Looking to go away in summer half term....want to be able to swim in a warm sea!

Med is your best bet but you can be lucky/unlucky

GinDaddy · 29/01/2020 12:39

Crimea is lovely at that time of year.

Seriously... www.mumsnet.com/Talk/general_advice_tips

mencken · 29/01/2020 12:42

unlikely in the Med because, well, northern hemisphere and it has been winter and spring. Even shallow lagoons take until July to warm up.

hot/warm seas outside high northern summer mean a trip to the tropics, sorry.

Ask in travel

MyMessyHouse · 29/01/2020 12:45

The sea was warm when I went to Majorca one year in May. Think that was just luck though.

Smellbow · 29/01/2020 12:52

DH and I have swum in the sea in Croatia at the end of Easter and in October. It depends what you mean by warm, as I'd say we're pretty hardy.

TeacupDrama · 29/01/2020 12:54

the sea is at its warmest in Spetember and coldest in March it takes ages for sea temperature to rise it lags a couple of months behind land temperatures a sheltered shallow bay is best bet I would think Greek or Baleriac islands, southern Italy might be ok rather than French Spanish or Portuguese coast

Lonecatwithkitten · 29/01/2020 12:54

Cyprus has a sea temperature of 20 in May.

backinthebox · 29/01/2020 12:57

Nowhere. May is late spring in the Med and it is not a tropical sea. Plenty of places will be pleasant, and if you are happy to accept a cool sea you can have a nice break, but you’ll be looking a long time for warm sea at that time of year. I work occasionally in Israel, and the hotel we stay in doesn’t even open up its heated outdoor pool till April.

FlowerArranger · 29/01/2020 12:59

Portugal!

Probably too cold to swim, but we used to to the Argave at half term and we always had a great time. We loved going to markets, eating custard tarts, exploring the countryside, lounging on the beach, eating delicious fish for dinner at the harbour...

I'd give anything to experience those lovely days again.

Emcont · 29/01/2020 13:02

Majorca. The last 2 years we've been in May and the sea bas been lovely. Puerto Pollensa to be precise.

reluctantbrit · 29/01/2020 13:03

WE went to Majorca and had everything from 28 and able to swim in the sea and 17 degrees and rain. May is very unpredictable still.

Cyprus or Rhodes may be better ideas as they are further south.

Canary Islands otherwise

Canary Islands

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/01/2020 13:19

Nowhere will be that warm in May unless you go further afield to a tropical location. The Mediterranean can have lovely weather but the sea would be warmer in September.

Nowhere in Europe has warm seas in May (scuba diver so very interested in what the water temperature is going to be). I dived in the Med in May last year and it was about 18 C, even though it was 30 C air temperature.

Have a look at this:

Warmest in May in Europe is somewhere like Cyprus, but it's far from warm:

seatemperature.info/may/cyprus-sea-water-temperature.html

Nearest place close to warm would be the Red Sea, but still far from bathwater temperatures:

seatemperature.info/hurghada-water-temperature.html

I'd either go further afield or wait until August or even October.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/01/2020 13:32

For the person who mentioned the Canary Islands, the temperature doesn't vary that much there due to the Atlantic being a much bigger body of water. In winter the sea stays 'warmer' than the Med, but in late summer, it gets to about 23 C at the highest, so still not really 'warm'.

LisBethSalander07 · 29/01/2020 13:33

We spent to Spain in May and the sea was baltic, and the pool!

I think you need to go further than the Med.

yogo · 29/01/2020 13:36

No where is warm enough for me to swim in the sea in May in Europe. I love a warm sea, but need Egypt or the Caribbean in May.

Clymene · 29/01/2020 15:13

I was in Mallorca last May and the water was freezing! Even our pool was cold. So I think you'd be better off going further south (and can confirm that sea in the canaries is always cold!)

Teafortwohundred · 29/01/2020 15:29

Canaries sea is freezing in May.

I tend to go to hotels with a heated pool as I’m not a fan of cold water. I will paddle in the sea but not swim. I find it tolerable in August around the Med.

sanitygirl · 29/01/2020 15:40

The Med/Adriatic should be fine - I find it pleasant there at the end of May, but then I'm happy to swim in the English channel/North Sea in the summer. The outside temperature should be hot in any case, and you can go somewhere with a heated pool if you want properly warm water.

Branleuse · 29/01/2020 15:44

Id go to the canary islands if you definitely want a warm sea. I think its your best bet.

You can swim in the Med in May if youre hardy. Ive done it, but its not warm and depends on whether its been a warm winter or not.

Turkey ( more likely to be in Europe than we will be by Friday)
