I'm selling something on gumtree the ad only went out this morning.

About two hours later I received a text message saying "Do you still have the "item"?pls email me emailaddresshere"

This is what makes me think it's a scam

  • where I've put "item" the message said a very broad term for what I am selling and even at that not one I'd normally here it being called really
  • there was no number attached to the message only a name
  • the message was one way .. it could not be replied to.

I have not clicked the link to the email or attempted to email the address.

What's the verdict? Scammer or genuine buyer?

And if it is a scam what are they hoping to get?

Go with your gut. If it feels like a scam, then ignore!

Shahlalala · 29/01/2020 20:38

If it’s a link and not just an email address it could be something malicious.
You could try emailing not clicking the link.

What is the scam though? 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣

If it helps the name on the text message matches the name on the email address. But what private citizen uses one way text messaging? They're usually from companies or organisations. Like when ee tell you you're out of data

I’ve had a scammer where they ask me to email as they are on an oil rig. They say they will buy it but can they have someone transfer the money via some strange system. Money never comes but they wanted me to pay to receive the money or something. I can’t remember. It was very suspicious and they kept hounding me til I told them I’d gone to the police (of course I hadn’t).

You could always email and see what happens. But it is highly likely.

Sorry. That was ‘asked’ and ‘said’.

It was pretty clear with the first email that it was a convoluted scam.
