To ask if this has been done correctly or should I complain?

We have had qwartz worktops and upstands fitted to our new kitchen today. However, I feel the joins are very noticeable. I wasn't expecting them to be completely invisible but was expecting them to be blended in some way. Is this right? Or should I complain? Hopefully pictures included

Perhaps they haven't finished. They put mine in situ but didn't seal it until the next day. Mine are green/grey and slightly less noticeable. I don't notice now. I think once you have your kitchen back it wont be a s obvious. I think the colour has something to do with it.You may find it looks better tomorrow. The guys that did mine took it right into the window. We always had the sill lower than the worktop before love it now and so much easier to clean.
Hope you like it better when they have finished. Mention it first thing.

cptartapp · 28/01/2020 19:17

Ours is Quartz too, similar colour. I wouldn't be happy with your join.

AngelicCurls · 28/01/2020 19:20

Ours doesn’t look obvious at all. I’d def say something

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/01/2020 19:20

Stuff will get trapped in the join. I wouldn’t be happy with that. Looks far to wide a gap.

LuluJakey1 · 28/01/2020 19:29

We don't have any on the runs of upstand- they are all on corners. Ours is a much paler, more marble like quartz than yours - we only have one on the work surfaces, there was a choice of lengths and we bought the longest lengths for the two longer runs, and the join hardly shows. I hadn't thought about it but didn't want any join at all and at first I was very aware of it. I never see it now.
I think the brown makes it more noticeable. I am surprised they have put a join in the middle of an upstand.

But, I bet you won't notice it in a week!

@ImAwfulWithUsernames not really, seeing as that's what showrooms are for

kattekitt · 28/01/2020 19:40

Others have had butt and scribe joints, yours is just a straight joint. They should have given you an option the butt & scribe would cost more as more labour intensive and more time to cut, but would look much better. Also the gap should be even and not wider at the front or back.

Hope you get it sorted op

Doggodogington · 28/01/2020 20:05

It should be filled with a colour matching epoxy and buffed. That is not a good join.

Justaboy · 28/01/2020 20:05

I think its the type of stone dependant, some you can invisible join others not so.

Search Youtube there a few vids on there..

Doggodogington · 28/01/2020 20:05

Or rather the join is ok but the finish is bad.

Milliways · 28/01/2020 20:23

Ours is a dark grey quartz and the join is very well hidden

This is ours- not noticeable at all by comparison.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 28/01/2020 20:30

OP a friend of mine has the exact same colour you have & her joins are barely noticeable.

I'd definitely speak to them about it tomorrow.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 28/01/2020 20:32

As mentioned above the edges look mitred or chamfered, they definitely shouldn't be. I think it's been done wrongly, sorry. Mine, and all the PP photos are correct.

Cantwaitforsummer2020 · 28/01/2020 20:47

I think they've perhaps not finished

JH12 · 28/01/2020 21:08

Thank you all for your replies. As far as I am aware he is only coming back tomorrow to do the window sill, so will definitely speak to him about it. The upstands we got are a shorter length than the worktops 1.4m so I'm a bit pissed off to learn that they come in longer lengths as we wouldn't have needed a join at all then

FrangipaniBlue · 28/01/2020 22:47

He's coming back tomorrow to do the window sill so will ask him. We got them from howdens but they sub contract the fitters.

This sounds like the joiner who fit the kitchen did the worktops? That doesn't sound right - my DH is a joiner and fits kitchens but will only fit laminate worktops. He won't touch stone because he's not trained and it's completely different to fitting laminate ones.

Your joiner may be trained, but I'd be skeptical given that he's used clear silicone (which you would on a laminate worktop) and not the resin grout specifically designed for stone.

JH12 · 28/01/2020 23:43

Frangipaniblue - no we had our own fitter do the kitchen and just got Howdens to fit the quartz, as like you say, we realised it would be a specialist job

agonyauntie2020 · 29/01/2020 00:11

Agree with all the other PP's particularly Inforthelonghaul
I think the finish is wrong, and I don't think it looks right. I'd complain to the fitter and if Howden's supplied him, complain to them if you don't get a better looking job (and equal gap, common sense that shouldn't be different), matching resin etc. Sorry.

Hgtvaddict · 29/01/2020 00:17

My quartz joins look like this. It’s not too noticeable as they used matching silicone, butted it up tightly, and skimmed the silicone so there no gap whatsoever. Mine is 5 years old and looks like the day they did it. I would suggest further skimming.

Yeahnah2020 · 29/01/2020 00:48

Yeah that’s not a good job. I’d definitely say something

MyDressHasPockets · 29/01/2020 08:14

He hasn't fitted the worktops correctly. I would be furious. I hope you haven't paid him yet.

KillingEvenings · 29/01/2020 08:25

This. The edges at the join should be flat so the two pieces butt up against each other without a gap

FreakStar · 29/01/2020 09:15

If he's coming back to do the windowsill then he's probably not finished yet and will fill the joins when he does the window.
