Why the use of DH,DD,DS,DC?

angell84 · 28/01/2020 01:17

Why are they used parrot fashion by every user on mumsnet?

It is ridiculous! Where is any independent thought? Every single post is littered with hundreds of DH's, DS's, DD's and DC's.

Who calls their husband, "dear husband"? It is pretentious for a start. But what really annoys me is why does everyone say the exact same "code" as each other on here. It seems like a teenage thing to do

OP posts:

The OP is doing a course on how to use the internets in the library, bless.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 28/01/2020 07:00

On babycenter if a DH is being stupid they use DuH instead.

Eckhart · 28/01/2020 07:01

Yeah, it's an outrage. I always find that Mumsnet is full of posters who are completely incapable of independent thought. That's why you never see any arguments or even debates on here. It's like we're all the same person, posting repeatedly under different user names.

Redlocks28 · 28/01/2020 07:04

And not everyone uses the 'code' either. Some people say "SO" which I bloody hate! It means Special One!

Special One?!

I have no idea where some people get their ‘facts’ from! How funny Grin.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 28/01/2020 07:07

With the "SO" thing, I thought PP were referring to the very annoying habit that has developed, whereby posts start with "SO... blah, blah, like, blah..."

ThatUserNamesTakenTryAnother · 28/01/2020 07:10

It's the ddog ones that get me, why!? Sounds pathetic really

NoSauce · 28/01/2020 07:12

I can’t work out whether you’re actually being serious there. I frigging hope not OP!

GrannyBags · 28/01/2020 07:24

I doubt there is an Internet forum or group out there that doesn’t use acronyms. It just makes things quicker. Im on a lot of Disney forums where they use them for the parks and rides and doll collecting forums where they are used to describe the different models or releases. Any every so often someone will pop up and complain. They are never a long term member and they never stay long. I don’t think it’s an issue really.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 28/01/2020 07:26

The 'dear' (although I thought it stood for 'darling') used to annoy me too.

But then I realised its just shorthand and quicker than typing 'my husband/son/daughter', and im willing to bet 99% of posters on her dont refer to their partners as 'darling' in person.

I cant get annoyed about it anymore.

FizzyIce · 28/01/2020 07:27

Oh fuck off op, seriously ..
It’s used on every single forum I’ve been on for years .
It’s not “parroting” is abbreviating .

Equanimitas · 28/01/2020 07:30

No. No, it isn't.

happycamper11 · 28/01/2020 07:32

Ddog is my favourite, i always imagine it's typed with affectionate humour not in full seriousness

MaxPanic · 28/01/2020 07:35

I get quite excited when I spot a code I havent seen before, I like trying to decipher it without looking it up.

"PFB" confuses me, I thought it was precious first born but it is sometimes used in a weird context ("Am I being a bit PFB?") which baffles me, although I think I get it.

It's probably because I don't have children.

LagunaBubbles · 28/01/2020 07:37

Who calls their husband, "dear husband"?

Well no-one obviously, haven't you heard of Internet shorthand? Confused

Villanomme · 28/01/2020 07:37

Threads like these make being off work sick so worth it 😂

Dworm has to be the greatest thing I've seen for ages.

damptowel · 28/01/2020 07:38

What does ODFOD mean?

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/01/2020 07:39

I agree, if you are using your phone it's actually easier, with predictive text, to write the whole word.

MaxPanic · 28/01/2020 07:39

ODFOD = Oh do fuck off dear.

finkploydthethird · 28/01/2020 07:39

Oh do fuck off dear (no, not you !)

NoSauce · 28/01/2020 07:39

If someone is posting about there MIL undoubtedly they will be writing MIL frequently throughout the thread. Why would anyone keep writing mother-in-law when they can write MIL? Or daughter when they can write DD or husband when they can write DH.

NoSauce · 28/01/2020 07:40

Their*

Likethebattle · 28/01/2020 07:40

@BillHadersNewWife that made me laugh. It means ‘significant other’.

I remember a wedding thread that got very confusing as the OP referred to DF, some people thought it meant father and other fiancé. It got really confusing x

MzHz · 28/01/2020 07:42

And there was me only yesterday looking up what Sealioning meant.

What impeccable timing.

My dad has been a radio ham since 1960. Back then they were referring to their wives as ‘XYLs’ and their offspring as ‘junior OPs’. Mildly annoying slang/acronyms are not unique to chat forums.

IvinghoeBeacon · 28/01/2020 07:45

“ if you are using your phone it's actually easier, with predictive text, to write the whole word”

Believe it or not, the internet has been around longer than smartphones, so acronyms developed before people were accessing forums on phones. I don’t actually use many of the acronyms (and never have - I’ve been on MN for well over 10 years, when most people were accessing on computers ) and don’t find it slows me down, but you’re being daft if you think people are going to stop using DH etc because of autocorrect
