I've managed to get ours down to £80 for two adults two kids. I need more inspiration! Help me get it lower.
We already yellow sticker but there always seem to be the same things reduced (Richmond sausages, carrot batons, doughnuts.) It's not always terribly healthy.
I get the £1.50 veg box from Lidl.
We eat meat free most nights.
Kids get free meals, I eat toast which is free at work and bring fruit, dp doesn't eat ( I think he does but doesn't tell me as I'll nag him to make sandwiches.)
Feeding others is pricey. Fed friend on Friday and in laws came over for dinner today so four extra adults.

No we don't, his bosses say that's like taking money out of his own wages Hmmwe get a free steak on his birthday and a turkey at Christmas and that's it.

@DramasticChanges

Actually, I found that my food bill went up significantly since going vegan. A few vegan meals a week will help you save but if you go fully vegan you have to eat lots in quantity and variety to make up for any missing nutrients. I’m afraid a very skimpy budget doesn’t suit veganism because you will end up with deficiencies.

DramasticChanges · 27/01/2020 18:46

@Noti23 good to know! I'm aiming for full vegan in five years when I'm qualified and have a bit more disposable income.

Spending money on nutritious healthy food for growing kids is important

Jojobees · 27/01/2020 19:24

I’m an NHS employee and I’m guessing if your 7s knew you were eating patient food you’d be disciplined and potentially fired. Toast is not free at work, you are stealing.

DramasticChanges · 27/01/2020 19:36

@Jojobees what are you on about? I bring the bread in. Geez!

OP posts:
HollyGoLoudly1 · 27/01/2020 19:40

To be fair that was your exact wording in your first post - 'toast is free at work'. I would assume from that it was provided by work and not that you were bringing a loaf in. It's not free then is it, your paying for it?

DramasticChanges · 27/01/2020 19:45

@HollyGoLoudly1 yes we have a communal kitchen and there's bread there, we all take it in turns to buy it, it's a pittance per month for the whole ward. I'm offended by the comment that I'm stealing. I love my ward. I've raised £250 for a new treadmill for my ward, I've donated my nespresso machine, slow cooker, Tupperware to my ward. I work god knows how many unpaid hours, I go shopping for Xmas presents for the patients in my own time, I buy them dvds and organise games nights and cinema trips. I do my bit.

So you rely on nicked bread and assume your husband doesn't eat lunch. Healthy and sustainable. 🤦‍♀️

NemophilistRebel · 27/01/2020 19:47

Maybe that’s why I wasn’t offered any toast after birth of DC1
Shock

DramasticChanges · 27/01/2020 19:51

Logging off now. You guys are mean. I have many faults. I'm a hot head and i speak before I think, I'm scatty and my hair is always a mess. I'm nothing like the person you're making me out to be.
Sleep well, try to be more positive. You'll have better orgasms. Thanks

Dragonembroidery · 27/01/2020 19:56

If you're both working as a nurse and a butcher then it's unforgivable that your spending so little on food.
Do you save 1000s? Prioritising foreign travel to see your dad over feeding your own kids is demented. I've lost older family members including parents, and know what grief is, but this is madness. Does he know you do this? Put your kids first. He choose to live abroad. Give up on daddy and focus on your OWN family.

NemophilistRebel · 27/01/2020 19:56

Sorry you feel that way.
It’s come across generally as a bit of a joke thread.
If I was giving serious advice it would be to consider some talking therapy to help you get over the saving money over anything attitude as it could potentially be dangerous to your children who need a fully balanced nutritious diet which can’t be achieved on £20 a week Flowers

IndecentFeminist · 27/01/2020 19:58

😂

RuffleCrow · 27/01/2020 20:00

"You'll have better orgasms" ah, and they hid it so well for 10 pages!

DramasticChanges · 27/01/2020 20:06

I'm serious, you're all supposedly about building women up and feminism but all I've ever had on this forum is hate and negativity. I came back to get advice about saving money and retraining as a social worker and the comments I've received 'work shy' 'thief' 'benefit scrounger' 'not a net contributor.' In just a very real woman who is juggling work, kids, a relationship in a country which is not that open to foreigners. Then I found MN and felt ten times worse about things. You ladies should take a second to rethink what you are typing.

OP posts:
NemophilistRebel · 27/01/2020 20:08

But it’s in response to what you tell MN

So for every person comes on here that says they spend £20 but want to spend less because they want to there’s 10 more in desperate need of saving money and has realistic expectations

NemophilistRebel · 27/01/2020 20:10

All you have to do is spend time reading the boards to see how helpful this place can be and then you might realise it’s not the people responding who are hateful and negetive but the people who just wont listen to honest advice

formerbabe · 27/01/2020 20:10

You'll have better orgasms.

Confused
NemophilistRebel · 27/01/2020 20:11

I’ve been there, the tough love can be hard

But bloody hell is it amazing, potentially life saving in some instances and worth its weight in gold.

So I think a many on here would take offence to being tarred with the brush of being hateful and negative

formerbabe · 27/01/2020 20:16

I don't think you're a thief or a scrounger op. I just think there's no way you can feed a family on less than £20 a week...and believe me I know about frugal living! I also think the UK is very open to foreigners...but that's a whole different debate!

NemophilistRebel · 27/01/2020 20:20

Even if a family of 3 only ate 14p loss leading bananas for each meal and snacks it would cost £14.70.

That’s before buying any real essentials

There’s something not right or possible without ended up suffering from malnutrition.

funnyoldonion · 27/01/2020 20:22

I was just going to come on and say I think you'll also like a chickpea and peach curry, I make that from a book called "a girl named Jack" I think you would like a lot from it actually, all really budget friendly. Good luck to you OP xxx

MondeoFan · 27/01/2020 20:22

I spend £36 week on food and think that's good

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/01/2020 20:32

When did this thread become about foreigners?!!!
