Not collecting parcel from China

I ordered some bits off amazon a few weeks ago. Just a hamster ball and slide for dd hamster.

I know they have come from China and are currently at the post office but dh at first stated I needed to wear gloves and then flash wipe all the contents before I get home. He has now decided I can't get them as he's worried about coronavirus.

I understand but I'm also very HmmI've waited for ages for the bits. Dd has waited and I thinks it's a bit overkill

Aibu to just go get them anyway and flash wipe it to placate him?

I don't want to spend more money buying something I've already brought.

Wash him in hot, soapy water, air dry and then place in the freezer for 24 hours?

RachelTension · 25/01/2020 14:50

Oh good grief.

SevenStones · 25/01/2020 14:51

My husband's just got back from a trip to China!! What shall I do with him?!

Boil wash in the washing machine then stick him in the freezer for 24 hours.

EverybodyLangClegTonight · 25/01/2020 14:52

My husband's just got back from a trip to China!! What shall I do with him?!

You have to flash wipe him head to toe Grin

(Didn’t know that about hamster balls! Don’t have a hamster thankfully!)

Put him in a hamster ball?

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 25/01/2020 14:55

Population of China :- 1.3 billion.
Number infected:- 1300

Roughly one in a million.

Nomorelaundry · 25/01/2020 14:55

If this was a problem the Chinese and UK Governments would be all over it before anything would've reached here.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 25/01/2020 14:56

This made me laugh. If the virus is that transmissible then we are all in the shits! We are constantly importing things from China. Did you know that Tescos currently stocks pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and garlic all grown in China. (I wish they wouldn’t but that’s another issue).

You sound hysterical!!

RaveOnThisCrazyFeeling · 25/01/2020 14:59

Newme there's always one what?

One person who disagrees with cruelty to animals? Those people are so annoying, aren't they?

Skyejuly · 25/01/2020 14:59

I have had post from China today. So much comes from there we simply can not avoid.

Foxesinsockses · 25/01/2020 15:01

Oh good heavens.

  1. China is a big place. 1200 confirmed cases out of a population of 1.4 BILLION gives you a 0.0008% chance (or 1:116,666) chance that your package was packed by an infected person.
  2. Known coronaviruses wouldn't survive that long and there's nothing to suggest this one is any more likely to.
  3. 100,000s of people die of influenza each year, which is also a virus and is present globally. Does he flash wipe everything he gets in the post?
  4. In the hugely unlikely event he contracted Wuhan coronavirus from a parcel, it's not likely to be serious unless he is otherwise vulnerable.

Tell him not to be so daft.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/01/2020 15:03

Doesn’t he think that the Post Office would have refused to take the packages and post from China if they thought there was a risk to their staff.

Foxesinsockses · 25/01/2020 15:03

Ah, I missed a zero. One in 1,166, 666 chance. Less than one in a million.

Hoppinggreen · 25/01/2020 15:04

Hamster Balls are awful

Equanimitas · 25/01/2020 15:06

As I understand it, this virus only transmits via close personal contact. There is no way you'd catch it off a parcel.

Is your DH going to go round covered in clingfilm in case he touches something that someone from China might have touched?

GreenTulips · 25/01/2020 15:10

Put him in a hamster ball?

And open the stair gate.

OrchidJewel · 25/01/2020 15:12

You think this is ridiculous my DH is currently online to Tesco ordering a shitload of tins and dried food in case of 'lockdown' I kid you not Shock

We are in Ireland......

mokapot · 25/01/2020 15:16

Stupidity at its highest. The virus won’t survive on fucking plastic for more than a nanosecond
Honestly I think you can safely say 99% of stuff in your house come from china

"If this was a problem the Chinese and UK Governments would be all over it before anything would've reached here."

You seriously think that this UK Government is efficient?

XingMing · 25/01/2020 15:21

DS asked me the same question earlier. But there's some grounds for caution, not least because the coronavirus situation appears to be several times worse than anyone is saying. There's some raw video from a hospital with medics in hazmat suits and several covered bodies in a corridor that's been removed from Weibo. Not certain how authentic it is, but quite worrying. The Internet also reckons that it started with material lost from a bio-weapons facility.

tempester28 · 25/01/2020 15:22

Pets at home?

RalphWiggumsWedgie · 25/01/2020 15:24

Well that's sealed it for me. It must be true.

RhodaCamel · 25/01/2020 15:24

I have terrible health anxiety so understand your dh as I am panicking a bit. The thing is that virtually everything (including a lot of food) comes from China whether it’s direct or through a U.K. source so it would be impossible to ‘decontaminate’ everything. Also, those bits you ordered would have taken weeks to come by ship so they are probably fine.

littlepaddypaws · 25/01/2020 15:24

on a serious note op, does dh normally worry about things like this ? it does seem ott otherwise.
orchid it's the john mccleann [bruce willis- die hard]coming out in him .Grin
hammie balls ? not brilliant but my two love theirs, i offer the ball to them and they get excited to go in, trundle around for 5 minutesor so under supervision then wheni try to take them back out they literally spread eagle rhemselves tothe outer edges so i can't pick them up. they come out when they are ready and not before Smile
sorry op, derailing thread.

mamma437 · 25/01/2020 15:25

Surgical masks are also made in China. Think about that next time you're at the hospital.
