Are you worried about Coronavirus?

I'll admit haven't really seen much of the news until now. I've seen a few tweets on Twitter saying that the entire city of Wuhan is now under quarantine.

Is anyone here worried about it? Or is it just a case of scaremongering? I feel a bit uneasy about it.

I curb my anxiety over these things by accepting that there is nothing I can do about it right now. I cannot stop it spreading or mutating or any of that. Instead I concentrate on what I can do which is to avoid sick people, wash my hands regularly, use a tissue when needed (catch it, kill it, bin it! Grin), and follow whatever advice is issued by PHE. I rationalise it all by focusing on the fact that as things currently stand if it did make it to the UK and if it started circulating in the general population (i.e., more than a few isolated cases) and if I did catch it then my chance of recovering it are much higher than my chances of dying from it.

vadam · 26/01/2020 00:18

@Hoik I do hope it doesn't make its way over here! I will definitely be hand washing and sanitising a lot more than usual from now just to be on the safe side

Actually, there are 12 cities in China now under quarantine, which involves approximately 35 million people. I'm still not worried.

Blitzen2 · 26/01/2020 00:20

Yes I am very concerned. Mostly because I have family in that region.

Hoik · 26/01/2020 00:20

If you think of the size of China and how many people have been reported as sick, even if China are understanding the figures (which they blatantly will be) it is still only a comparatively small percentage of their overall population.

TheHagOnTheHill · 26/01/2020 00:21

How can you only realise today, the news trickled through on November but the news has been saturated about it for a few weeks now.
Not worried yet but sooner or later we will get a pandemic.

vadam · 26/01/2020 00:22

@Blitzen2 I hope that they will be okay!

Generallybewildered · 26/01/2020 00:26

I’m worried about the fate of individuals and families in that area, especially those who are poor or ill.
I’m not at all worried about myself or my family in the UK. It’s media hysteria.

LifeAndSoulOfThe · 26/01/2020 00:27

I feel concerned for the elderly & vulnerable people. But I am a worrier in general

Blitzen2 · 26/01/2020 00:31

@vadam at the moment they are fine thankfully, but they work and have kids at school so pretty open to germs. I’m hopeful that it’s contained and dealt with very quickly. China have made a massive fuck up in hiding this originally.

vadam · 26/01/2020 00:33

The video of one of the victims having severe seizures was terrifying

OP posts:
Haggisfish · 26/01/2020 00:35

But you would feel that way if shown a video of a flu patient having a seizure or a measles patient too. Any virus can affect very small
Numbers of people very badly. I’m not concerned that this virus causes more of a risk than flu, no.

SunshineAngel · 26/01/2020 00:39

I wasn't concerned until I saw a stupid thing on Facebook (attached).

I honestly hadn't thought too much about it, but I literally received something from AliExpress this morning and opened it without a second thought .. and now I'm thinking you know what, they don't know enough about this virus to reassure me it couldn't have been in my package :').

TheClaws · 26/01/2020 00:47

SunshineAngel Are you concerned your Aliexpress package could give you the virus? I wouldn’t think so. The virus wouldn’t survive that amount of time. Plus, shipping in ultra cold temperatures would likely kill anything off. Any risk is very low. I’m not a biological expert though.

MustangsDraggedMeAway · 26/01/2020 01:04

If only people wouldn't eat dogs, bats and snakes. It seems like all the diseases these days comes from the disgusting habit of eating bushmeat and/or selling live animals, such as dogs, bats & monkeys in markets for eating.

I am a vegetarian btw.

housemdwaswrong · 26/01/2020 01:20

Worried no, concerned yes. Ordinarily about the effect this will have on already impossible to see GPs , and a Welsh a&e service under huge pressure. It won't take an outbreak to add pressure, just 1/2 cases, some media hype, and everyone with a cold will be turning up at GPs and a&e.

If we do get it here, I will take relevant safety precautions as I take immuno suppressants , so that causes some extra concern, but at the minute, not overly worried.

1forAll74 · 26/01/2020 01:23

I am not too worried about this new virus, as being an oldie in the UK, and don't travel at all, But so many people travel around the world these days, going abroad to far flung places, for holidays, and business reasons.

People are being checked out at airports now etc, but who knows who may have slipped through the net so to speak a few weeks ago, and may have had this virus.

I don't think that people in the UK here, should be getting paranoid about this though. We are in the winter season now,and lots of people get stricken down with flu etc, and may think that this is the new virus situation. But for once, try and trust any news items about everything thus.

fallfallfall · 26/01/2020 01:27

The flu for which an annual immunization helps prevent kills thousands of people worldwide a year. If you google the numbers they are staggering.

LovelyWeatherByTheSea · 26/01/2020 01:29

I'm slightly worried. I think the situation in Wuhan is probably dire, and unbearable. I'll worry if/when there are confirmed cases in London.

TheWoodsareDarkandDeep · 26/01/2020 01:36

The death rate once contracted doesn’t seem very high. Ebola was about 70%

Skyejuly · 29/01/2020 22:27

My friend is in Shanghai and the school is closed. His wife is in Taiwan.
