Interesting article, but don't seem to be able to comment there.
For me, Cantu all the way - it's not just for afro hair.
The co wash is brilliant, along with the curl revitaliser "comeback curl", the curl activator cream... my bathroom is stuffed with their products.
Also, I generally buy in afro hair product stores - about 60% of the price on amazon or boots/superdrug.
And silk pillow cases are expensive, but they make ahuge difference.

@QuietlyPlotting I have the black orchid and love it. My hairdresser gave it to me

Fr0g · 25/01/2020 12:30

@sassy31 - my first was a cheap one from ebay or amazon - didn't last brilliantly, but I was using all the time.
I bought a couple online from Lilysilk about three months ago - they have a sale on at the moment. It is one of those sites where if you look, you get bombarded with their ads and discounts, so don't buy first time you look. Good quality, I bought zipped ones, which are great for the slippery fabric.
I had some beautiful John Lewis ones as a christmas present - seem great quality, haven't used them a lot yet.

I did try satin ones initially as they're cheaper - it was in the summer, but I found them sweat inducingly clammy - and a bit shiny/cheap looking.

Glad to see others on this thread using Jessicurl and Boucleme Smile I think they are amazing.

I was a bit Hmm about some of the items on the list but thought, OK, we are all different.

I'm currently obsessing about Only Curls.

Sassy31 · 25/01/2020 12:44

Thanks Fr0g 😊

What is this Denman brush that people are speaking of???????

I am a huge fan of the Aveda Be Curly cream

GrimDamnFanjo · 25/01/2020 13:24

I'm another air dryer but I really want to improve my curls - any rec's?

Toomuchgoingon · 25/01/2020 13:49

I never brush/dry my hair. If I do, I end up as a ball of frizz.

Wash, condition, Argan oil and then current curl cream of choice. Very quick in the morning although a bit cold in winter.

dairyfairies · 25/01/2020 14:10

Yarboo

Google 'denman d3' - there are different denmen out there and d3 is the best for curls. it's a styling brush which helps to distribute product and helps the curls to form nicely. difficult to explain. There is an art to use it. Lots of videos in YouTube. just have a look. They show pretty well what it does.

I've just seen Trepadora have a salon fairly local to me so have booked in for a haircut......it's very overdue. It will be interesting to see what they can do with my hair......

LoseLooseLucy · 25/01/2020 15:17

Cantu coconut cream is my favourite.

ohwerehalfwaythere · 25/01/2020 15:29

@BemidjiMinnesota I wrap my hair in a T-shirt to get excess water out and then gel. Putting it in soaking wet did nothing for me

I used to be a huge fan of Naked products before they were discontinued. The curl cream and mousse were just great. They have relaunched as Noughty, and I can recommend their (CG) shampoo and conditioners, as well as the leave-in and hair mask. The curl cream is good for an affordable CG option, but they haven't brought out a mousse yet - I really hope they do, for a little more longevity to my curls. The Naked mousse and cream combo just worked so well! I always wait until Noughty is on 3 for 2 and stock up.

I had a truly excellent haircut at Unruly Curls in London last year, and the stylist used a cream called Catwalk by Tigi Curls Rock Amplifier. It isn't CG friendly but I get great results with it, combined with the Noughty shampoo and conditioner. I've been using it for months now. You can also pick it up from B&M if there's one near you. It also does a lovely job of defining DS(2)'s little curls - I use a tiny pea of product on him. It's £7-8 and a bottle goes quite far.

I've tried both Boucleme and Trepadora and I have to say I was disappointed. The result was not as good as Naked/Noughty/Tigi and I had to use so much product for it to have any effect. They did smell gorgeous though! I have long hair and expensive products just aren't sustainable for me.

Itsallgonewoowoo · 25/01/2020 15:55

Auntie Jackie's curl custard.

Fr0g · 25/01/2020 17:08

I MUST stop reading this - at least until I've tried out the products that are arriving next week!

Finding hairdressers that are good with curly hair can be a pain! - interesting to see curly salons starting up.
The cuts I've had over the years where the hairdresser soaks it, hair hangs wet and long, then as they cut, they stare in amazement as the curl kicks in and it all gets several inches shorter!
Current hairdresser is great - he cuts it semi dry, just spraying with water as he works, so has more idea how it's going to look.

bemidji - I scrunch the gel into almost dripping wet hair and usually let it air dry (unless it's at risk of freezing solid outside!). If it goes a bit crispy when dry I just gently scrunch out the crispiness

Fr0g · 26/01/2020 19:05

the garnier banana stuff if great.
I purchased a tub yesterday, put it on dry hair - heavy and yuk, rinsed it out this morning and put a tiny amount in when wet, then left it. Hair was very light, curly and unfrizzy - got caught in the rain a few times and now its sprung into really nice tight curls.

Shea moisture hairs masks are amazing, I lather in then cover with a plastic bag and towel for an hour or so.

Sexnotgender · 26/01/2020 20:12

Boucleme, Cantu and Shea Moisture here.

I’ve 3B/C thick coarse hair.

ComeOnGordon · 26/01/2020 20:17

@Fr0g I hear you about the trouble in finding a good hairdresser. I’m not in the UK and have taken to chopping it myself. Cutting it dry seems to be an alien concept here.
I’ve had it cut by Matt James in Birmingham and was impressed. Also went to Belle & Blackley in Glasgow - wasn’t quite so impressed. The guy talks a good game but in the end the cut was a bit crap. Would love Vicki at McCrory hair in Manchester to do mine

raisinseverywhere · 26/01/2020 20:21

Boucleme gives me a sore scalp. I like Umberto Giavinni Curl Jelly, Boots Curl Creme, Shea Moisture superfruit complex, Cantu define and shine custard.

Drabarni · 26/01/2020 20:23

I'm just getting to the end of my Cantu products.
They were ok for a while along with curly girl method. I had mine cut by a CH specialist taught by the originator, what's her name?
Didn't work for me.
Back to my parabens and lighter products and hair has improved dramatically.

nachthexe · 26/01/2020 20:24

I was a bit weirded out at the amount of non-CG stuff in that article. I don’t remember seeing a survey, was it in CG threads?
Anyhoo. I use a mixture of devacurl and Shea moisture. Alternating every week or so seems to work.

Ohyesiam · 26/01/2020 20:59

I’ve always loved my curls, even through 10 years of everyone having Jennifer Anniston ramrod straight hairGrin.
Does anyone else find that their hair loves a product for several months, then stops responding well to it? Could it be due to build up?

I’m white with Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern / Celtic genes, thick curls, a 3b/c I seem to remember. I’ve always used products for black hair, the oil free ones.
I’m currently co washing with anything from health food shop, then cantu custard on sopping wet hair.
Days 2 to 5 , I steam my hair,( over a kettle, my family call it “ boiling the fleas”) and use a blob of cantu activator on wet hands.
I was pleased to find cantu after trepadora and other expensive products , but my hair is just beginning to go off itAngry.

ComeOnGordon · 26/01/2020 21:02

@Drabarni do you mean Lorraine Massey?
