was it just all on iPads...

Nope, but I know at least two of the children in his school class do (mixed y3/4 so I guess age 7-9). He’ll get one when he starts secondary school.

Sleeveen · 30/01/2020 11:11

Mine doesn't but he claims loads of his friends do. I don't think this is true, mind you.

At his old village school, children tended to get their first phone for their birthday during year 6, as they would be about to start bussing independently to the city for secondary school, on a service notorious for breakdowns and lateness.

WheresMyChocolate · 30/01/2020 11:11

No, but he's permanently attached to mine, playing games and spamming his big sister.

cuckooken · 30/01/2020 11:13

Not a chance. 7 year olds have no need for a mobile phone.

This morning I was on Instagram and one of my suggested friends was one of my DD's classmates. They are 9/10. I was able to see all of her pictures as the account isn't even private. Pics of her posing like a teenager and comments about how it's 'after dance class' or 'outfit for granny's later' I was stunned.

Wellhellooothere · 30/01/2020 11:13

So YABU - yes they have their own working, connected mobile ( which is what the survey says)
YANBU - no they don't.

Sorry i can't vote

MumWhoIsNotHappy · 30/01/2020 11:17

Mine are 7&10 and don't have a mobile. We have just got rid of the landline and have set up Dh's old phone on the WiFi in DS's name so that they can call if we've left them home alone for 30 mins.
It isn't DS's phone though and he hasn't touched it beyond me showing them both how to call us and making sure they could. It has three contacts , me DH and MIL. We plan to get him a proper working phone when he goes to secondary.

shamelessfamilyoverroad · 30/01/2020 11:19

YANBU. Mine won't be getting a phone until at least the end of year 6 or when they start to walk home from school on their own.

Wellhellooothere · 30/01/2020 11:23

We should do out own MN poll, I bet we could get more than 2k people taking part...

OP posts:
KittenVsBox · 30/01/2020 11:25

Nope.
8 and 10 here, and no phone.
Thinking it's going to be an 11th birthday present later this year in preparation for secondary. I'd say quite a few got them for 10th presents, and more at the start of Y6.
Y5 and below (so under 10) it seems to be a rarity to have a phone round here.

YesIDoLoveCrisps · 30/01/2020 11:25

7 year olds don’t need phones! Or iPads!

TheBitterBoy · 30/01/2020 11:27

Mine got his for his 11th birthday which was in the Easter hols at in year 6. Lots of his friends got them about the same time.
Also, no he doesn't have it in his bedroom at night, but neither do we, they all go in a basket in the utility room. No phones after 8pm for any of us. He's never seen us with our phones by our bed so doesn't expect it for himself.

Butterfly02 · 30/01/2020 11:28

Mine get them for their 11th birthday so year 6.

Popcorninapot · 30/01/2020 11:29

Nope no phone for my 7 year old and I don't think any of his school friends have one (or I'm sure he would have told me!)
He is my eldest though so secondary age at the earliest for him, but am sure there will be pressure from his younger siblings if he has one and they don't. So maybe younger siblings get them earlier?

I think a lot of kids in his class have access to an iPad type device though. We don't have one for the kids and they very very rarely use it (as my5 year old is awful when I take it away). But they do sometimes now get online homework and I don't particularly want them using my iPad (and having access to emails, messages, lists etc) so at some point we might buy a shared kids iPad type thing.

cocomelon23 · 30/01/2020 11:30

My year 5 and most of his friends have one but didnt have them at age 7.
