What's the least you've spent on food shopping for the week?

I've managed to get ours down to £80 for two adults two kids. I need more inspiration! Help me get it lower.
We already yellow sticker but there always seem to be the same things reduced (Richmond sausages, carrot batons, doughnuts.) It's not always terribly healthy.
I get the £1.50 veg box from Lidl.
We eat meat free most nights.
Kids get free meals, I eat toast which is free at work and bring fruit, dp doesn't eat ( I think he does but doesn't tell me as I'll nag him to make sandwiches.)
Feeding others is pricey. Fed friend on Friday and in laws came over for dinner today so four extra adults.

main shop each month is £60

How?? Genuinely how? Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks for 4 people for £15 a week? What am I missing with my food budgeting?!

Greydove28 · 26/01/2020 21:21

Wow!! I spend more than £80 a week let alone per month. Im worried your kids arent eating properly. Why on earth do you need it lower??

thrree · 26/01/2020 21:22

I assumed you meant £80 p/w which I didn't think was terrible. Have no idea how you do £80 p/m.

Halloweenbabyy · 26/01/2020 21:24

About £200 a month Blush if not more. Got two adults. Oops.

Greydove28 · 26/01/2020 21:25

Anything like sky, mobiles, hair done, broadband, car etc needs to go before you reduce that food bill lower. All children have a right to a roof over their head, keeping warm and food in their belly. This is your priority. Whats the reason for cutting your food bill so low?

Halloweenbabyy · 26/01/2020 21:25
  • for not got.
ActualHornist · 26/01/2020 21:26

I spend about £80 a week for five of us - two adults and three kids with packed lunches.

I try and do a week where we only eat leftovers and store cupboard stuff; that week is about a £40 week as we still need fresh stuff for lunches, milk etc.

Catapillarsruletheworld · 26/01/2020 21:26

£70-90 a week.

Two adult and two teens. How do you do it for that little? Do your kids have school dinners? I don’t see how else you could manage and still eat reasonably well.

bellsbuss · 26/01/2020 21:31

Not being rude but how the hell do you feed 4 people for £80 a month ??

Rosebel · 26/01/2020 21:32

What on earth do you buy? £80 a month, I didn't even think that was possible. We spend about £60 a week for two adults, two children and two cats. I have tried to get it lower but really can't.

AmazingGreats · 26/01/2020 21:48

Short of using the food bank? I've got nothing

Rubyupbeat · 27/01/2020 01:12

Sorry. But what is 'yellow sticker'?

feelingverylazytoday · 27/01/2020 01:23

About £20 a week for myself and my teenage daughter. It wasn't by choice though, and I had to go to the food bank a few times.
It lasted about three months, and we both lost weight, me especially due to not having enough to eat.

Mintjulia · 27/01/2020 01:49

£40 is our average for 1 adult, one 12yo. But I don’t drink alcohol, and that money doesn’t include school lunches.
I don’t buy brands, and cook from scratch. We manage a balance of meat, fish & lots of fruit & veg.

Mintjulia · 27/01/2020 01:52

That’s per week.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 27/01/2020 03:32

We are two adults and three teenagers, and I do a Big Shop on pay day of about £100 for the month. Then we buy bread, milk, and toilet paper (about £10 a week) and that's it. So £25 a week.
DD is vegan, and one DS is vegetarian. I have a slow cooker, and make stuff we can all eat, then add meat for DH, me and other DS. I shop at Farm Foods, and almost always have coupons for 10% off - they have bulk and multipurchase deals and do vegan protein deals too. We eat well, and even have a few "treats" - ice cream, pop etc once a month.

HollyGoLoudly1 · 27/01/2020 07:18

So £25 a week.

For 5 people! Again I'm begging you to explain how you are doing this?? £5 per person, less than £1 a day! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks... HOW??

This thread is eye opening. I'm off to scrutinise my online shopping order, thought I was reasonably frugal but apparently I'm way off the mark!

mrsm43s · 27/01/2020 07:42

I spend more than £25 per week for a family of 4 on fruit and veg alone. There's no way that anyone can provide a healthy, nutritionally balanced diet on that little. The recommended 10 fruit and veg per day per person, plus two portions per week of fish would cost more than that. In an emergency, doing it for a week or so, as a one off would be fine, but long term it's going to cause serious health issues.
If money is really so tight that you are finding this necessary, you need to seek help from a food bank, or another agency that can help you.

SophieSong · 27/01/2020 08:05

What’s your overall household budget like? Is £80 the limit of what you can afford a month?

ByeFeliciaa · 27/01/2020 08:06

£80 a month is already good! For a family of 5 and 1 cat, we can spend £70 on an actually shop and £5 here and there topping up the milk and fruit

londonrach · 27/01/2020 08:14

Ive managed on just a pint of milk and bread a few weeks but that when using storage cupboard freezer up and only random weeks never together. I used to get a weeks shop for £30 for two adults but struggle now as food prices gone up. Now usually £60-80 but this week was £120 as needed washing powder, cleaner, dish washer power etc. This happens every six months ish as buy when things on offer and run out so needed to stock up. Toilet duck was 87p in tesco so bought a few.

londonrach · 27/01/2020 08:15

Its two adults one child now

AllergicToAMop · 27/01/2020 08:16

Where are you all with under 30 a week shopping😱
Can someone post their shopping list? I too am curious if it's possible to provide actually nutritionally sound food on that budget.

@Rubyupbeat every supermarket puts things into sale when sell by date is coming to an end. Depending on time of the day you can get anywhere from 10% to 80% off. Main sale starts usually about 7pm. They use yellow stickers, hence the name

Oysterbabe · 27/01/2020 08:21

It won't help to get it under £80 but I find Aldi excellent for discounted meat. They always reduce to 50% on its sale by date and I buy loads and stick it in the freezer.
