To ask if this has been done correctly or should I complain?

We have had qwartz worktops and upstands fitted to our new kitchen today. However, I feel the joins are very noticeable. I wasn't expecting them to be completely invisible but was expecting them to be blended in some way. Is this right? Or should I complain? Hopefully pictures included

Quartz stone slabs? Joints are always visible, there's not really any way around it.

Smooth joints are for constructed "stone" surfaces, like Corian which is a resin+stone composite.

(Pics didn't make it to the website, btw)

SpoonBlender · 28/01/2020 14:51

Pics made it as soon as I pressed send, of course! Yes, that's about as good as it ever gets, they're usually chamfered like that else the edge is somewhat dangerous. Find yourself a little implement to scrape the gunge out.

JH12 · 28/01/2020 15:56

Oh really? I was expecting them to put some sort of coloured filler in and blend it in. Doesn't look finished and rather disappointed with the overall look

I quite like it

crustycrab · 28/01/2020 16:00

Yep, that's how it looks. You chosen quartz with a very plain finish so it's more noticeable that on some of the granite ones.

Nothing to complain about

FraglesRock · 28/01/2020 16:00

Think of them as a feature

FredaFrogspawn · 28/01/2020 16:02

Won’t Crumbs and stuff get caught in the gap?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/01/2020 16:03

The only way to avoid that is to pay a huge amount more to avoid joins in the splash back and to have a mitred corner joint.

Even in the poshest houses I go into I see them exactly like yours. It is normal. Honest!

sleepymummy2019 · 28/01/2020 16:03

I like it. You could buy some dark filler and fill it yourself but I don’t think it would look great, really.

ImAwfulWithUsernames · 28/01/2020 16:06

You'd think they would have warned you about this when you bought them, I would be put off too.

curlyLJ · 28/01/2020 16:18

I have quartz and my joins don't look as obvious as that. Mine do actually look like there is something filling the gap 🤷🏻‍♀️
I'll try and attach a pic- sorry lots of light reflecting might make it hard to see.

AlwaysCheddar · 28/01/2020 16:31

Mine have got a filler! They shouldn’t be leaving them like that!

eurochick · 28/01/2020 16:37

There should be some sort of filler to stop food getting caught in them.

JH12 · 28/01/2020 16:47

Now im really confused lol. They have put silicone or something in them. They have done a really good job on all other aspects such as cutting out the sink and the curved edges. They are actually even more obvious in real life than it looks on the photo. Spent a lot of money on them and really disappointed with the finish. I think they should have at least told us this before we got them if that is the case x

Maybe they didn't think they needed to explain that stone can't be "blended"?

Do you have a photo of what you thought you were getting or is it just in your head?

crustycrab · 28/01/2020 16:51

There is filler in. They're not just butted up.

Ken1976 · 28/01/2020 16:52

Now you've got me worried. We are in the process of having our kitchen installed and are due to have white quartz worktops fitted in about 10 days. We have been told that they will attempt to blend the joins in but they will still be seen. I hope they won't be too obvious

Mummymummums · 28/01/2020 17:04

This is mine - also quartz. Definitely got something silicone-like in the gap.

And with teaspoon added for size perspective

I'd be unhappy and complain

burnoutbabe · 28/01/2020 17:14

This is mine, the join is at an angle and I suppose being black, much less obvious.

It should have around a 1mm to allow for expansion/movement and should be filled with a colour matched resin, not just silicone

Are you sure though that they haven't left them to "settle" (they will be heavy) and aren't going to fill the gap another day?

Andonandonan · 28/01/2020 17:18

You do see the joins in quartz or granite - unlike in composite type stuff where they can blend it in so it’s completely invisible.

Here are mine - less obvious cos it’s white, but still there. Yours are quite noticeable, the colour match of filler doesn’t look brilliant.

Notacluedoyou · 28/01/2020 17:21

They look noticeable because the edge has been mitred! I have granite with joints but they aren’t mitred on the edges so aren’t v noticeable.

burnoutbabe · 28/01/2020 17:23

so weird, i can see the pics on this thread with the app (which i used to post) but not here! (same with the one's with the teaspoon!)
